Kate Hinote Trio

A free concert at the Alice and Jack Wirt Public Library spotlights the Kate Hinote Trio as part of their Libraries As Listening Rooms tour. This contemporary folk group tells stories through finely shaped melodies and an intimate acoustic sound that nods to folk, chamber pop, and indie influences. Vocalist and songwriter Kate Hinote performs with guitarist David Johnson, her longtime collaborator from The Blueflowers, and violinist Matthew Parmenter of the art rock band Discipline. Their live show emphasizes the dialogue between Hinote’s clear voice and Parmenter’s violin, which often feels like a second singer, while Johnson’s warm acoustic guitar grounds each piece. The set blends original songs with carefully chosen contemporary and classic covers, including tributes to Detroit songwriters, balancing familiarity with fresh surprises. Their second album, Stowaways, features ten originals centered on narrative songwriting and reflects the trio’s continued evolution. In recent years they have appeared across Michigan, Ohio, New York, West Virginia, and Kentucky, with a featured performance on the NPR and PRX program Red Barn Radio from WEKU in Lexington, Kentucky.

Polish Book Club "The Doll"

Polish Book Club presents a discussion of The Doll (Lalka) by Bolesław Prus, a landmark of 19th century Polish literature. The conversation focuses on Prus’s panoramic view of Warsaw society of that time, reaching from the aristocracy to those living in poverty. At the center is merchant Stanislaw Wokulski, whose devotion to the highborn Izabela Łęcka spurs risky attempts to increase his wealth, acts of charity in the city’s slums, and a reflective midlife effort to better himself and make a lasting impact. Native Plant Garden Tours – Bay County

Experience a two-stop program focused on native plants in Bay County, led by Wild Ones member Jeanne Henderson. Drawing on more than 30 years of adding native species to her landscape, she will share practical insights on both the benefits and challenges of working with natives. The visit begins at a suburban yard featuring woodland perennials that thrive in shade beneath maples, along with sunny beds of pollinator-friendly flowers interplanted with shrubs and evergreens that provide habitat for birds. The group will then travel 1.5 miles to Frankenlust Township Nature Park to learn about an ongoing restoration project. Recent work has included removing invasive plants, drill seeding fields with native wildflowers and grasses, planting native shrubs, and adding eight white birch trees last September with help from Wild Ones. Plans call for planting ten additional maple trees in the fall supported by a chapter grant. Carpooling is encouraged and an RSVP is requested. This program is presented by the Wild Ones Mid-Mitten Chapter, part of a member-based national organization that advances environmentally sound landscaping to support biodiversity by protecting, restoring, and creating native plant communities. A community food giveaway will provide boxed groceries to households. Bring a photo ID. Each vehicle may receive up to two boxes, unless an additional person is physically present and their identity can be verified. If picking up for more than one household from the same vehicle, each household must either be present or supply written permission and identification. If someone is picking up on your behalf because you are working, homebound, or unable to attend, prepare a dated and signed permission note for that specific day that lists your full name, the full name of the person collecting for you, the number of people in your household with their ages, and ensure the person picking up carries a copy or photo of your ID. For check-in, follow the yard signs along the route to text the posted phone number. You will receive a link to a sign-in form. Complete and submit the form, then save the confirmation screen as a screenshot to show staff in the parking lot. If you do not use a smartphone or prefer not to complete the form online, staff can sign you in with a tablet. Please sign in only on the day of the giveaway. If your confirmation does not display the current day, sign in again. Submitting multiple times will not increase the amount of food you receive. To help loading go smoothly, clear space in your trunk or cargo area and have it open or your doors unlocked when you arrive. Do not block driveways and be ready to move if emergency vehicles need access. Thank you for your patience and cooperation, which helps everyone be served safely and efficiently.

If you are picking up for more than one household in the same vehicle, each household must either be present with matching ID, or provide written permission along with ID. If someone is collecting food on your behalf because you are working, homebound, or unable to attend, prepare a permission letter for that specific giveaway. The letter should name the person you authorize to pick up for your household, note how many people are in your household and their ages, be dated, and include your signature. It is valid only for that day. The person picking up must also have a copy of your photo ID, and a phone photo or photocopy is acceptable. For check in, look for signs along the route with a number to text. You will receive a link to a sign in form, complete it and acknowledge the instructions, then keep the confirmation screen with its timestamp. Save a screenshot and show it to staff in the parking lot. If you do not use a smartphone or prefer not to fill out forms online, staff can sign you in on a tablet. Please sign in only on the day of the event. If your confirmation does not display the current date, sign in again. Sign in once only, submitting the form multiple times will not result in additional boxes. For loading, keep a clear space in your trunk or cargo area, open the trunk or unlock a door before you arrive at the loading point, and avoid blocking driveways.
