    NSCC Annual Quabbin Cruise 8

Staples, 60 Pearson Blvd, Gardner · verified Sep 27
    See details

After a year away and many requests, the Quabbin Cruise returns for its eighth running as a public drive celebrating colorful foliage and wide-open views. Previous editions have brought out more than 150 cars, and organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout this time. All makes and models are welcome, while motorcycles and street bikes are not permitted for safety reasons. The route begins at the Staples in Gardner, then heads west on Route 2. Drivers are asked to stay together where the highway narrows after Exit 82 and to use a zipper merge so the group does not get split up. The cruise continues to an observation tower via Routes 202 and 9 using the second dam entrance, then wraps up with a lunch stop at Stone Cow Brewery in Barre, where local brews and ice cream are available. Plan for roughly 75 miles with no fuel stops, so vehicles should be fueled in advance. A walkie-talkie is recommended since cell service will be limited for much of the drive. Please follow the directions of the hosts, keep the driving respectful, and avoid reckless behavior. Participants are responsible for their own actions, including any accidents or tickets. A map of the route is available in the discussion tab, and details may be updated.

Half-Baked Stories About My Dead Mom

Emerson Colonial Theatre, 106 Boylston St, Boston · verified Oct 2
    See details

This American Life host Ira Glass teams up with acclaimed Israeli writer Etgar Keret for a live stage version of their podcast, Half-Baked Stories About My Dead Mom. The performance blends humor and emotional depth as Keret shares compact, four to five paragraph pieces that together reveal the many sides of his mother, Orna. The project took shape after a bus ride out of Tel Aviv, when a story Keret told convinced Glass it could become a show. Keret had written on countless subjects yet found it difficult to write about his mother until these brief vignettes emerged. Orna comes across as both loving and vengeful... part Maria from West Side Story and part Thanos from the Marvel universe... a person capable of striking, extreme actions. In developing the material with Glass, Keret came to see that his taste for the fantastical grew from being raised by a mother who made the surreal feel ordinary.

    Wilderness Survival 1

Townsend Public Library, 12 Dudley Rd, Townsend · verified Oct 2
    See details

Get grounded in essential outdoor know-how with an introductory wilderness survival class focused on staying warm, hydrated, and nourished in the backcountry. Designed for hikers, backpackers, hunters, trail runners, and anyone eager to spend more time outside, it builds confidence, expands practical knowledge, and strengthens a personal connection to nature. Wilderness Survival 1 can be taken on its own or as part of the OEWS Alula Certification path, and successful completion fulfills the prerequisites for Wilderness Survival 2 or 3. Participants receive an OEWS logo patch along with a feather patch at the end. Training covers careful use, sharpening, and safety of carving tools, five fundamental knots, fire making with modern ignition methods, rabbit stick technique, shelter construction with contemporary gear, methods for disinfecting water, smart clothing choices for conditions, foraging guidelines and ethics, how to assemble a dependable survival kit, planning and mindset for challenging scenarios, and navigation with map and compass. Students should bring an OEWS Basic, Complete, or Ultimate Survival Kit or an equivalent setup, with the Complete Kit suggested for a single-package solution. Wear clothing suited to weather and insects, pack plenty of water plus extra to put out fires, bring lunch and snacks, a seat such as a camping chair, a baseplate compass, and an optional notebook and pen for taking notes. At minimum, plan to have a carving tool, a ferro rod or matches, a poncho or large trash bag, about 12 feet of rope, and whatever you need for personal comfort and safety. Loaner items are available, and carving tools and fire starters can be purchased at the start of class. The Complete Kit can be paired with a compass and poncho for a strong starter setup, and all suggested gear has been vetted by the instructional team. Instruction happens entirely outdoors in a forest setting a short walk from parking, so dress for the weather, especially cold conditions, and pack extra layers. Those interested in a specialized carving tool may look into The Talon, a design by lead instructor Tim Swanson, handmade by Jackson Mills of Freedom Forge with custom handle and sheath options. Builds typically take a few weeks and often cost around 200 dollars, depending on customization. The class is oriented toward adults, though mature minors are welcome at a parent’s discretion. Anyone under 18 must attend with a parent or guardian. One ticket applies to one participant regardless of age. Sessions run year round, entirely outside, and proceed rain or shine. If conditions are unsafe, the class will be canceled and students can reschedule. Instruction is led by Tim Swanson, founder and lead instructor of Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival, alongside apprentices and co-instructors.

