Long Memory Project: Farmland Opening Reception

Celebrate the Farmland exhibit at The Alluvion with an opening reception that brings together the artists and the elders whose farming stories inspired the work on view. The evening features a discussion panel with both groups, time to explore the exhibition, light refreshments, and a cash bar. Admission is free, and advance registration is required. The Long Memory Project is a pop-up artist residency that uplifts community narratives, especially everyday acts of courage, stewardship, and connection that shape who we are and where we are headed. This third installment is produced in collaboration with MSU’s Broad Art Museum. Elders connected to the state’s agricultural history partnered with ceramist Debbie Carlos, painter Lilian Martinez, poet Alex Rivera-Sastre, and mixed-media artist Mike (Michaela) Nichelle. Their collaboration began with a visit to the Farmland exhibition in East Lansing, continued at the Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference, and included a day of guided conversation about farming in Michigan. Reflections ranged from warm memories and laughter to meaningful discussions about equity, leaving participants feeling heard and united. The artworks created in response to these stories come together in this exhibit.

OTP presents The Drowsy Chaperone

On the MainStage, a musical comedy unfolds as a devoted theater fan known as the Man in Chair puts on a cherished cast album, and a 1920s musical comes to life in his apartment. The meta-story tracks a wedding that careens off course, featuring gangsters, identity mix-ups, and an irrepressibly inebriated chaperone. With warmth and wit, it both playfully pokes fun at and celebrates the traditions of classic musicals. Music and lyrics are by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the book is by Bob Martin and Bob McKellar, and the production is directed by Hayley Bowker and Jacob Pointon.

Tuesday Trivia Night at Rare Bird Brewpub

A weekly trivia night at Rare Bird Brewpub offers prizes every game and attendance perks across two seasons. Teams typically include 1 to 6 players, and larger groups may still take part, but only up to six count toward season rewards. Each game features four written or visual rounds with 15 questions each plus a 15 question music round. Teams complete a worksheet together at their table, then swap papers with nearby teams for scoring as answers are read aloud. During the music portion, short clips play and teams identify details such as the title or artist. Use the same team name each week so attendance is tracked. Nightly prizes include Rare Bird gift cards of $30 for first place, $20 for second, and $10 for third. Teams with perfect attendance for a season receive two rounds of Rare Bird beers for each team member at the season finale, with a maximum of six players counted. Devices like phones, smart watches, tablets, and computers may not be used to look up answers, and sharing or shouting answers outside your team is not allowed. Violations lead to disqualification for the night, and repeat offenses result in removal for the season. This is a community hosted series where teams take turns writing and running the questions, and host teams receive complimentary Rare Bird beers and a $25 food tab during their hosting night, up to six players, with hosting also counting toward perfect attendance. First time hosts submit their rounds ahead of time for review. To volunteer as a host or ask questions, contact Beth Milligan at beth.milligan@gmail.com or 231-342-0611.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE - TCFF Tuesdays WINTER 2026 - TUESDAY, MAY 5TH

Presented at the State Theatre as part of the 2026 Winter season of TCFF Tuesdays, this rescheduled selection showcases Sentimental Value, a Norwegian drama about an estranged family trying to mend itself after the loss of its matriarch. Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are grieving when their father, a renowned filmmaker portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård, decides it is time to rebuild their relationship. He urges his eldest, a dedicated working actor, to take the lead in his most personal project. When she turns it down, he offers the role to Elle Fanning and proceeds to shoot in the family’s childhood home. The film’s unfolding mirrors the family’s struggle to face old wounds and choose between breaking free or embracing their shared past. Recognized at the Cannes Film Festival as a Palme d’Or contender and recipient of the Grand Prize of the Festival, it also holds seven Critics Choice nominations including Best Picture and appears on the Oscars shortlist for Best Casting, Best Cinematography, and Best International Feature.
