Reading Buddies offers new and emerging readers a welcoming space to build confidence and enjoyment in reading. Each participant is paired with a trained teen volunteer for a 30-minute session that includes fun literacy activities and shared reading in a supportive setting. Volunteers do not provide formal instruction, but they help reinforce the skills children are already learning in school. Elementary-aged readers are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are encouraged to pre-select books at a comfortable level, and a small selection will also be available.

This is a bracketed competition with four players per console and four races in each heat, with points from those races added together. The two highest scorers in every round advance. The final also features four races, and the player with the top total in that last set is crowned champion. Settings are 150cc, items on Normal, random tracks, and scoring follows the game’s standard system. Matches may take place on different platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 64, and Wii. Wild Things Games hosts a release event for Gundam GD04: Phantom Aria. This tournament uses a sealed format, and each participant receives four Phantom Aria booster packs to construct a 30 card deck. Entry is $25 and the field is capped at 24 players. Matches are best of one with 30 minute Swiss rounds, and there is no top cut. A BandaiTCG+ account is required. For every entrant, $5 goes into a prize pool that will be awarded to the top finishers at the end of the event.

German Classics WorkshopNPJ Men's & Women's 6's Tourney
An indoor 6-on-6 volleyball tournament for men and women takes place at NPJ Sports Complex, with separate divisions and a 24 team limit evenly split between them. Competition opens with pool play that determines seeding, then moves into a double elimination bracket. Four team pools play a single set to 28 with a hard cap, while three team pools play two sets to 21 with a cap. In bracket play there is no point cap, the winners bracket is best two of three to 21, 21, and 15, and the losers bracket is one set to 25. Rally scoring is used, let serves are allowed, pursuit is not permitted, and standard net rulings apply. Setting the ball over the net may not involve a double contact on the second or third touch. To be eligible for bracket play, each player must have participated in at least one pool game. Teams can secure a spot by requesting entry or completing the registration form, and entries require full payment and a roster or they will be moved to the interest list. Early bird pricing is $180 per team, and the standard fee is $210 per team. Prizes are awarded to first and second place. Free agents are listed for both divisions, and teams are already registering.

April Class Schedule
April features a weekly lineup of dance classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. On Mondays, Level 1 Night Club 2-Step and Level 1 Ballroom Waltz are offered. Tuesdays feature Variety Level 2 with optional open practice afterward. Wednesdays focus on West Coast Swing with a Beyond Basics session followed by Level 1, and practice time after. Each class is structured as a four-week series for April. A minimum of four couples, or eight people, is required for a class to run. The price is $45 per person for all four sessions in the series, with a discount available for taking more than one class. Seattle-based saxophonist, flutist, and composer Mark Lewis leads a set of original jazz. His career spans more than four decades with creative chapters in Seattle, San Francisco, Rotterdam, and Paris, and his catalog now exceeds 1,800 compositions. He has released over twenty albums as a bandleader and has worked with George Cables, Essiet Essiet, and David Friesen, with honors that include recognition in the Jazz Station Awards and the Cadence Magazine Critics Poll. The quartet features guitarist John JB Butler, bassist John Mazzocco, and drummer Chris Lee. Lewis and Butler first met in the Netherlands in the 1980s and later performed together in the Mark Lewis International Quintet alongside musicians from India, Holland, West Africa, and South America. Presented in connection with UNESCO’s International Jazz Day, this appearance offers Salem audiences a way to mark the occasion with original pieces delivered in a melodic, straight-ahead style from an artist praised by Seattle radio veteran Jim Wilke and by Jazz Journal in the United Kingdom.

To honor Historic Preservation Month, Charles F. Sams III, an American conservationist and nationally respected voice for Indigenous stewardship of land and water, offers a presentation that explores our collective responsibility as culture-keepers and how preservation safeguards shared history for generations to come. Also known as Mockingbird with Big Heart, Sams is a native of Pendleton, Oregon, and was the first Native American to lead the National Park Service, serving as director from 2021 to 2025. His experience spans public service, nonprofit leadership, and tribal advocacy, including work with the Trust for Public Land, the Earth Conservation Corps, and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. He currently serves on the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, bringing insight shaped by history, policy, and lived experience at the intersection of conservation and cultural preservation. This program is presented in partnership with the City of Salem and is funded in part by the National Trust Preservation Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The training combines flexible online study with in-water practice. It features a five-part eLearning component, two pool training days, and an open-water weekend during which the certification dives are completed. Course topics include assembling and using scuba equipment, buoyancy control, respectful interactions with marine life, and approaches for handling common underwater problems. The emphasis is on building confidence and solid dive skills.
