Difficult experiences, whether isolated or repeated and whether rooted in childhood or more recent, can narrow life’s sense of ease and possibility. The Audacity to Be You Retreat: Learning to Love Your Horrible with Rotten Self Brad Reedy, Ph.D.

639 Whispering Hills Rd, Boone · verified Sep 13
    See details

An immersive retreat with Dr. Brad Reedy and Emma Reedy June invites participants to reconnect with the parts of themselves that were set aside in order to get by. Identities built around approval, achievement, control, and perfection once offered protection, yet over time they can create pain. Through a blend of attachment-informed teaching and mythic storytelling, the experience gently guides a shift from inner criticism to compassion, from survival habits to a grounded sense of self acceptance, and from uncertainty to clear awareness. Participants explore how early bonding and childhood experiences shaped coping styles, relationships, and recurring dilemmas. There is an emphasis on integrating the disowned aspects of one’s story so that judgment can soften into care for oneself and others. The work also highlights relational dynamics such as projection and other unconscious patterns in marriage, parenting, and partnership, offering pathways to respond with steadiness instead of reactivity. Personal responsibility is reframed as a compassionate practice, recognizing how once-helpful defenses may now stand in the way of growth and freedom. Compassionate connection is presented as a powerful support for nervous system regulation, helping safety feel tangible. Life challenges are viewed through the lens of the Hero’s Journey, inviting meaning, direction, and purpose within struggle. The week focuses less on collecting techniques and more on meeting yourself in a new way. As understanding deepens, long-standing symptoms and defenses begin to make sense, and what seemed like failure can open into integration. In a supportive environment, the nervous system has space to orient toward belonging rather than fear. Many leave feeling more connected to themselves, with greater tenderness and clearer ways of showing up in love, parenting, partnership, and purpose. Content includes attachment-based psychoeducation to illuminate how early bonds shape patterns, guided psychodrama to process core emotional themes experientially, and an immersion in the Hero’s Journey inspired by Joseph Campbell. Mindful reflection through meditation and structured journaling supports self-observation. Intimate small-group and dyad conversations cultivate safety, vulnerability, and integration. Creative practices with drawing, art, and storytelling invite insight that reaches beyond analysis.
