If there is thunder, lightning, or high winds, the session will be held inside the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center opens early to accommodate yoga participants. Bring a water bottle, a mat or blanket, a chair or cushion, sunscreen, insect repellent, and any other items you would like for comfort. Workshop: The Third Street Project with Andy DuCett

800 Riverview Dr, Winona · verified Aug 30
    See details

Curiosity about Winona’s Third Street becomes hands-on practice in this two day workshop developed by the Center for Third Street Furtherings in partnership with the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and led by Senior Collection Agent Andy DuCett. A small cohort of trainees begins with onboarding, then trains in methods aligned with DuCett’s artistic approach. Participants learn to notice what is usually missed, from signage and residue to patterns of movement and unofficial histories. They explore drifting approaches to cartography inspired by Denis Wood, building subjective, information-rich maps that favor lived experience over strict accuracy. Time in the field focuses on the Third Street corridor and the wider city, where participants gather and catalog ephemera, fragments, images, and notes as evidence. Back in the studio, findings are shaped into designed outputs such as broadsides, annotated diagrams, fictionalized reports, and micro-publications, with work happening both individually and in collaboration to understand place as relationships, stories, and signals rather than fixed geography. All materials and tools are provided, and no prior field experience is required. The Center reviews submissions for its ongoing publication series, and selected projects are reproduced as official media within DuCett’s exhibition at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, with contributors credited in the archive as Field Agents. This experience offers direct collaboration with an exhibiting artist, insight into how research, fiction, and making intersect in contemporary art, and a chance to contribute creative work to a living exhibition. Enrollment is limited, and additional instructions follow acceptance. Tuition is $250, with a $240 rate for Minnesota Marine Art Museum members. Andy DuCett is an artist from Winona with degrees from the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin–Stout. His cross-disciplinary work has appeared in galleries and museums nationwide and is held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Philbrook Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center. His projects have been featured by Artforum, New American Paintings, the Washington Post, and the Huffington Post, and his clients include Hasbro, Travail Kitchen & Amusements, General Mills, Can Can Wonderland, Target, and Meow Wolf.
