Cat's Cradle presents MAN MAN at Motorco Music Hall – with Death Valley Girls

Presented by Cat's Cradle, Man Man headlines Motorco Music Hall with support from Death Valley Girls. Led by Kattner, known as Honus Honus, the project’s recent work on Carrot on Strings leans into a looser, live-in-the-room feel, drawing on a mix of Krautrock propulsion, dance rhythms, and no-wave tension alongside film influences. The palette spans Iguana, sparked by looping ideas and reflections inspired by Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams with a playful nod to Old Yeller, to Odyssey, which tips its hat to Rainer Fassbinder, and Blood Dungeon, where Italo-disco shine meets goth-tinged mood. Additional tracks such as Cherry Cowboy, Pack Your Bags, Mulholland Drive, and Cryptoad reveal twang, chant-ready surges, and moments of clear-eyed introspection. The result is a night centered on adventurous, genre-blurring rock from Man Man with Death Valley Girls setting the tone.

THE NEVERENDING STORY & LEGEND: Theatrical Cut

Two 1980s fantasy films screen back to back at The Carolina Theatre of Durham. First is Wolfgang Petersen’s The NeverEnding Story (PG, 1984, 102 minutes), where Bastian, a boy hiding from bullies in an old bookshop, opens a volume that pulls him into Fantasia. Through its tale he follows the warrior Atreyu on a mission to help the Childlike Empress and stop the devouring force known as the Nothing, encountering creatures such as Falkor the Luckdragon and the Rock Biter. The program then presents Ridley Scott’s Legend in its theatrical cut (PG, 1985, 90 minutes). In a lush mythical realm guarded by unicorns, the Lord of Darkness, portrayed by Tim Curry, schemes to cast the world into night. Tom Cruise appears as Jack, who gathers elves and fairies to rescue Princess Lili, played by Mia Sara, and face the ultimate threat. This version of Legend features the Tangerine Dream score.

TOMMY OEFFLING AND THE B-TEAM

Presented by andmoreagain, Tommy Oeffling and The B-Team take the stage at Rubies on Five Points in Durham, NC. Oeffling writes and records in a second-floor bedroom of a Milwaukee duplex, letting the small sounds of the room and the occasional imperfect take stay in the mix so the music feels unfiltered and closely tied to his upbringing, including the songs his dad once loaded onto an old iPod Nano. He is studying to become a high school history teacher, enjoys cooking for friends, and is known for long walks, a laid-back streak that has led many to describe his sound as slacker rock. His album Picture of Health packs ten songs into roughly 34 minutes, reflecting everyday moments of being twenty. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 on the day of the show.

SwanBean Quintet

The SwanBean Quintet spotlights straight ahead jazz with a clear devotion to the form’s roots and language. Co-led by vocalist Mavis SWAN Poole and drummer Jeremy BEAN Clemons, the group arose from New York City’s rich scene as a focused complement to their genre-blending project, Soul Understated, channeling their energy into classic jazz improvisation and harmony. Poole, fondly nicknamed Little Ella by trombonist Curtis Fuller, is a vocalist, songwriter, and educator known for the rare ability to sing multiple notes at once. Her studies at North Carolina Central University, where she graduated magna cum laude, and Queens College in New York inform a career that includes appearances with Lauryn Hill, Prince, After 7, and The Legendary Wailers, as well as teaching as a Vocal Jazz Professor at NCAT. Within this ensemble she centers her voice on unfiltered jazz expression. Clemons, a St. Louis native, pairs power with melody behind the kit. Early experiences with the Royalaires Drum and Bugle Corps founded by his grandmother and the World Champion Phantom Regiment laid the groundwork for Jazz Studies degrees at NCCU. His résumé spans touring with the Andy Bey Quartet, serving as drummer for reggae legend Burning Spear, and collaborations with electronic pioneer DJ Carl Craig. His unrelenting groove and detailed phrasing anchor the band. Together they honor the lineage of classic jazz while carving their own space through swing, interplay, and craft. Formed in New York, the quintet has appeared on stages that include Smalls Jazz Club, underscoring its place in the city’s jazz community. The lineup features Mavis SWAN Poole on vocals, Jeremy BEAN Clemons on drums, Kevin Beardsley on bass, Chuckey Robinson on piano, and Tinashe Blu on saxophone.

CHICAGO & CABARET

The Carolina Theatre of Durham presents a back-to-back screening of two landmark movie musicals. The program opens with Rob Marshall’s Chicago (PG-13, 2002, 113 min). In 1920s Chicago, chorus hopeful Roxie Hart and headliner Velma Kelly land on death row and vie for the help of smooth-talking attorney Billy Flynn. Their struggle to avoid execution becomes headline-grabbing entertainment that blurs the line between notoriety and fame. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and features high-energy musical numbers and razor-sharp satire. The evening continues with Bob Fosse’s Cabaret (PG, 1972, 124 min). Set in 1931 Berlin, American singer Sally Bowles performs at the Kit Kat Klub as the Nazi party rises, while the enigmatic Master of Ceremonies presides over a glittering refuge from the encroaching turmoil. Fosse’s direction and choreography shape a haunting, sophisticated musical, highlighted by Liza Minnelli’s Academy Award winning performance.
