Brittany Perham Author Talk and Signing

Mystic · Bank Square Books, 80 Stonington Rd

Bank Square Books hosts a conversation and signing with Brittany Perham focused on her memoir, Executrix. The book opens with a pressing question after years of estrangement from her father, who, shortly before he died, named her the executor of his estate. Perham traces the painstaking work of settling a debt-laden estate, drawing on the vocabulary of foreclosure, tax audits, and medical records. As executor she turns scattered facts into a clear ledger for creditors, and as a writer she shapes those same fragments into a narrative accountable to memory. Along the way she examines what it means to grow up with an alcoholic parent, how to live with gaps and silences in recollection, and how truth functions in nonfiction. With a blend of humor, tenderness, and bold formal choices, the memoir probes family histories and secrecy while testing the edges of the genre. The event includes a signing. Perham is also the author of Double Portrait, which received the Barnard Women Poets Prize, The Curiosities, and a collaborative project with Kim Addonizio titled The Night Could Go in Either Direction. Her work appears in publications such as Poetry, Prairie Schooner, Gulf Coast, the Poetry Society of America, and the San Francisco Chronicle. She has been supported by the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Hemingway House, the James Merrill House Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, the Wallace Stegner Fellowship Program, and Yaddo. She lives in San Francisco.

    The World of Bats

Westerly · Barlow Nature Preserve, 449 Westerly Bradford Rd

Timed for the Halloween season, this program explores the world of bats with expert Julia Chase-Brand. Known to many from Nickelodeon as the Bat Lady and recognized as a pioneering distance runner, she also made history as the oldest person to earn a medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University. Growing up in Groton, Connecticut, she spent more than a quarter century studying bats in the mountains of Trinidad and the rainforests of Australia. The discussion delves into myths and realities, explaining why blind as a bat is a misconception. Bats in the Americas use echolocation, and research shows they also depend on vision for navigation, avoiding obstacles, escaping danger, and even recognizing patterns when it suits their needs. A vivid range of species takes the spotlight, including red, white, and striped bats, bats that fish, bats that build tents, bats that eat frogs, and even frogs that prey on bats. Field stories introduce other unforgettable animals too, from an amorous gorilla to a tarantula measuring seven inches and a friendly capybara that liked to curl up with people. The program engages both children and adults and highlights a lifetime of exploration, discovery, and learning. Parking is available at Barlow Nature Preserve. WLT members and youth may attend at no cost, and not-yet members pay $10 per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and space is limited.

Kim Harrington (A Killer for Christmas) and Ashley Cowan (Not Another Christmas Movie) Weekend Book

    Mystic · 80 Stonington Rd

Bank Square Books hosts a weekend signing with authors Kim Harrington and Ashley Cowan, highlighting two holiday romances. Harrington will be signing A Killer for Christmas, a seasonal love story woven with a murder mystery. After losing her job and boyfriend, Kelsey Hendricks heads to Christmasville, Maine, to manage the town’s social media. Surrounded by lights and candy canes and caught between two charming contenders, she seems to be living a movie… until a string of deaths threatens the town’s cheer. Determined to restore the festivities before visitors back out, she follows the clues through a snow-dusted investigation. This novel is Harrington’s adult mystery debut with Crooked Lane Books, and she is also known for teen and younger reader titles such as Clarity, Perception, The Dead and Buried, Forget Me, Revenge of the Red Club, the Sleuth or Dare books, and the Gamer Squad series. Cowan will be signing Not Another Christmas Movie, a rom-com where thirty-something Annie Meyers wakes up inside a TV-style holiday film set in her hometown. Her former almost-boyfriend, Chris, is now a widowed Christmas tree farmer, and her once-dorky neighbor, Nick, isn’t so dorky anymore. To break free, Annie and Nick agree to play along with classic rom-com beats… she will pursue Chris while he reconnects with Bailey. After holiday hoedowns, ice skating, and cookie-baking montages, Annie begins to wonder if love and seasonal magic are closer than she thought. Cowan is a Connecticut-based playwright with work in The Applause Acting Series: 25 10-Minute Plays for Teens, and her plays have been staged from San Francisco theaters to Texas schools and community venues across the tri-state area.

