    Brennan Wedl

The Red Room at Cafe 939, 939 Boylston St, Boston · verified Oct 9
    See details

Brennan Wedl, raised in Minnesota and based in Nashville, writes from the perspective of someone long in search of herself and now settling into authentic ease. Through spiritual curiosity, empowerment, and renewed playfulness, she shaped an album that bears her name, loosening the grip of outside expectations and savoring the relief of being exactly who she is. It unfolds as a collaborative journey with earlier and future versions of herself, and with the friends who steady the way, tracing both the chaos and the victories that come from leaving a conventional route. Its familiar glow comes from themes many recognize, including the awkward, uncertain stretches of growing up, and the discovery that the anchor you seek can be found within. Sub*T, the New York indie rock duo of Grace Bennett and Jade Alcantara, began as a 2010s online friendship that evolved into a band after they learned guitar in 2019. Drawing on classic alt rock, grunge, and indie influences, they developed a voice of their own. Their debut full-length, How My Own Voice Sounds, follows the EPs Spring Skin, created with Aron Kobayashi Ritch of Momma, and So Green, made with Alicia Bognanno of Bully. Through rich vocal textures, vivid songwriting, and candid lyrics, the album explores identity, growth, grief, humor, and self-discovery.

Presented by Mandorla Music and Non-Event, this program features a solo performance by saxophonist, composer, and activist Caroline Davis in Anderson Auditorium at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Rooted in improvisation and social inquiry, her sets for saxophone and electronics unfold spontaneously in response to the space and the people present. She draws on interactive technologies to shape unusual textures and highlight the instrument’s distinctive, quirky character. Based in Brooklyn, Davis is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition and a DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star, with additional fellowships from NYFA, the Jerome Foundation, Chamber Music America, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell, The Jazz Gallery, Civitella, and the Rockefeller Estate, and she has mentored with New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists including Allison Miller, Lee Konitz, John Zorn, Angelica Sanchez, The Femme Jam, Miles Okazaki, Nicole Mitchell, Rajna Swaminathan, and Matt Mitchell. Recent work includes Portals, which reflects on grief and memory, and contributions to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards. She also teaches courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintains a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Trumpeter Kelly Bray and drummer Denver Nuckolls open the program. Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the door, $10 for students, and free for attendees under 18 and for EBT or WIC cardholders. No one is turned away for lack of funds.
