    Robert Lester Folsom

Motorco, 723 Rigsbee Ave, Durham · verified Oct 2
    See details

Presented by Cat’s Cradle, Robert Lester Folsom appears at Motorco Music Hall. A songwriter from Adel, Georgia, he spent the early 1970s capturing songs on a two track reel to reel in bedrooms, a barn and a motel room across the state, collaborating with musicians such as guitarist Hans VanBrackle. That fertile stretch informs Sunshine Only Sometimes: Archives Vol. 2, 1972–1975, a collection that highlights mellow folk, rural hues and bright melodic pop. His sole contemporaneous album, Music and Dreams from 1976, later resurfaced through Anthology, tracing smooth West Coast AOR alongside the Laurel Canyon singer songwriter tradition. Early pieces like Ease My Mind, Julie and Lonely Lovers reflect the range in his writing, from country tinges to gently off kilter psych. From garage band experiments and the Abacus era to fully formed studio work, the performance centers a catalog shaped by craft, collaboration and melody.

    Sub Urban w/ Golden Cats

Stanczyks Music Bar, 1007 W Main St, Durham · verified Oct 2
    See details

Presented by andmoreagain, Sub Urban brings The Bell Tolls Tour to Stanczyks in Durham with Golden Cats. Sub Urban is the creative identity of Daniel Virgil Maisonneuve, a Taiwanese American artist who writes, sings, and produces his own work, recognized for Cradles, an RIAA double platinum track. Since that breakout, he has forged a moody, high voltage strain of dark pop that fuses theatrical, macabre touches with unusual textures and ear catching hooks. Golden Cats brings an indie pop rock sound that mixes nostalgic alternative flavors with crisp pop songwriting and a playful, story led universe. In their first year they surpassed 20 million streams and neared 200,000 followers across platforms while developing their career with the artist incubator Not a Label. Vocalist Laura Dalla, known as Black Cat Girl, and drummer producer Kyle Lenski, known as Retriever Boy, create and refine every song from a bedroom studio. Before teaming up, Laura launched a solo path via a joint venture with Universal Music Group, and Kyle toured as a drummer, building an online following of more than 2 million through viral performances. Their fan community, the Kittens, connects with both the music and the characters, lore, and optimism that shape the Golden Cats world. Their name traces back to a rehearsal for another band when a child’s offhand comment about their contrasting looks sparked the Black Cat Girl and Retriever Boy personas. Tickets are on sale. Admission is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show.

    Old-Time String Band Revue

Huron Stage, 2329 Huron St, Durham · verified Oct 2
    See details

This outdoor string band concert features traditional tunes and songs. In case of rain, the music will move into the dive bar. A suggested donation of $10 to $20 supports the performers. Performers include Amy Davis on banjo and guitar and Jon Newlin on fiddle, longtime collaborators united by a love of old-time music. Their experience spans more than 15 years with the North Carolina singing string band The Hushpuppies, tours and recordings with the Maudlin Brothers, and several projects with their niece Elizabeth LaPrelle, as well as a recording with fiddler Bob Herring as the Red Herrings. They also play with their daughter, Iris Newlin, and other family members as Elizabeth LaPrelle and the Family Band, and with local groups Spiral Cut and Half Hog. Iris is a singer and fiddler grounded in the songs and tunes she grew up with; after forays into songwriting and classical violin, she always returns to folk traditions. She enjoys making music with family and community and writes poetry in her spare time. Devon Flaherty & His Railroad Ramblers, featuring Andrew Walker on fiddle and Andrew Berger-Gross on guitar, are an award-winning old-time trio from the Raleigh-Durham region of North Carolina. With deep ties to the Carolina Piedmont, they honor local traditions while thoughtfully adding their own voice. Regulars at fiddlers’ conventions and festivals around the country, they have earned recognition both individually and as a group. Flaherty also performs with The Three-Top Serenaders and the American Primitive-style trio Grant/McGuire/Flaherty, and Berger-Gross sometimes performs with the Oak City Serenaders. The Oak City Serenaders share string band music rooted in the turn of the 20th century, spotlighting popular dances from Italy and the Americas. Drawing on archival research and seasoned musicianship, they present rare gems ranging from ragtime and mazurka to tango and tarantella. The trio features Andrew Berger-Gross on mandolin and guitar, Sam Harris on banjo, guitar, and mandolin, and Julia Illana on mandolin. Presented by andmoreagain, Great Lake Swimmers bring the Caught Light Tour 2026 to Motorco. Advance tickets are $22, with $27 pricing on the day of the show. Caught Light is the band’s ninth album, created in Ontario’s Ganaraska Forest with producer Darcy Yates and engineer multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Bowskill. Founder Tony Dekker is joined by drummer Gary Craig, with additional harmonies by Colleen Brown. Songs such as One More Dance Around the Sun, Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, and Running Out of Time reflect themes of home, friendship, and urgency. The album title speaks to finding your way when plans shift, inspired by childhood memories of skydivers drifted off course. andmoreagain brings Be Your Own Pet’s 20th Anniversary Tour to Stanczyks in Durham, NC, with Farmer’s Wife and Mean Habit sharing the bill. Fresh from recent SXSW appearances, Nashville’s Be Your Own Pet has returned with the single Hand Grenade on Third Man Records, the band’s first new release since the 2008 album Get Awkward. Founding members Jemina Pearl Abegg, Jonas Stein, and Nathan Vasquez are joined by longtime drummer John Eatherly, carrying forward the high-energy spirit that has drawn praise from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. Austin’s Farmer’s Wife blends 90s dirge rock, 60s psychedelia, and flashes of 80s cool into intense, story-driven songs that move between fragility and force. Interlaced guitars and hypnotic rhythms can open into free-form excursions, and the EP Faint Illusions pushes their recurring themes of decay and romance into a grittier space. North Carolina’s Mean Habit delivers a queer, femme-forward take on hardcore-inspired post punk, channeling raw emotion into personal and political lyrics that confront transphobic fetishization, the dynamics of intimate partner abuse within patriarchy, and the reclamation of dehumanizing spaces while urging autonomy and love. Advance tickets are $22.50, with $25 pricing on the day of the show.

    Little Women

319 Lynn St, Danville · verified Sep 27
    See details

Experience Louisa May Alcott’s classic in a fresh stage interpretation by Heather Chrisler. Framed as a play within a play, four performers summon the spirited March sisters through recollection and make-believe. As Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy move from girlhood to adulthood during the Civil War, they encounter love, loss, and the search for their own voices. A lean, high-energy staging steps away from Victorian formality to spotlight sisterhood and the exuberance of telling stories together. The result is a brisk, lyrical evening that salutes the narratives that shape who we become. A VIP preview is reserved for Patreon supporters, sponsors, and invited guests.
