    Brennan Wedl

The Red Room at Cafe 939, 939 Boylston St, Boston · verified Oct 9
    See details

Brennan Wedl, raised in Minnesota and based in Nashville, writes from the perspective of someone long in search of herself and now settling into authentic ease. Through spiritual curiosity, empowerment, and renewed playfulness, she shaped an album that bears her name, loosening the grip of outside expectations and savoring the relief of being exactly who she is. It unfolds as a collaborative journey with earlier and future versions of herself, and with the friends who steady the way, tracing both the chaos and the victories that come from leaving a conventional route. Its familiar glow comes from themes many recognize, including the awkward, uncertain stretches of growing up, and the discovery that the anchor you seek can be found within. Sub*T, the New York indie rock duo of Grace Bennett and Jade Alcantara, began as a 2010s online friendship that evolved into a band after they learned guitar in 2019. Drawing on classic alt rock, grunge, and indie influences, they developed a voice of their own. Their debut full-length, How My Own Voice Sounds, follows the EPs Spring Skin, created with Aron Kobayashi Ritch of Momma, and So Green, made with Alicia Bognanno of Bully. Through rich vocal textures, vivid songwriting, and candid lyrics, the album explores identity, growth, grief, humor, and self-discovery.

Illustrated Pottery - The Art of Sgraffito

The Wheel House, Portsmouth · verified Oct 9
    See details

Treat your pottery as a canvas in a four week course that blends wheel throwing with the decorative technique of sgraffito. Whether your style leans toward botanicals, bold patterns, playful illustrations, or clean contemporary motifs, you will learn how to turn everyday forms into functional pieces of art. In an easygoing and supportive studio setting, start by making cups, bowls, or plates on the wheel. As your forms develop, experiment with underglaze colors, then practice sgraffito by carving through those layers to reveal patterns and fine details beneath the surface. Over the span of the course, build skills in throwing and refining functional ware, plan thoughtful surface designs, explore carving and illustration, and finish up to four uniquely decorated pieces from start to finish. Each work you create reflects your own vision while you enjoy the calm, rhythmic process of working with clay and connect with fellow makers in a welcoming studio community. By the end, take home a small collection of illustrated pottery that is both useful and personal. This class is suitable for beginners as well as those looking to grow their surface design skills, offering a rewarding way to explore one of ceramics’ most expressive approaches.

    Edgar Allan POE: Asylum

Clay Hill Farm, 220 Clay Hill Rd, Cape Neddick · verified Oct 9

Inspired by The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether and guided by the charming yet eccentric Monsieur Maillard, the evening unfolds over multiple courses as Poe’s words are performed right at the table between dishes. The program traces a chilling path from Berenice through The Tell-Tale Heart to The Raven as dessert arrives, building an atmosphere of creeping dread and lyrical melancholy. Seasonal touches, house specialties, and an ominous estate staff heighten the immersion, creating a close-up encounter with classic gothic horror designed for an intimate setting. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Tickets are $30 per person, plus the cost of food and beverages, with a $35 per person food and beverage minimum. Victorian Gothic attire is welcome but optional. Due to dark and grisly themes, this experience is not recommended for young viewers and is rated PG-13. Performances often sell out quickly.

    Djékady

The Dance Hall, 7 Walker St, Kittery
    See details

A six-piece led by Grammy-winning collaborators Balla Kouyaté and Mike Block brings Malian roots into conversation with American folk and contemporary sounds, creating music that lifts spirits and gets people moving. The group’s name, Djékady, comes from Mandinka and expresses that coming together is good, a guiding idea woven through their performances. The lineup features Balla Kouyaté on balafon and vocals, Mike Block on cello and vocals, Mamoudou Konate on djembe, Idrissa Koné on talking drum, calabash, percussion and vocals, Luke Okerlund on guitar, and Mike Rivard on bass and sintir. From early childhood, Kouyaté continued an eight-century family tradition of balafon playing in the Kouyaté lineage of Niagassola on the Mali Guinea border. His family are griots, or djelis, who safeguard and share history through storytelling, music, counsel and peacemaking. That heritage meets American traditions here, allowing fresh growth from deep cultural roots. This concert also serves as the Seacoast release celebration for Benkan, Djékady’s debut album. Benkan means agreement in Mandinka, and the recording highlights how global connections can broaden what American music can be. Tickets are $28 in advance, $33 on the day, and $18 for students. Additional fees apply, including a $3 facility fee per ticket and credit card processing fees. Supported in part by the New England States Touring program through the New England Foundation for the Arts, with resources from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies.
