Participants should wear clothes that can get messy and bring a water bottle. Finished pieces will be available for pickup after firing, and families will be notified when everything is ready.

Instruction covers safe ways to slow and stop, targeted drills for both skate and classic styles, and how to build an effective roller ski workout. Questions are welcome throughout, and both skate and classic are addressed in every session. Helmets are required, please bring your own. Knee and elbow pads are recommended and bike or volleyball pads are suitable. Ski boots are required, please bring your own. Using techniques also known as eco printing or bundle dyeing, participants place leaves and flowers on a prepared silk scarf, roll it tightly, and steam the bundle. After it cools, the scarf is unwrapped to reveal natural patterns and color. The class is designed for adults and teens. The fee is $35 per student and all supplies are included, so beginners are welcome. If available, bringing red poppies or leaves from a purple-leafed maple is encouraged. Instruction is provided by Theresa Hornstein, an artist who began with knitting and crochet and expanded into a broad range of fiber and craft media, including dye work, ceramics, henna, paper, beads, jewelry, felting, glass, and yarn. She favors recycled and natural materials and enjoys combining methods to create original pieces. Her book Invasive Color is mentioned as a thoughtful companion gift to the class.

Women mechanics offer a maintenance segment focused on pre-ride safety checks and simple bike fit adjustments to enhance comfort. Some prior biking experience is recommended. Beginner Sewing Three Class Series
Learn the fundamentals of sewing in a three-session series designed for beginners. Ideal for adults, teens, and tweens, this course builds confidence with straight seams, basic construction, machine operation, and essential skills like fabric cutting and reading patterns. Participants complete three practical projects along the way, including a pillowcase, a zippered pouch, and a fabric wallet, creating a foundation that can lead to quilting, garment making, and other sewing pursuits. Tuition is $60 per student. Please bring a working sewing machine, thread, a rotary cutter, a cutting mat, a ruler, fabric, and stabilizer. Instruction is led by Amy Bendtsen, a young sewist with experience in the quilting industry who is passionate about making sewing accessible. Young makers will dive into puppetry in a lively, hands-on class designed for ages 8 to 12. Participants will design and build a fancy sock puppet using simple hand sewing techniques and low temperature glue guns, then bring their character to life by crafting a distinct voice, personality, and emotional range. After creating their puppets, they will practice beginner performance skills and step behind a puppet booth to share short scenes with classmates. All supplies are provided. Along the way, students are introduced to materials and methods for sock puppet construction, learn foundational stitching and puppet building skills, explore how to shape a character’s voice and traits, and experiment with introductory techniques for performing with puppets. Instructor Sarah Caffee brings 15 years of classroom experience teaching fifth and ninth grade, along with six years of sock puppet artistry as the creator of Duluth’s troupe Good Puppet Bad Puppet. Over the past year she has appeared at several shows and pop ups around Duluth. She has also performed long form improv since 2016 with groups in Arizona, Washington D.C., and Duluth, and looks forward to sharing her passion for puppetry and performance with students.

Organized by Family Freedom Center, Ignite Empower Transform, and the Duluth African Heritage Commission, this street dance and concert features live performances by local and regional artists, community speakers, and activities for all ages. Programming includes a community basketball tournament, kids games and family activities, opportunities to connect with neighbors from across the Twin Ports, and a marketplace of local food and merchandise vendors. The Unapologetically African interactive exhibit offers a hands-on look at African history, innovation, leadership, and achievement before, during, and after the era of slavery. Raffles, prizes, giveaways, and guest speakers round out the festivities. The broader weekend includes an Elders Brunch honoring generational wisdom and leadership, and the Duluth NAACP’s 52nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration that commemorates freedom, progress, and Black history. Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience and contributions of Black people throughout history. Lawn chairs are welcome, and there are activities for families. Support comes from the Boreal Waters Foundation and the Unity Fund, with additional backing from Nexus Community Partners. There is no cost to attend and the event is open to the public.

Team AFSP Minnesota brings together runners preparing for Grandma’s Marathon, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, and the William A. Irvin 5K during the 50th anniversary year of Grandma’s Marathon. The team supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. Through the AFSP Minnesota Chapter, participants help fund prevention programs, scientific research, public education, advocacy, and support for survivors of suicide loss. Athletes become part of a caring community that raises awareness, honors loved ones, and acknowledges personal healing and grieving journeys, reinforcing that mental health matters and no one has to face it alone. Participants receive a custom race jersey, an online fundraising page with credit card support, guidance on fundraising and training, and a pre-race team dinner. Fundraising minimums are $750 for the marathon and half marathon, and $350 for the 5K. A race registration code is provided once the fundraising minimum is met. Participants who have not raised any funds and do not communicate with the team captain may be removed so a waitlisted runner can take the spot. Registration is open through Team AFSP for all three events. Bibs are unlimited for the full and half marathons, and limited for the 5K. This meet and greet features author and psychologist Mark Langenfeld, who will speak one-on-one with readers about his book, Wisdom from the Woods: A Year of Gentle Guidance from Mother Nature, published by Llewellyn. The book presents fifty-two personal stories that turn observations from nature into simple weekly practices aimed at supporting wellness and joy. With insights drawn from animals like bears, ravens, cats, and snowy owls, these reflections encourage readers to calm inner storms, remove emotional thorns, and nurture a stronger connection to the natural world. Langenfeld holds a Psy.D. in clinical psychology from Alliant International University in Fresno, California. He teaches psychology and sociology at Northwood Technical College in Superior, Wisconsin, previously worked as a counselor beginning in 1994, and practices a blend of Paganism and Buddhist meditation. He is also an avid hiker and gardener.

Learn the fundamentals of quilting in a six-class, hands-on series designed for adults, teens, and tweens. Guided by instructor Amy Bendtsen, who brings experience from the quilting industry and a commitment to making sewing accessible, participants will create a 50 by 50 inches quilt from start to finish. The curriculum covers fabric selection and design coordination, reading and interpreting patterns, precise cutting, piecing and pressing blocks, adding borders, quilting techniques, and binding for a polished finish. The fee is $120 per student.
