    The Takes

The Evening Muse, 3227 N Davidson St, Charlotte · verified Oct 2
    See details

Presented by Confluence and Blue Ave Music, this Confluence 26 installment spotlights The Takes alongside Joe May. The Takes are a Portland, Oregon folk-rock trio where sturdy guitar-driven riffs meet heartfelt songwriting. Sumner Rahr (guitar, vocals), Guido Rahr (guitar), and Phoebe Webb (bass) craft songs that balance feeling and escape while staying rooted in rock tradition. Their EP Lay Hold leaned further into country and blues textures, led by Sumner’s gritty vocals and an earthy blend of guitar, drums, and bass. That momentum carried them to debut sets at Bonnaroo, BottleRock, and Extra Innings Fest, as well as two headline runs across the United States with sellouts in New York City at Mercury Lounge, Chicago, and Colorado Springs. They followed with the bright single Take My Time produced by Jon Gilbert and turned the page with a third EP, Uprooting Roses, created with producer David Baron, paired with support dates for The Runarounds and appearances at Treefort Fest and Calgary Stampede. With millions of streams and past support slots for Houndmouth, Wilderado, Briscoe, and Penelope Road, they continue to build a community around songs made for right now. Joe May brings tight, quick, and playful piano-forward rock shaped by a mix of 70s pop polish, McCartney-like melodicism, and the rhythms of his Brazilian roots. His performances blend lively arrangements, witty storytelling, and spontaneous improvisation, delivering sunny grooves and a sound that nods to classic influences while feeling fresh.

Live music from Michael Blakey blends rock, indie, and folk into a dynamic set. A Midwesterner with boundless energy, he pairs optimism and hope with a grounded outlook shaped by real life miles, from living in a minivan to touring the country in a Subaru. He left Missouri in 2012 to search for himself, and that quest still informs his songs, which wear their feelings openly and connect through vulnerability on and off stage. Each piece reveals another layer of how he understands himself and the world. The performance moves across moods and styles, shifting from delicate fingerpicking that reaches the heart to high octane bursts, whether he is leaping from the drum riser or joining a circle pit in the crowd. His presence is charged and welcoming, and audiences leave with a smile.

    Kenny Wayne Shepherd

    Knight Theater , 430 S Tryon St, Charlotte · verified Oct 2
    See details

Kenny Wayne Shepherd first broke through in 1995, when a teenage guitarist from Shreveport helped push the blues back into the spotlight with raw fretwork, catchy hooks, and deep respect for the music. He has since revisited his debut, Ledbetter Heights, with a new recording that stays true to the original while revealing tighter arrangements and more nuanced playing. The album’s name honors a historic neighborhood in his hometown and pays tribute to fellow Northwest Louisiana great Huddie Ledbetter. His dedication to carrying the blues forward has remained a guiding mission throughout his career. The Ledbetter Heights 30th Anniversary Tour brings that legacy to the stage with a complete live run-through of all 12 tracks, followed by a second set that draws from three decades of music. Presented by Shepherd and his band, this performance at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts in Charlotte offers a focused look at the album that started it all alongside highlights from the years that followed.

Earl Scruggs Center, 103 S Lafayette St, Shelby · verified Sep 27
    Free

Discover how early residents of Cleveland County brought color to everyday life using the resources around them. European settlers and Native communities gathered clay from rivers, harvested timber from the forests, grew flax, and sheared sheep for textiles. In this presentation, Catherine Ellis explores the centuries-old traditions of natural dyeing and how they inform modern practice, explaining the dye process and spotlighting regional plants that historic makers used to enliven their cloth. Members attend for free, non-members pay $5, and an optional pre-ordered lunch is available for $15.
