Art Conversation with Ahuva S. Zaslasky and Shoshana Gugenheim Kedem

An artist conversation brings together Oregon-based creators ahuva s. zaslavsky and Shoshana Gugenheim Kedem for a thoughtful exchange about their practices and their long-running work nurturing spaces for Jewish artists in Portland and beyond. They will share current projects and reflect on more than a decade of building programs that support creative community. Ahuva, a visual artist and poet based in Portland, explores how space and place intersect with memory and trauma, experiences of displacement and belonging, power relations, and unmet human desires. Rooted in Jewish myth and an ongoing dialogue between maker and material, her practice considers cycles of creation, transformation, and change, and spans writing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and additional media. She is the creator of Between These Borders Wanders A Golem. Shoshana, an American and Israeli social practice artist, Torah scribe, and curator, co-founded the Art/Lab Jewish Artists Fellowship. Her work often lives where tradition meets change, emerging through collaborations with public and private audiences in diverse settings that range from prisons and houses of faith to museums, schools, fields, and rivers. The conversation will be held at The Bush Barn Art Center & Annex. Admission is free, and RSVPs are recommended.

Summer Kickoff Coed & Women's 4's Tourney

NPJ SC Coed and Women’s 4’s Volleyball Tourney brings indoor quads competition to the NPJ Sports Complex with a 24‑team cap, evenly split between women’s and coed divisions. Pool play leads into bracket play, and your results in pools determine seeding. Prizes are awarded for first and second place. Tournament videography is provided by ZekeVisualZ. Teams can request a spot by posting or by completing the registration form. A full roster and payment are required to secure entry, and teams without full payment may be moved to the interest list. The entry fee offers an early bird rate of $110 per team, otherwise $140 per team. Format details include four‑team pools playing a single game to 28 with a cap at 28, or three‑team pools playing two games to 21 with a cap at 21. Bracket play is double elimination with no point cap. The winners bracket is best two out of three sets to 21, 21, and 15, while the losers bracket is a single game to 25. Indoor rules apply as follows. All players are front‑row eligible. The women’s division uses a women’s height net and the coed division uses a coed height net. Coed teams must have at least one woman on the court at all times. Setting a serve or any first ball is allowed. A block does not count as a team contact. Double contact on the first ball over is allowed. Directional blocks and sets sent over the net are permitted, and sets over the net do not need to be square, but double contacts are not allowed when setting the ball over on the second or third contact. Open hand tips are legal. Service must rotate among teammates, though positions do not need to rotate. Contact with the net by hair or clothing is not a fault. Rally scoring is used, let serves are playable, and safety rules prohibit impeding another player, including going under the net and making contact. Players may not fully cross the midline. Current women’s entries include Big Arm with Brooklyn Byers, Tiffany Ignotovich, Avari Ridgway, and Ainslie Ridgway, along with teams led by Celena Maxwell, Kendralee Schneider, Aiyana Henderson, Hana Yamaguchi, and Emma Ehlers that will finalize team names and rosters. Restoring an Ancient Forest: Wildfire Recovery Efforts

At Venti’s Cafe + Beer Vault, the seventh Science Pub with Salem Talks Science explores how the ancient forests of Opal Creek are recovering after wildfire. Jennifer Johns of Chemeketa Community College and Megan Selvig of the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center launched a community science project in 2022 to study six culturally significant locations in the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation and Wilderness Areas following the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire. Drawing on four years of work with students, community members, and colleagues, they will share findings on plant, lichen, and bird communities across sites that ranged from severely burned to mostly unburned. The program includes plenty of photos, interactive activities, and an eye toward the future. This free, all ages gathering does not require tickets. Seating can be limited, so arriving early is recommended. Food and drink purchases are optional, and supporting the venue is encouraged. Smith Kennels Foundation Seminar hosted by: Side by Side Upland Dog Training

Bird dog owners receive guidance on the essential skills every working dog should develop, with an emphasis on three core behaviors: staying with the handler, coming when called, and remaining still in exciting moments. Instruction begins with a loose lead heel, progresses to heeling off lead, and builds toward a dog that goes with the handler at a distance in the hunting field. A reliable recall is reinforced as the base for natural retrieving. Steadiness is practiced in many contexts, including on point, during a back or honor, beside the owner, at gates and doors, on the veterinary table, and in other everyday situations. Participants also work directly with their dogs on socialization and general manners, cultivating prey drive through bird work, learning to work scent, shaping a consistent point, introducing honoring scenarios, using tie-outs, running checkcord drills, establishing clear points of contact for handling and stopping, reinforcing obedience, and refining loose lead heeling.

Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening

Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening brings a powerful tribute to the Elsinore, led by a drummer whose career bridges his own path with the legacy of his father, Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham. From early work in Airrace and Virginia Wolf to recording with Jimmy Page on the gold-certified Outrider, Jason has performed alongside Page, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant, including the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary celebration and the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert that set a Guinness World Record for ticket demand. That historic night led to the Celebration Day film and multiplatinum album, a Billboard Top 10 release that earned a GRAMMY. His credits also include projects like Black Country Communion and California Breed, appearances in the film Rock Star with Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Anniston, and time with Foreigner, Little Steven, Joe Bonamassa, Paul Rodgers, and Sammy Hagar and the Circle with Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani. Launched in 2010, this production has filled venues across the country, shared bills with artists such as Heart and Kid Rock, and drew praise from Rolling Stone for performances that honor the sound of the originals. The show blends first-rate musicianship with striking visuals, dynamic lighting, and heartfelt storytelling that connects past and present through the songs of Led Zeppelin.
