📰 In the news
Honoring WWII homefront heroes: Bay City’s 103-year-old Vera Gobeski was awarded the Rosie the Riveter Congressional Gold Medal on Feb. 13. Mayor Christopher Girard proclaimed Vera Gobeski Day to honor her wartime work — read the full story.
Playful pathways to computing: Jerome Green STEM Preschool in Saginaw became Michigan’s first early childhood program to finish a Computer Science for All plan, bringing coding and robotics to four and five year olds — see what kids will learn.
Community priorities and projects highlighted: Earlier this month, Saginaw Mayor Brenda Moore delivered the 2026 State of the City, detailing ARPA spending on youth, mental health, infrastructure, and home repairs at a sold out breakfast — see where funds were spent.
Community partners power family wellness: Saginaw’s Family Play Date in the Park began February 14 and continues through August, with eight free activities at city parks, from snowy fun to sports and play across months — get all the details.
Gold & silver are hot: Coming off gold’s best year since 1979, the momentum is carrying well into 2026 with silver remaining one of the most talked-about assets. Curious why precious metals are back in focus? American Hartford Gold has a free guide that explains what’s happening and how people are approaching it today. It’s free – and definitely worth a read.
Compare rates for free: The national average for car insurance is around $175 per month. Paying more than that? Same, so I did some shopping around and ended up cutting my premium in half. If you haven’t checked in a while, you’re probably overpaying too — here’s the comparison tool I used.
Nothing prepares you for a pet emergency: I learned that the hard way after charging $10k to a credit card for life-saving surgery on my cat, Miss Stache. As soon as we got home, I signed up for Spot. It’s super affordable – and reimburses up to 90% of the bill.

🫶 We got your back
Backing local business ideas: Applications for the 2026 Community Crowdfund are due Feb. 26. Midland Young Professionals will pick one business to lead a community crowdfunding effort and receive a $35,000 grant. Two others will get $6,000 and $4,000 for smaller projects. The program has raised over $270,000 since launching. See how to apply.
New openings and investments: Around Bay County, the area’s first Chick-fil-A opened, bringing more than 100 jobs. Jack’s Fruit & Meat Market in Essexville reopened after a December fire. Entrepreneur Jordan Dice bought Bay City Boat Lines. ShineWater will fund clean water in Northern Ghana. A $70 million Weadock battery project is proposed. Check out the full roundup.
Sugar fix unlocked: At Heather ‘n Holly, find handmade chocolates, over 10 flavors of creamy fudge, and dangerously snackable house-made caramel corn. Shelves brim with old-school candies (yes, Necco Wafers and Razzles), plus an ice-cold Faygo to wash it all down.
Resale with heart: Cat’s Meow keeps great finds flowing: clothing, housewares, and that random thing you didn’t know you needed, all supporting Mid Michigan Community Action locally. When your closet needs a refresh or a donation run, this spot makes doing both feel simple.
What do people see when they search your name? Search results can surface past mistakes or outdated information that no longer reflects who you are. BetterReputation helps remove and clean up unwanted content so your online presence matches your real life today. Not worried about yourself? Doesn’t hurt to mention it to family or friends who might be.
Take control of your credit card debt: High interest can keep you stuck paying more than you need to. A balance transfer card with 0% intro APR until 2027 and no annual fee gives you time to pay down what you owe without interest working against you. By transferring your balance, more of your payment goes toward the principal so you can actually make a dent in what you owe.
