Sacajawea ParkGallatin City: A Place of Promise with Lesley M. Gilmore, AIA, FAPT
This talk traces how an ambitious town at the headwaters of the Missouri River was conceived, relocated, and ultimately eclipsed. The story begins in 1862 on the west bank where the Jefferson and Madison meet, with a carefully planned community intended to supply nearby mining centers such as Virginia City, Last Chance Gulch, and Bannack. Obstacles shifted the effort to the east side of the Madison as Gallatin City II, and later developments led to the town’s decline while Bozeman rose in its place. The setting, a scenic river corridor visited twice by the Lewis and Clark Expedition and offering views of the Bridger, Tobacco Root, and Big Belt ranges, did not receive a railroad and today is preserved as Missouri Headwaters State Park, a National Historic Landmark. The presentation follows the community’s trajectory and points to the two remaining buildings that preserve its legacy. Lesley M. Gilmore, a registered architect with more than thirty years devoted to historic preservation, has worked across the Rocky Mountain West, including projects in Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, at Montana State University, and at Bannack, Fort Owen, and Missouri Headwaters State Park. She serves as secretary on the board of The Extreme History Project.
