The Santa Cruz group began as a high school party outfit playing surf rock covers at birthdays and family get-togethers. Nearly 25 years on, longtime friends Raul Bianchi, Adam Peterson, and Geoff Weers, with bassist Ryan DeMars who joined in 2000, deliver a distinctive mix of ska, surf rock, punk, reggae, and metal shaped by a relaxed beach-town upbringing. Their latest streaming track, Surfman Cometh, leans into a surf-charged spaghetti western flair and is the first piece to emerge from sessions in their upgraded Band Room, a longtime rehearsal space in a 1,100 square foot warehouse that once served as a wine cellar on Coral Street, where the final mix was handled in-house. A Westside road cycling meetup at Emerald Necklace Marina-Cleveland Metroparks rolls out after a brief overview and safety talk, weather permitting. If weather forces a cancellation, the Official CTC Event label is removed. Only CTC members have USAT supplemental insurance during CTC sanctioned activities. Non-members may take part, but anyone riding unsafely can be asked not to participate. Riders should already be comfortable sharing the road with traffic and understand cycling rules. Helmets are required. High visibility is encouraged, including front and rear lights and bright apparel. Everyone follows traffic laws, stops at signs and signals, avoids riding in an aero position so brakes remain within easy reach, and keeps communication courteous. The ride separates into pace groups A, B, C, and sometimes D. A is for experienced group riders and can build to about 20 to 22 mph on the way out with faster efforts on the return and is a drop ride. B typically rides around 19 to 21 mph. C usually rides near 17 to 19 mph. D is a no drop option for those newer to group riding or looking to stay under 16 mph and includes guidance on paceline and bike handling. Group speeds refer to riding in a draft, which is often faster than riding solo. Availability of the D group can vary with interest and season. The format uses a single paceline. Riders take agreed upon pulls, hold the group’s target pace, rotate safely to the back on the left if they do not wish to pull, and signal clearly if they need to drop out. Hold a steady line and avoid sudden braking or surging. Call out and signal slowing, red lights, and hazards such as approaching cars, bumps, potholes, branches, or wildlife. If you see unsafe behavior, speak up to help prevent accidents. Emergency contact numbers are provided for Westside and Southside riders. Many participants head to Market afterward for food and drinks. Have fun.