Mary Fahl, formerly of October Project - Wintersongs and Carols

Old Saybrook · The Kate - Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main Street

Mary Fahl, former lead singer of October Project, brings a program of holiday classics and winter-themed songs with her band led by producer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Doyle. The performance features selections from her album Winter Songs and Carols alongside favorite Christmas standards. Celebrated for a voice that listeners and critics alike describe as deeply transporting, Fahl first came to prominence with the mid-1990s New York City chamber pop group October Project, known for lush harmonies, sweeping melodies and her distinctive vocals. Her career since has spanned writing and recording for film, including the theme for the Civil War epic Gods and Generals, performing arias and medieval Spanish repertoire for Sony Classical, and releasing a full-album reimagining of Dark Side of the Moon. Her earthy contralto has drawn comparisons from Sandy Denny to London Grammar’s Hannah Reid, and the cinematic, romantic character of her music even inspired author Anne Rice to feature her voice in The Wolves of Midwinter. In recent years, Fahl has toured and recorded on her own Rimar Records imprint, earning an Indie Acoustic Award for Best Live Album for Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House and a 2020 Independent Music Award for Winter Songs and Carols. Her 5.1 surround Blu-ray From the Dark Side of the Moon, mixed by Bob Clearmountain, received the 2021 Immersive Album Audio Listener’s Choice and was named Immersive Album of the Year by Life in Surround. Her latest project, Can’t Get It Out of My Head, revisits formative influences with fresh interpretations of songs by Pink Floyd, George Harrison, the Moody Blues, ELO, the Rolling Stones and Neil Young. This concert blends the warmth of the season with the evocative voice and storytelling that define her artistry.

Fantastic Cat -“The Harlem Globetrotters of Americana” - Rolling Stone

Old Saybrook · The Kate - Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main Street

Fantastic Cat delivers an inventive spin on rootsy rock, drawing praise that compares them to show-stopping all-stars in Americana from Rolling Stone and to a hip hop collective’s chemistry in the folk rock realm from The Village Voice. The group unites four acclaimed singer songwriters who regularly rotate lead vocals and instruments, a setup that feeds an onstage energy best experienced in person rather than summed up on the page. Their debut, The Very Best of Fantastic Cat, sparked broad attention that included a national TV appearance, sold-out headlines across the United States and Europe, a stop at the Sundance Film Festival, and a song placement in the Paramount+ series Tulsa King. Two years later, Now That’s What I Call Fantastic Cat arrived with a cameo from Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, led to dates with Dawes and Lucius, and prompted WFUV to call them one of New York’s standout Americana and rock bands in recent years. They have returned with a third release, Cat Out Of Hell, self-produced and mixed by D. James Goodwin, whose credits include Goose, Kevin Morby, and The Hold Steady. The record heightens their mix of polish and unpredictability, bottling the spark of their live show into a house-party atmosphere populated by seekers, romantics, and barstool sages. Individually, the members bring résumés that span coverage in the New York Times and Tiny Desk appearances to festivals like Bonnaroo and Cayamo. NPR placed Anthony D’Amato in the lineage of Bruce Springsteen and Josh Ritter, Pitchfork praised Brian Dunne’s latest as wise and poetic with life-or-death urgency in every track, Paste singled out Don DiLego’s most recent record as a stunner, and Rolling Stone lauded Mike Montali’s band Hollis Brown as the soundtrack to a late-night drive through the American heartland. Together they operate like a four-headed songwriting unit, blending CSNY-level harmonies, the playful spirit of the Traveling Wilburys, and a touch of Eagles-style friction.

Participants meet by the monument on Parade Plaza, with walkers setting off ahead of the runners so everyone can reunite for the swim.
