Quilting for Beginners

Quilting for Beginners is a six-class, hands-on series that walks newcomers through every step of making a quilt. Participants follow a clear pattern while practicing a variety of block techniques, moving from cutting and piecing to assembling the quilt center, adding borders, quilting, and binding. By the end, each student completes a 50 by 50 inch quilt to take home. The curriculum covers fabric selection and design coordination, how to read quilt patterns, accurate cutting, piecing and pressing, border construction, quilting approaches, and finishing with binding. Best for adults, teens, and tweens. Tuition is $120 per student. Before the first session, students should purchase fabric and a few required materials, and a supply list is provided upon registration. Please bring a working sewing machine along with the items on the supply list. The series is led by Amy Bendtsen, a sewist with experience in the quilting industry who aims to make sewing accessible. She is an animal lover and environmentalist studying public policy with plans to work in the nonprofit sector.

Emily Jeanne Brown * Between Howls

Marking 27 years of Wussow's, Wussow's Concert Cafe presents an evening of folk and Americana with singer songwriter Emily Jeanne Brown alongside the duo Between Howls. A lifelong vocalist with training in Shakespearean performance, Brown began recording during quarantine with a stripped down take on Bruce Springsteen's I'm on Fire that earned tens of thousands of streams. She has since released original singles and been noted by Aptly Journal as fitting alongside leading women in indie folk pop, with reference points that include boygenius, Maggie Rogers, Fiona Apple, HAIM, Phoebe Bridgers, Sharon Van Etten and even Taylor Swift's recent work. Brown has also organized community centered, sold out shows at New York venues like Rockwood Music Hall and The Owl Music Parlor, and her songs reflect major life passages, shifts in place from West to East Coast, and the transition from before the pandemic to after. Between Howls, from the Duluth and Superior area, features violinist Ren Howl and guitarist Nick Howl. The husband and wife team blends close harmonies, thoughtful songwriting and agile instrumental work, drawing audiences across the United States since 2018. Tickets are $15 online or $18 at the door.
