Shaver’s Creek staff member Alexa Sarussi leads a free, in-person morning of nature journaling centered on ochre, one of humanity’s oldest pigments. With guidance from the Center for Virtual/Material Studies, participants explore this natural, inorganic earth pigment found underfoot, learn about historical and modern methods for extracting it, then work through the steps to produce pigment together. The Center for Virtual/Material Studies is a university-level research center in the Department of Art History that investigates the material qualities of historical objects and develops virtual ways to convey those qualities while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. All ages, families, and individuals are welcome. Parents are encouraged to bring children who are genuinely interested in nature drawing and to monitor their behavior. Youth participants must be accompanied by an adult participant. Advance registration is requested.
