Summer Solstice Workshop

The summer solstice marks the year’s longest day, a moment of peak light and energy, and this workshop invites you to meet that vitality in your body. Over 90 minutes, you will explore dance and somatic movement to connect with your fullest, most expressive self, with no prior experience required. The session starts with a somatic warmup to wake the body and attune to the season, moves into guided exploration to discover your own expression, then builds into choreography that grows from what you uncover as you move with others, and concludes with an integration practice so it can settle in. Rooted in DanceWell’s belief that what remains unexpressed tends to be stored in the body and nervous system, the experience uses movement where words cannot always reach to shift what is hidden or stuck and to release what is ready to go. It welcomes newcomers and lifelong dancers alike, those seeking depth beyond a usual routine, anyone feeling flat or disconnected from their body, and people who want space to express what language cannot hold, all while greeting the season with their whole selves. Participants have shared that they felt stress lift, reconnected with themselves, noticed easing of ongoing discomfort, slept better, and left feeling energized, focused, and happy. The seven class DanceWell Emotional Landscapes series previously sold out in Mexico City, and this experience now arrives in Northern Michigan. The intention is that you leave feeling lighter, more alive, and more yourself.

STEAM Challenge: Bridge to Shark Tooth Island

Challenge Island Northwest Michigan presents a hands-on STEAM experience for families centered on sharks and creative problem solving. Build a maze game to take home by designing a winding ocean route that finishes inside a shark’s mouth, then personalize it with sea creatures, obstacles, and tricky dead ends to shape an underwater world. Assign point values to each creature and try to collect as many food-energy points as possible on the way to feeding the hungry shark, then see who in the family can set the high score. The fun continues with a chance to test your strength on a Da Vinci Dive tank and to craft a cheerful snapping shark.

Your Dinosaur Is Wrong

Steven and Elizabeth of Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong recount the saga of the Bone Wars, the fierce rivalry between paleontologists Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. Their competition to surpass each other sparked theft and bribery, led to fossils being destroyed, and ended in personal ruin. This turbulent period in the early days of American fossil hunting also shaped the stories behind well known dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, Brontosaurus, and Triceratops.

At Mari Vineyards, folk singer songwriter Brittany Jean shares songs and stories. Her repertoire moves from scenes of golden sunflower fields and the Irish coast to reflections on an untamed heart and a secluded cabin in the north, with love woven through every song. Based in a small apple town along the Columbia River in Washington, she has taken her music far from home, from the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville to opening for Three Dog Night at a sold out show in New York City. She has released six studio albums and an EP, each completed in the city known as Music City, and from her sixth album, Colors & Covers, the songs Golden Hour, Lightfoot, and Dear Mr. Green were finalists in the International Acoustic Music Awards. A seventh album is in progress.

Flagship Romance/ The Rough & Tumble at City Opera House

Internationally touring folk and Americana duos Flagship Romance and The Rough & Tumble share the stage at City Opera House for an evening of high energy, four-part harmonies, catchy hooks, and plenty of laughs. Their collaborative Rough Romance show grew out of a chance connection after more than a decade on the road and hundreds of thousands of miles of touring, leading to a camaraderie that shines in performance. Flagship Romance, the married pair Shawn Fisher and Jordyn Jackson, blend striking vocal interplay, heartfelt songwriting, and a spirited presence that turns two voices and an acoustic guitar into a full, immersive sound. The Rough & Tumble, Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler, bring accordions, guitars, ukuleles, and offbeat percussion to songs marked by candid storytelling and finely crafted melodies, as heard on their collection Hymns For My Atheist Sister and Her Friends To Sing Along To. The result is an intimate, welcoming night of music that feels personal and expansive, with four close collaborators trading songs, harmonies, and plenty of good humor in Traverse City.