He writes under his own name as well as the pen names Michael Manley for suspense and Fred Marple for Yankee humor, and he created the bestselling Sing Along and Learn series published by Scholastic.

    Sol Y Canto and more

NOVA ARTS, 48 Emerald Street, Keene · verified Sep 27
    See details

NOVA ARTS welcomes a dynamic pairing of Sol y Canto and Doozy Jane. Sol y Canto is an acclaimed Pan-Latin ensemble led by singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and guitarist, singer, and composer Brian Amador. Their performances highlight Rosi’s clear, expressive vocals, Brian’s rich Spanish guitar work, and songwriting that blends poetry with playful twists. They share original pieces alongside distinctive versions of beloved Latin songs, shaping a sound that feels larger than a duo through intricate guitar lines, cajón and bongos, and spirited vocal improvisation. Their concerts reach listeners whether or not they speak Spanish, and they have appeared at major cultural venues and festivals since the mid-1990s. Their artistry has drawn praise from the Boston Globe and from critic Norman Weinstein in the Christian Science Monitor and the Boston Phoenix. At times they perform with guest virtuosos from Latin America, the United States, and Spain. Doozy Jane brings four voices and a vibrant string band sensibility rooted in American harmony traditions, lively swing, and fiddle-driven grooves. Their arrangements favor close treble harmonies and spotlight songs by women and queer artists. Alongside their own writing, they choose lesser-known but finely crafted covers colored by swing and gospel influences and a taste for the unexpected. The group’s name nods to arranger Anna Patton’s grandmother Jane, who loved the challenging inner lines of barbershop singing, a spirit reflected in the quartet’s approach. Their sound is shaped by bass guitar, tenor guitar, twin fiddles, and clarinet. The lineup features vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Anna Patton, singer and fiddler Sarah Hadley Yakir, Julia Read on voice, fiddle, and guitar, and Haley Anderson on bass and vocals. This event is open to all ages. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. With support from Savings Bank of Walpole, an Access For All option allows a name-your-price ticket. To purchase more than one of that option, each ticket must be processed as a separate transaction.

    See details

Discover the craft of hand-cut wooden puzzles in a fine woodworking workshop led by David Beffa Negrini, presented in association with the League of NH Craftsmen. Participants learn the essentials of using a scroll saw while creating a personal jigsaw puzzle measuring about 4" x 6" from high quality Baltic birch plywood. A selection of prepared designs is provided, and instruction focuses on clean, precise cuts and techniques that produce a satisfying, handmade finish. David Beffa Negrini founded Fool’s Gold in 1997 with a dedication to exceptional wooden jigsaw puzzles. His work is cut with an ultra-fine blade and often pairs 1/4" solid basswood with a double-thick striped mahogany veneer. After cutting, each piece is hand oiled, waxed, and polished, then placed in a gold lamé pouch inside a carefully crafted black box. He is a Juried Member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, a past president of the Association for Games & Puzzles International, and the organization’s current Quarterly editor.

Townsend Public Library, 12 Dudley Rd, Townsend · verified Sep 27
    See details

Explore the traditional craft of transforming deer hides into soft buckskin in a three day, hands-on class led by Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival. Participants learn the complete braintan process from start to finish, including how to source and store a skin, then dry, scrape, soften, wring, and smoke it, followed by ideas for turning the finished material into clothing or crafts. Hides are supplied by local hunters who harvest deer for meat and donate the skins. Students typically work in pairs on a single hide and take home a share of the buckskin they helped create. All necessary materials are provided, and recommendations for optional personal equipment will be shared ahead of time for those who prefer to bring their own. This is a physically demanding class that rewards patience and persistence. Instruction takes place in all weather, so participants should dress for changing conditions and bring their own food. Those traveling from out of town should arrange lodging, and organizers can suggest nearby hotels or campsites. It is not an overnight campout, and each day wraps up when the day’s work is complete. Real animal skins are used. Students will handle tasks such as scraping away tissue, hair, and other material. Hides are kept fresh and frozen, and gloves, aprons, and a hand washing station are provided. Participants should arrive hydrated, well fed, sober, and ready to work hard. Instruction is provided by the Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival team.
