    Repair Café

Charlotte · Innovation Barn, 932 Seigle Ave

    Free

At Innovation Barn in Charlotte, Repair Café brings neighbors together to revive broken household items while learning practical DIY skills that keep useful things out of the landfill. Friendly volunteer repair coaches work alongside attendees to guide the process, and no prior experience is needed, just curiosity and the items that need attention. Participants stay with their belongings as troubleshooting and fixes happen together, making this a do-it-together experience rather than a drop off. Volunteers have skills across many common home repairs and provide tools. Limited replacement parts may be available, and if a specialized component is required, the item can be brought back once the part is secured. For safety, hazardous items are not accepted, including firearms, microwaves, or similar risks. Volunteers are community repairers rather than licensed specialists, and highly specialized work such as fine art restoration should be handled by a professional. Everyone remains with their item throughout the process. Repair Café is part of a global movement that began in Amsterdam in 2009 and now includes more than 3,000 locations focused on reducing waste, sharing skills, and building community through hands-on learning. Repair Café Charlotte launched in 2024 and continues with regular gatherings at Innovation Barn throughout 2026, offering a chance to fix something, pick up new skills, and connect with a growing local repair community.

Sun & Ski Sports - Charlotte Group Ride

Charlotte · Sun & Ski Sports (Charlotte, NC), 10710 Providence Rd

This weather-dependent group road ride departs from the Sun & Ski Sports store parking lot and welcomes cyclists across a range of abilities. Groups roll out in short intervals along a course of gentle hills through South Charlotte, Waxhaw, and Marvin in North Carolina, continuing into Lancaster County in South Carolina. The focus is on fitness, recreation, friendly competition, and building connections within the cycling community. Riders can choose from several pace options. The A group averages 20 mph or more over roughly 35 to 42 miles without regrouping and with no planned stop. The B group targets about 18 to 19 mph, rides tight pacelines, includes one rest stop, and regroups only occasionally. The C group rides near 16 to 17 mph for approximately 27 miles, uses pacelines, plans one stop, and regroups several times. An intermediate option typically covers 27 or 35 miles at around 17 to 18 mph with one stop and several regroup points. A beginner option may be added based on interest at about 14 to 16 mph over roughly 27 miles, designed for conversation, endurance building, and skills development, with one stop and a policy that no rider is left behind. Basic support is available before rollout, including quick mechanical assistance and the chance to pick up last minute essentials by credit card, and the store and restrooms are open ahead of departure. Safety is emphasized. Helmets are mandatory, road bikes are strongly recommended, and lights plus protective gear such as glasses and gloves are encouraged. Riders are expected to handle simple fixes like a flat tire or brake adjustment, bring their own hydration and nutrition, carry a phone and emergency contact information, and know the route or have it saved in case they become separated. Many routes share space with urban traffic, so ride predictably, never cross the yellow line, and keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times. Participation is at the rider’s own risk, and everyone is responsible for their personal safety before, during, and after the ride.
