Book Discussion - The Frozen River

A discussion centered on The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. Set in Maine in 1789, the book follows midwife and healer Martha Ballard after a man is discovered sealed in the ice of the Kennebec River. Called to examine the body, she reaches a conclusion a local physician disputes, pushing her to pursue a murder inquiry on her own. Her work grants a window into the private lives of Hallowell, and she keeps a careful diary that chronicles births, deaths, crimes, and everyday turmoil. Across one hard winter, as a trial approaches and gossip hardens into bias, her search for answers puts those she loves at risk and forces difficult choices about loyalty. The novel highlights an often overlooked woman’s resolve to secure justice in a time when women were expected to remain unheard, balancing tension with tenderness throughout.

FOOTLOOSE the Musical - Kindleberger Summer Festival of the Performing Arts

Footloose the Musical brings its high-energy story to The Stage at Kindleberger Park as the Family Musical for the Kindleberger Summer Festival of the Performing Arts. After Ren McCormack and his mother leave Chicago for a small farming town, he runs into strict local rules, including a ban on dancing imposed by the town’s preacher. Ren’s arrival catches the eye of the reverend’s daughter, stirring trouble with her tough boyfriend and fueling gossip that makes his fresh start even harder. At its core, the tale contrasts a father mourning the son he lost with a young man missing the father who walked away. Set to a Top 40 score that earned Oscar and Tony nominations and enriched with new songs, the production champions listening to young people while guiding them with care. The show is directed by Kris Allemang Stahl, a festival veteran at The Stage as an actor and choreographer, in her first season as Family Musical Director. The cast features Felix Bahrou as Ren McCormack, Farah Ghazal as Ariel Moore, Sanaa Olivacce-Shabazz as Rusty, Annamarie Hickman as Wendy Jo, Alyssandra Radford as Urleen, Griffin Jacobs as Willard Hewitt, Curtis Chapman II as Chuck Cranston, Joby Hertel as Reverend Shaw Moore, Taryn Fooy as Vi Moore, and Delaney McKenzie as Ethel McCormack, supported by a company of teen and adult performers. This outdoor production offers multiple free performances at The Stage in Kindleberger Park. Audience members can relax on the lawn, bring a chair or blanket, and enjoy a picnic, with additional options available from non profit food organizations and food trucks on site. There is no alternate indoor location if it rains, and weather updates will be shared on social media and the website as conditions develop.

VMBGC Semi-annual Board Game Swap Meet

Clear some shelf space and turn your gently used board games into store credit at the semi-annual swap meet at Voss Media Board Game Cafe. Bring titles you are ready to part with, label each box with your first and last name and a price, and complete the consignment sheet at the front counter. Drop-offs are accepted during normal store hours leading up to the event, and consignments can also be added while the swap is in progress. All purchases go through the cafe, and sellers receive the sale amount as in-store credit or on a gift card that can be used on anything in the shop. If you leave a phone number at the counter, staff can help connect you for direct trades at no fee. Prices are set by the seller, and staff will only negotiate within limits you have approved in advance. Trading and swapping between participants is welcome when both parties are present and agree to the deal. Please bring and buy only complete games, and check contents before purchasing, since the cafe does not verify components and is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen, damaged, or incomplete. Unsold games must be collected by the posted deadline, otherwise they will be added to the store’s game library. Table space is limited for general play during the swap since some tables are reserved for sale items. The main play area remains open for regular business, and the store’s library is available for play only and is not for sale. Participation is free, and you do not need to stay for the duration. Properly labeled items can be dropped off and credited to your account even if you step away.

FOOTLOOSE the Musical - Kindleberger Summer Festival of the Performing Arts

Sylvotherapy With Horses A 3 Part Series

Experience sylvotherapy, also known as forest bathing, a calm and research-informed practice that supports whole-body wellbeing by tuning in to the natural pace of the woods. With gentle, guided attention to the senses among trees, the nervous system has the chance to slow, soften, and return to balance. Forest air carries phytoncides, the aromatic molecules trees release for their own protection, and these scents have been linked to reduced cortisol, steadier immune function, and less inflammation driven by stress. For those navigating chronic stress, digestive challenges, or heightened sensitivity, this kind of regulation can be deeply soothing. The approach does not push change. It creates conditions where healing can feel safe and within reach, inviting a slower rhythm and a renewed connection with the living landscape.

Participants step into the roles of investigators, piecing together unfolding plots as they work toward a finale unique to each story. Open Space - A Sound Journey With Horses- A collaboration with Peregrine Sound Therapy

In collaboration with Peregrine Sound Therapy, this outdoor meditation welcomes openness to how nature and horses interact with sound bowls, gongs, bells, and other instruments beneath the Butternut Trees. It offers a gentle space to release tension, lingering thoughts, responsibility, and noise, and to soften through a soothing sound journey while horses move freely around a seated circle. Many people find the presence of horses calming and grounding, and their natural attunement can help regulate the human nervous system. The horses decide how to engage. They may come close or keep their distance, and they may touch participants as part of moving stagnant or negative energy. The exchange is described as mutual, supporting healing for both horses and humans as energy flows in both directions. Those who prefer not to be inside the paddock can sit just outside it. The vibrations of the instruments and the presence of the horses can still be felt, creating an experience to carry into the world and share with others.

Pedro the Lion with Advance Base at Glow Hall

Pedro The Lion appears at Glow Hall with Advance Base for an evening anchored in three decades of songwriting from David Bazan. Over that time he has traced belief, doubt, guilt, memory, failure, and the moments when the structure of a life starts to unravel. From early landmarks like It’s Hard to Find a Friend and Control to the later autobiographical albums Phoenix, Havasu, and Santa Cruz, the project has stayed clear-eyed and quietly powerful. The songs can seem straightforward at first, then reveal deeper layers, touching on faith, family, work, disappointment, and the stubborn grace of trying to remain human in everyday life. The anniversary shows do more than revisit the past, carrying forward a body of work that still feels active, searching, and alive. Advance Base opens the night. Owen Ashworth returns to Glow Hall with music built on intimate keyboards, small details, dry humor, and heavy feeling, connecting back to his Casiotone for the Painfully Alone years.

Book Discussion - The Peculiar Gift of July

A book discussion centered on a story set in Ebey’s End, a small town on an island along the Pacific that is accessed solely by ferry, provided fortune cooperates and it is not a Tuesday. Anita Odom, who runs the local grocery, finds her routine upended when 14-year-old July, the newly orphaned child of a cousin she barely knows, arrives at her door. Certain she is unprepared for guardianship and expecting it to end badly, Anita witnesses July’s uncanny knack for sensing what each Island Grocery shopper truly needs. Small acts begin to ripple through the community, reshaping lives in surprising ways. As changes spread, long-buried truths come to light and new questions follow, encouraging the people of Ebey’s End to open their hearts a bit wider. The discussion can explore the characters, the island setting, and how quiet kindness can spark transformation.
