Sunday Fundays - Captain Sonar

Learn and play Captain Sonar in a welcoming session designed for both experienced gamers and first-timers. Teams command advanced submarines and work together to locate and sink the opposition before they can retaliate. Each teammate takes a distinct station, including Captain, Chief Mate, Radio Operator, and Engineer. The Captain handles movement and shares key information, the Radio Operator listens for the opposing captain’s orders to pinpoint their position, and the Engineer readies torpedoes, mines, and other tools for combat. Teams sit together and divide responsibilities, with the distribution of roles adjusting based on the number of players. The game can be played in a traditional turn sequence or with everyone acting at once, all while tracking the enemy’s actions. When a captain launches an attack, play pauses briefly to check for a hit, then the chase resumes. Multiple maps are included to offer different levels of challenge. This event requires a 1-Day Membership, with credit applied back for a qualifying purchase, and members are free for this event.

Join us for People, Places, and Birds!

At People’s Church, this program spotlights Daniel Bernard and a year devoted to birding across the United States. He set out to visit every state in the lower 48 with the goal of observing 100 bird species in each one, meeting local birders along the way and exploring both celebrated hotspots and lesser known places. The journey meant living out of the back of his Subaru Crosstrek and overcoming setbacks, yet it took him farther south, east, north, and west than ever before, connected him with more than 300 birders, and resulted in a tally of 607 species. He reached his target and may be the first to achieve 100 species in every lower 48 state within a single year. Bernard grew up with a naturalist father and a love of biology, though birding did not immediately stick. After a visit to the Biggest Week in American Birding at Magee Marsh with his dad, he embraced the pastime with enthusiasm and later completed a Michigan Big Year that recorded 337 species. All ages are welcome, including families and nature lovers. Light refreshments and time to socialize are planned, with snacks and beverages provided, and bringing a reusable coffee cup is encouraged. Accessible parking and entrances are available at the front and rear of the building. A simultaneous Zoom option is planned for those who prefer to participate remotely, with access details to be shared in the newsletter emailed to members and on the event calendar. A recording will be available for later viewing.

Book Discussion - The Correspondent

This discussion centers on The Correspondent, a novel that follows Sybil Van Antwerp, who has long relied on writing letters to understand her world and her place in it. On many mornings around midmorning, she settles in to compose notes to her brother, her closest friend, the university president who refuses her request to audit a course she longs to take, and to authors Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry with her thoughts on their newest books. She also writes again and again to someone whose letter she never mails. Sybil expects life to continue as it has. She is a mother and grandmother, a wife and a divorcee, and a respected lawyer. When messages from someone tied to her past compel her to revisit a painful chapter, she recognizes that the long-held, unsent letter must finally be read, and that moving forward requires an act of forgiveness. The novel explores the comfort found in literature and the connections forged with people we may never meet in person. It reflects on the confidence of youth and the perspective that comes with age, and traces the mistakes and kindnesses that shape a lifetime.

Workshop Wednesdays: Finspan & Unmatched Adventures - Tales to Amaze!

Learn and play two games in an instructional session. In Finspan, you take on the role of a marine researcher exploring the vivid Sunlight Zone, the eerie Twilight Zone, and the dark Midnight Zone. Discoveries made over four weeks provide benefits as you dive deeper. Different dive sites emphasize growing your collection, finding freshly laid eggs, hatching them into young, and combining young into schools. The player with the highest total from fish, eggs, young, schools, and achievements wins. Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze brings a cooperative way to experience Unmatched with themes drawn from mid-20th century pulp adventures, tall tales, and local legends. Players work together to defeat one of two villains, Mothman or the Martian Invader, each with its own battlefield and objective. Villains can be supported by minions such as the Jersey Devil, Ant Queen, Loveland Frog, The Blob, Tarantula, and Skunk Ape, which are controlled by special action cards and a simple targeting system. The set includes four heroes: Nikola Tesla channels electrified coils to power effects, Annie Christmas grows stronger when fighting from behind, The Golden Bat wields a range of potent abilities, and Dr. Jill Trent, Science Sleuth, uses an array of gizmos. Dive into tabletop adventure with volunteer-led Dungeons & Dragons games suited to a range of experience levels. One table welcomes participants of any background. Another, Lilah’s Game, seats up to six and is built for 4th-level characters. It leans toward experienced players, though anyone may participate. That story begins in a small village in the year 480 where a sudden blaze and a hooded onlooker set events in motion, leading to captivity in a dungeon... the objective is to break free and seek justice for the village. Homebrew characters are welcome each week, and premade sheets are available for those who want to jump in without preparation. Kaye’s Galencia also hosts up to six players and emphasizes rich roleplay and exploration. Characters begin at 3rd level using the 2024 5.5e rules. New players can take part, but the game is designed with veteran adventurers in mind. Homebrew options are allowed with the DM’s approval. The campaign spans the world of Galencia, uncovering its origins, the gods who tried to hide the truth, and a figure known as the Fool. The path may reveal the reality behind the world or draw players into the very deceptions and dangers that have claimed many before.

