In Search of Sammy Williams with Rachel Phillips and Charlotte Mills

At Bozeman Public Library, Gallatin History Museum staff members Rachel Phillips and Charlotte Mills present an exploration of the historical record surrounding Sammy Williams, a cook who spent many years working for ranches around Manhattan, Montana while being known locally as a man. After Williams’s death, neighbors learned Williams was female, and friends arranged burial in Meadow View Cemetery with a substantial headstone bearing an inscription that notes the name Sammy Williams while the given name remains unknown. The talk follows the trail left in newspapers, voter registrations, city directories, property deeds, and other Gallatin County records to piece together Williams’s life without speculating about personal motivations. Recent findings highlight property ownership and participation in voting before women in Montana had the franchise, opening paths for further research into others who navigated legal limitations to secure rights and responsibilities. Phillips, raised in Bozeman and a Montana State University graduate in history with museum studies training, serves as the museum’s Research Director and oversees its library and collections. Mills, born in Bozeman and raised on a nearby farm, holds undergraduate and master’s degrees in accounting from Weber State University, previously served as Gallatin County Clerk & Recorder and Election Administrator, and now works at the museum as Operations Director.

Wayne 'The Train' Hancock

Wayne “The Train” Hancock brings his signature juke joint swing to the Empire Twin Theatre in Livingston, MT, showcasing a high-octane blend of honky-tonk, western swing, blues, Texas rockabilly, and big band. Since making waves with Thunderstorms and Neon Signs in 1995, he has carved out a singular place in country music by honoring its roots without feeling stuck in the past, keeping the sound stripped down yet full of drive. Expect house-shaking hillbilly boogie and a vibe that recalls the warm crackle of a classic jukebox, all delivered with unwavering authenticity. Admiration runs deep... Hank III praises him as the genuine article, AllMusic highlights how he refreshes vintage styles so they feel timeless, and Slug Magazine notes the way he pushes boundaries while staying true to the core of the genre. As a bit of trivia, he is the only Bloodshot Records artist whose CD has traveled on a space shuttle flight.

Live at the Blake Pavilion: WYLIE & THE WILD WEST

Wylie & the Wild West deliver a lively blend of cowboy, folk, swing, and yodeling that they have shared with audiences since 1989. Their set moves from straightforward country storytelling to playful, tongue-in-cheek numbers, all guided by Montana singer and songwriter Wylie Gustafson, who has released 24 albums and toured internationally for more than three decades. His writing draws inspiration from the wide open landscapes of his home state and a life rooted on a fourth-generation family ranch. The group features Wylie Gustafson on lead vocals and guitar, Clayton Parsons on guitar, and Tim Lashley on drums. In the United States, they have appeared at the National Folk Festival, MerleFest, Bumbershoot, Stagecoach, A Prairie Home Companion, The Conan O’Brien Show, and have made more than 50 guest appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. Wylie is known for an unmistakably authentic voice within country music. Support for this performance comes from Mighty Fine Time Live Events, Home2Suites by Hilton, Walter & Regina Wunsch SPECTEC TIC, and Carol Lalani in Memory of Sal Lalani.

June OUTPOST – Bozeman – Returning to Center: The Labyrinth Walk for Integration & Healing

Female veterans gather in Bozeman for a guided walk on the Bozeman Public Library Labyrinth, an age-old tradition used for transition, reflection, and healing. Across history, warrior communities have treated labyrinths as a sacred threshold where the weight of battle can be released and the shift from survival back to humanity can begin. This walk follows a deliberate path that mirrors recovery and integration. Move inward to let go of what no longer serves, pause at the center to reconnect with your deepest self, then step outward with renewed clarity and strength. Through quiet, movement, and attentive presence, participants are invited to set aside unseen armor and remember who they are beyond service and survival. The focus is not speed, performance, or choosing the perfect route. It is about showing up, walking with intention, and making room for mental, emotional, and spiritual reflection within a supportive circle of fellow women who served. No prior experience is necessary, only a willingness to walk, reflect, and come back to center.

Freezer Burn Party

The inaugural Freezer Burn Party serves as the closing celebration of Elk Week and launches the 2026 big game hunting season. Held in the MTNTOUGH parking lot, at the MTNTOUGH Fitness Lab, the evening highlights good food, cold beer, and connection across the hunting community. Expect multiple cooking stations, complimentary beer from Bridger Brewing, and raffles with enticing prizes that support the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The focus is making the most of wild game already in the freezer. Guests may bring their own ground venison or a few steaks to prepare at Traeger-powered grilling stations on site, with the simple guideline to pack enough to feed themselves and one guest.
