Niantic wraps up Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a ladies night gathering in the greenhouse, following the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Walk that opened the month. A wide range of craft are welcome, including SUP, prone, surfski, C1, C2, K1, and K2. Registration is $49 and must be completed in advance, since same day sign ups are not available. Entries received by the race T-shirt cutoff include an event shirt. Check in and a safety briefing take place before staggered starts, with the long course heading out first and the short course following. A post race barbecue with a DJ caps the day. The Griswold Volunteer Fire Department brings back its decades-old chicken barbecue, a takeout-only tradition that has been perfected since the early 1950s. Experience a twist on MTG Commander where players build complete decks from mystery cards, then put them to the test in competitive pods. Entry is $10. At the start, each participant receives three legendary creatures and chooses one to lead the deck, and these commander options cannot be traded. Decks are constructed from the bulk boxes, and any cards selected for building are yours to keep, along with your promos and commanders. Deckbuilding time is limited to 90 minutes, and collaboration is encouraged, including helping others finish on time, with awards recognizing teamwork. After construction, pods are assigned at random. Each round runs 90 minutes, so keep a steady pace. Prize support scales with participation. Basic lands are supplied for play and must be returned afterward, and special lands are only allowed if they come from the bulk selection or are issued as promos.

The Wolf Den is a non smoking entertainment venue with limited seating available on a first come, first served basis. Guests may line up no sooner than three hours before the show. Set in the Burlingame State Park Picnic Area, this trail race offers 4 mile and 8 mile options on mostly dirt paths with some stretches of dirt and asphalt road. Check in and bib pick up are available on site, with registration inside the cabin, and parking in the DEM picnic area lot. To help spread out the field, both routes begin with just under a mile along Sanctuary Road, a low traffic dead end dirt road. From there, the 8 mile course turns right and follows single track counterclockwise around Watchaug Pond before returning to the picnic area lot. The 4 mile course continues straight into the DEM owned Kimball Preserve, makes a loop through the Burlingame State Park campground, and heads back to the same start and finish via Sanctuary Road. The 8 mile distance has a two hour cutoff, equal to a 15 minute per mile pace. After that point, support, official timing, and post race food may not be available, so plan accordingly. Walkers are welcome and are asked to select the shorter 4 mile course. Strollers and dogs are not permitted on the course. Hot soup, food, and cider are served after the finish for all participants. For safety, every participant and volunteer must wear at least 200 square inches of orange in accordance with a State of Rhode Island DEM mandate, and anyone not meeting this requirement will not be allowed to race. Awards are presented in both distances to the top male and female overall, plus first place in male and female age groups. For the 8 mile race, age groups are 13 and under, 14 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 plus. For the 4 mile race, age groups are 19 and under, 20 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 plus. Entry fees vary by registration period, ranging from 30 to 42 dollars for adults and 25 to 37 dollars for ages 18 and under. A 5 dollar discount is available to pre registered WTAC members, and a 2 dollar discount to Mohegan Striders.
