An Evening with Dave Eggers

Dave Eggers, widely acclaimed for What Is the What and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, takes the stage for a conversation centered on storytelling, art, and his new novel, Contrapposto, named for the classical term describing a natural, lifelike stance in ancient sculpture. The book follows Cricket Dib and his magnetic childhood friend Olympia Argyros, whose bond begins with a profane act of defacement at a popular playground and stretches over 65 years as they spur each other to make daring work, try to reshape the art world, and hold fast to beauty while navigating charlatans, staying open-hearted and clear-eyed, and even facing the specter of madness and rare cancers. Trained in drafting and painting and seasoned as an illustrator and designer, Eggers will be in conversation with Amanda Uhle, executive director and publisher of McSweeney’s. Live music sets the tone before the talk, and the evening includes a Q&A and an author signing in the lobby afterward. There is no livestream, but an audio recording will be available on IPR following the event. Ticket packages are available with an optional book bundle. Eggers’s body of work also includes Zeitoun, The Circle, and The Museum of Rain. He founded the human rights nonprofit Voice of Witness, as well as Scholar Match and Art + Water, and he cofounded a youth literacy project. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, he has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and he is a recipient of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the American Book Award. In 2024, The Eyes and the Impossible received the Newbery Medal.

Freshwater Fantasies

Viridian Strings presents Freshwater Fantasies, a warmly curated evening that highlights songful lines, vivid color, and imaginative expression across three treasured chamber works. A pre-show Q+A with the artists leads into a performance that opens with Clara Schumann’s Three Romances, Op. 22, setting an intimate and elegant tone. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ early Piano Quintet follows with broad, pastoral character and spacious lyricism. After intermission, Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, the "Trout," brings buoyant rhythms, radiant melodies, and lively ensemble interplay to close the program. The ensemble features violinist Nathan Meltzer, violist Joe Skerik, cellist Kyle Stachnik, double bassist Nina Bernat, and pianist Umi Garrett. Meltzer is a 2023 Concert Artists Guild winner and prize recipient at the Sibelius and Singapore International Violin Competitions, a Juilliard graduate who studied with Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin, and co-founder and Artistic Director of The Green Room Ensemble. Skerik performs with the Vega String Quartet in its residency with the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta, has appeared at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the National Gallery of Art, and serves on the faculty at Emory University while directing chamber music studies at Oxford College. Stachnik is Executive and Artistic Director of Viridian Strings, Professor of Cello at California State University, Sacramento, and holds orchestral positions with the Santa Rosa Symphony and the Bay Philharmonic. Bernat, an Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and first prize winner at the 2023 Concert Artists Guild Elmaleh Competition, has appeared as soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, is a member of CMS Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program, and teaches at Stony Brook University. Garrett, a Young Steinway Artist recognized for collaborative excellence and winner of the John Newmark Prize at the 2023 Montreal International Violin Competition, has performed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Hiroshima Symphony, and New Mexico Philharmonic, and has served as a collaborative pianist and coach at the Yale School of Music and the Aaron Copland School of Music, with summer engagements at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute under Artistic Director Midori.

Contra Dance

Celebrate the season’s finale with a community contra dance at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City, presented by Bayside Travellers. Live music will be provided by the Union Street String Band, and Larry Dyer will guide the figures as caller. A beginner workshop takes place before the dancing begins, and every dance is prompted, so no prior experience is required. Participants may arrive solo, with a partner, or in a group, and it is common to switch partners throughout the evening. Contra is a traditional social dance related to square dancing, arranged in long sets, and the steps are simple walking to the beat while following the caller’s instructions. Admission is by donation, with a suggested range of 10 to 20 dollars per person, and any amount is welcome. Bayside Travellers is a volunteer-run nonprofit, and contributions go directly toward event costs. Payment can be made with cash or PayPal; card payments are not accepted. Snack contributions to share are welcome. A drinking fountain is available, and bringing a reusable water bottle is encouraged since water will not be provided to reduce waste. This is the last dance before a summer pause in July through September, with the series returning in October. The 2026 to 2027 schedule will be announced soon, and photos, videos, and information about other local dance opportunities will be shared during the break.

Summer Solstice Workshop

The summer solstice marks the year’s longest day, a moment of peak light and energy, and this workshop invites you to meet that vitality in your body. Over 90 minutes, you will explore dance and somatic movement to connect with your fullest, most expressive self, with no prior experience required. The session starts with a somatic warmup to wake the body and attune to the season, moves into guided exploration to discover your own expression, then builds into choreography that grows from what you uncover as you move with others, and concludes with an integration practice so it can settle in. Rooted in DanceWell’s belief that what remains unexpressed tends to be stored in the body and nervous system, the experience uses movement where words cannot always reach to shift what is hidden or stuck and to release what is ready to go. It welcomes newcomers and lifelong dancers alike, those seeking depth beyond a usual routine, anyone feeling flat or disconnected from their body, and people who want space to express what language cannot hold, all while greeting the season with their whole selves. Participants have shared that they felt stress lift, reconnected with themselves, noticed easing of ongoing discomfort, slept better, and left feeling energized, focused, and happy. The seven class DanceWell Emotional Landscapes series previously sold out in Mexico City, and this experience now arrives in Northern Michigan. The intention is that you leave feeling lighter, more alive, and more yourself.