IAN MAKSIN in KALAMAZOO MI: Songs of Love & Peace

At First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo, cellist, composer, and multilingual vocalist Ian Maksin shares a program of songs of love and peace, inviting listeners on a multilingual voyage that seeks restoration and strength through music. Using a loop pedal and electronics, he layers his cello into a rich, orchestral sound that supports his vibrant voice as he interweaves traditional melodies from many cultures with original instrumental pieces. The performance draws from his latest release, shaped by years of travel across continents as a touring artist, as well as experiences mountaineering, flying, practicing meditation, and collaborating with local musicians. It is crafted to create a space of presence, clarity, and emotional renewal. In addition to new material, the evening features selections from earlier albums The Alchemist and Amor Renatus, along with pieces from a wide-ranging repertoire of more than 300 songs performed in 43 languages. Born in the former USSR and trained from early childhood, he continued studies in New York, spent several years with the New World Symphony in Miami, and developed a signature style that blends classical roots with rock, blues, jazz, and global traditions, using the cello as a unifying voice devoted to connection and peace. General admission is $30 for a limited allotment, then $40 once that quota is reached and at the door.

Excavating Fort St. Joseph

Discover the history and archaeology of Fort St. Joseph, a mission founded by French Jesuits in the 1680s and among the earliest European footholds in the western Great Lakes. By the 1700s it served as a vital link within a network of frontier communities at the far reaches of New France. For nearly eight decades, French priests, soldiers, and traders lived there in close contact with Native communities, especially the Potawatomi and Miami. Archaeological work at the site has uncovered thousands of artifacts tied to religious practice, military life, and daily domestic activities, offering insight into the people who once called this outpost home. Excavations and collections research are carried out by the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project, a partnership between Western Michigan University and the City of Niles. Erika Hartley, the project’s director, will discuss the ongoing investigations and share a presentation that highlights the dig.

Book Discussion - The Frozen River

A discussion centered on The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. Set in Maine in 1789, the book follows midwife and healer Martha Ballard after a man is discovered sealed in the ice of the Kennebec River. Called to examine the body, she reaches a conclusion a local physician disputes, pushing her to pursue a murder inquiry on her own. Her work grants a window into the private lives of Hallowell, and she keeps a careful diary that chronicles births, deaths, crimes, and everyday turmoil. Across one hard winter, as a trial approaches and gossip hardens into bias, her search for answers puts those she loves at risk and forces difficult choices about loyalty. The novel highlights an often overlooked woman’s resolve to secure justice in a time when women were expected to remain unheard, balancing tension with tenderness throughout.

Sylvotherapy With Horses A 3 Part Series

Experience sylvotherapy, also known as forest bathing, a calm and research-informed practice that supports whole-body wellbeing by tuning in to the natural pace of the woods. With gentle, guided attention to the senses among trees, the nervous system has the chance to slow, soften, and return to balance. Forest air carries phytoncides, the aromatic molecules trees release for their own protection, and these scents have been linked to reduced cortisol, steadier immune function, and less inflammation driven by stress. For those navigating chronic stress, digestive challenges, or heightened sensitivity, this kind of regulation can be deeply soothing. The approach does not push change. It creates conditions where healing can feel safe and within reach, inviting a slower rhythm and a renewed connection with the living landscape.
