Relic, a period-instrument chamber orchestra, brings the myth of Venus and Adonis to life in “The Blood of the Rose,” a storytelling concert woven from Baroque music that spans Europe and Latin America. Drawing inspiration from Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco’s La Púrpura de la Rosa, the first opera performed in the Americas, with a libretto by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, the program follows the lovers from their first spark through Mars’s attempts to break them apart to a sorrowful end. The narrative unfolds across five musical chapters, each shaped by brief spoken passages from Calderón’s text, with a special focus on Spanish and Latin American repertoire and works inspired by the Venus and Adonis tale. Music by Torrejón y Velasco appears alongside selections by Roque Jacinto de Chavarría, Juan de Araujo, George Frideric Handel, John Blow, Alessandro Scarlatti, and others. Now in its third season, Relic is known for presenting early music in ways that feel close, creative, and theatrical, earning praise from New York Classical Review for its inventive style. The group’s chapter-based approach welcomes both new and seasoned listeners into a cohesive concert experience. Performing are violinists Aniela Eddy, Kako Boga, Laura Lutzke, Rebecca Nelson, and Toma Iliev, violist Graham Cohen, cellist Cullen O’Neil, bassist Sue Yelanjian, Robert Warner on harpsichord and organ, Daniel Swenberg on theorbo and guitar, and Georgeanne Banker on bassoon and recorder.
