    Alash & Kyle Press

    2223 E Dauphin St, Philadelphia
    See details

An evening of adventurous sound pairs Tuvan throat singing with experimental saxophone soundscapes. Alash, a trio renowned for xöömei, the art of producing multiple tones at once, brings traditional songs shaped by a light touch of contemporary ideas. Trained since childhood by Tuvan musician Kongar-ool Ondar and educated at Kyzyl Arts College as Tuva opened to Western influences, the group earned recognition in international xöömei competitions both together and individually. Their music weaves intricate harmonies, Western instruments, and contemporary forms while remaining true to Tuvan roots. The program also features Kyle Press presenting the Susurrus / Murmuration release show on Strange Mono. Press builds improvised worlds with saxophones, flutes, throat singing, whistles, bells, and more, drawing on looping, delays, ring modulation, distortion, and amplification. Side A layers four saxophone parts in expansive loops. Side B centers on tenor sax, which is not his usual horn, and ventures into synthesis approaches that inform future work. The textures can turn funky, and the evolving pedal setup feels almost alive. Accessibility information: there is a ramp into the lobby, then seven stairs lead into the theater. Supported by a sponsorship grant from the Penn Treaty Special Services District.

    Beaded Wire Spiders

    Stewartsville · verified Oct 11
    See details

In Stewartsville, NJ, a hands-on wire and bead workshop invites participants to craft a shimmering spider sculpture that leans more enchanting than eerie. Using simple wire and a mix of beads, attendees will build a three-dimensional, poseable piece that works beautifully as a handmade accent for shelves, desk edges, or decorative displays. The guided session walks through every step of the process. It starts with creating the body by securing two larger focal beads with wire wrapping to form the head and main segment. Next comes measuring, shaping, and attaching eight articulated legs, followed by bead patterning that layers seed beads, bicones, rondelles, and other accents to add texture and depth. Clean finishing loops at the tips of each leg keep the beads in place and allow realistic posing. Instruction highlights core jewelry and wire-wrapping techniques that turn loose components into a sturdy work of art. All structural wire, professional tools such as wire cutters and round-nose pliers, a variety of beads including faceted crystals, pearl-like rounds, natural lava stone, and metallic elements, and step-by-step guidance are provided. The class is led by Shawnda Camsari, an artist who spent 15 years in chemistry before returning to the studio after raising two children. Through The Knotted Rose, she focuses on intricate wire wrapping, needle and wet felting, and micro-macramé, often sourcing high-quality, reclaimed materials from a local craft thrift charity to blend a meticulous scientific eye with the organic character of handmade art.

    feeble little horse

Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St, Philadelphia · verified Oct 9
    See details

feeble little horse brings the bitknot tour with Snuggle. The show spotlights the band’s third full-length, bitknot, a record written, arranged, produced, and recorded by Sebastian Kinsler, Lydia Slocum, and Jake Kelley across their homes in Pittsburgh. Built on the tension between human impulse and a culture of convenience, the album fuses gritty and digital textures, balancing buoyant arrangements and Slocum’s wandering reflections with catchy melodies, waves of noise, a surge of synths and samples around a guitar-forward core, and some of Kelley’s most precise drums to date. The artwork nods to classic core memory matrices, suggesting a wired grid where each bit holds a hidden detail, and the songs search for new ways of connection and interdependence beyond material self-sufficiency in a world that blends offline life and the web. This event welcomes all ages. There is a strict ticket limit, and orders that exceed it may be canceled without notice. For ADA assistance email UTassistance@bowerypresents.com.
