Cefalo's Banquet & Event CenterDavid S. Schaff Lecture: Healing Body and Soul
The David S. Schaff Lecture, Healing Body and Soul, offers a look at the ties between faith and medicine in early modern Europe. Presented in person at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and available online, the program features a keynote by Dr. Esther Chung-Kim. She examines how some 16th-century physicians, believing that a divinely ordered world contained remedies for illness, turned to the Bible as a resource for medical study. Drawing on its healing stories, practitioners found support for treatments and therapeutic approaches, and they gathered both clinical observations and moral guidance from scripture. Dr. Chung-Kim’s research into medical publications from the period shows that this body of knowledge served multiple purposes, including offering preventive insights, all in service of healing.
