At Wachholz College Center, CelloGayageum offers a vivid conversation between cello and gayageum, the traditional 12-string Korean zither. Formed in 2016 by Austrian cellist Sol Daniel Kim and Korean virtuoso Dayoung Yoon, the ensemble grew from inspiration found at Berlin’s Pavilion of Unity and celebrates connection across instruments, traditions, and people. Their music draws on Korean folk roots and a wide global outlook, creating original pieces that feel both timeless and freshly contemporary. Dayoung Yoon performs and composes for the duo. She studied at Korean National Traditional Arts High School and the Korea National University of Arts, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Her career has included solo work in France, Germany, and Italy, as well as teaching at the Berlin Korean Cultural Center. Her contributions to the ensemble have been honored with the Soorim Cultural Prize, Jeongdong Theater’s Youthful Artist of the Year, a role as Director of the Young Gugak Orchestra at Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, and first prize in the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation’s Youth Song. Sol Daniel Kim, born in Vienna, trained at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He represented Austria at Eurovision Young Musicians and has collaborated with orchestras including the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra. After meeting Yoon in Berlin, he co-founded CelloGayageum and continues to craft new work for the project.
