CelloGayageum brings a vivid meeting of Eastern and Western traditions to Wachholz College Center, uniting the resonance of cello with the shimmering voice of the gayageum, a traditional Korean plucked zither with 12 strings. Their original compositions grow from Korean folk melodies and are shaped by a broad global sensibility, creating a sound that feels both time honored and new. Formed in 2016 by Austrian cellist and composer Sol Daniel Kim and Korean gayageum virtuoso and composer Dayoung Yoon, the duo grew from a connection made in Berlin and takes inspiration from the city's Pavilion of Unity, celebrating links between instruments, histories, and people. Yoon trained at the Korean National Traditional Arts High School and the Korea National University of Arts, later performing in France, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere, and teaching at the Berlin Korean Cultural Center. Her work with the ensemble has been honored with the Soorim Cultural Prize in 2018, Jeongdong Theater's Youthful Artist of the Year in 2020, leadership of the Young Gugak Orchestra at Seoul Namsan Gugakdang in 2021, and first prize in the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation's Youth Song in 2021. Kim, born in Vienna and a graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, represented Austria at Eurovision Young Musicians and has performed with orchestras including the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra. The new material turns a clear eye toward relationships and the effort it takes to stay connected, shifting between propulsive energy, close harmonies, and moments of space. Across the record, the band ranges from quick-picking bluegrass to songs colored by folk and rock, with touches of country and indie. Brand New Heartache marries rock-leaning verses to a chorus with bluegrass lift as it follows the aftermath of a breakup and the cautious hope of starting over. Blind opens on a memorable riff and faces regret with a pull toward becoming better. Long Ride surveys life in a touring band, while Nothing New and The Lie consider rigidity, misinformation, and division.
