    Benny Green brings a storied jazz journey to Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club. Born in New York City and raised in Berkeley, he was introduced early to the music through his father’s saxophone and a home collection featuring Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, and other seminal artists. He began on piano at seven, played his first paid gig at twelve, and made a notable concert debut at fifteen at the Monterey Jazz Festival with the MJF High School All-Stars. As a teen he performed frequently with vocalist Faye Carol and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Eddie Henderson, then moved to New York, where guidance from Walter Bishop Jr. and Walter Davis Jr. led to early work with Barry Altschul, Bobby Watson, and Jo Jones Jr. His career includes international touring with Betty Carter, contributions to her Grammy-winning Look What I Got, an impactful tenure with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, time with the Freddie Hubbard Quintet, and a long run with the Ray Brown Trio. As a leader he recorded for Criss Cross and then Blue Note, while Oscar Peterson named him his protégé in 1992 and selected him for the Glenn Gould Award for excellence in Music and Communication. Recording highlights also include a duet with Diana Krall on her Grammy-winning All For You, two leader albums for Telarc along with duo projects with Russell Malone, and the two-piano set Oscar and Benny with Peterson. In recent years he has continued to lead his trio and release albums on the Sunnyside label. At the club, seated dining begins when doors open, with full table service from your ticketed seat and no reservations required. Guests may order food and drinks before the music starts or throughout the performance, and the wine program has earned consecutive honors from Wine Spectator.
