Exhibition: "AT WHAT POINT DOES A CIRCLE BREAK TO FORM A SPIRAL" by Tom Braswell

Wilson Arts Center, 204 Nash St E, Wilson · verified Aug 9
    Free

North Carolina artist Tom Braswell presents a solo exhibition that reflects on the instant when a closed loop gives way to growth, inviting viewers to consider how repetition can become expansion and how perception can open to new dimensions of understanding. Bringing together decades of exploration, the presentation spans photography, sculpture and assemblage, conceptual work, printmaking, and installation to trace connections across science, philosophy, ecology, and visual culture. Braswell draws on enduring interests in quantum theory, four-dimensional space, Zen, pataphysics, art theory, and the intricate ties between the natural world and human-shaped environments. Working with varied materials and processes, he unsettles familiar ways of seeing and encourages attention to the hidden frameworks that inform experience. Across media and disciplines, the exhibition follows an ongoing search for links between the physical and the metaphysical, the visible and the unseen, the cyclical and the transformative. The spiral, a form that both circles back and moves forward, emerges as a fitting metaphor for artistic practice itself, a process of returning to core questions while opening new possibilities for meaning. As visitors engage with these photographs, objects, and installations, they are prompted to reflect on their own place within larger systems of change and continuity. In this body of work, every circle hints at a spiral and each act of looking becomes a moment of discovery. Admission is free and all are welcome. Presented with support from David and Susan Boyette, Melanie Mauzé, Rebecca Tighe, and Marcia and Buster Williamson.
