AUTHOR TALK The Hardest, Longest Race: Henry Ford and the Cross-Country Contest That Changed America
An author talk explores the story behind The Hardest, Longest Race: Henry Ford and the Cross-Country Contest That Changed America. In 1909, with hundreds of car makers jostling for attention, M. Robert Guggenheim proposed a daring run from New York to the world’s fair in Seattle. Only a few entrants lined up, including Acme, Ford, Shawmut, and the imported Itala. The experts favored the pricier machines, while the modest Model T and the fire-struck Shawmut were seen as unlikely contenders. Henry Ford set out to prove that an everyday car could endure the journey and top the luxury field. A Ford reached the finish first after just over three weeks, ahead of Shawmut, but that apparent win was not legitimate. The talk traces how this turbulent contest and its disputed outcome shaped public views of automobiles and the future of American motoring. This program takes place at Dearborn Public Library (Henry Ford Centennial) in the Auditorium and is also offered online through Zoom. Registration is available through the library’s events calendar, and a Zoom link will be sent to those who register.
