Mosaic Workshop: Plate Picassiette

Give chipped and discarded china a second life in a creative mosaic workshop led by artist Brigitte Nicol-Messali. Working in the French picassiette tradition, participants transform vintage plates and ceramic fragments into a mosaic plate set on a bamboo base, with an emphasis on sustainable making, tactile surfaces, and the stories reclaimed pieces can tell. The session covers every stage of the craft. Prepare the base and map out a design, then learn to cut shards, arrange them for color, composition, and pattern, secure the pieces, apply grout, and finish the surface for a refined result. Each person leaves with a unique piece that is equally suited for use and display, perfect for the home or as a handmade gift. This class welcomes complete beginners as well as experienced makers. No prior art experience is necessary and all materials are included. Suitable for ages 10 and up. The fee is $85 per person. Creator Circle: Figure Drawing Open Studio

Figure drawing has shaped artists for generations, from Renaissance masters to John Singer Sargent. This weekly open studio at Vision Arts continues that lineage in a welcoming, contemporary setting. Artists work from a live model, strengthening their eye–hand connection and turning careful observation into expressive marks. The emphasis is steady growth through practice, presence, and process rather than flawless results. Sessions focus on the human form through gesture, anatomy, proportion, and structure, with close study of light, shadow, and form. Participants can pursue an approach that suits them, from realism to more interpretive styles, and benefit from poses held for set durations that build speed, confidence, and momentum in their practice. The atmosphere encourages a stronger, more instinctive connection between subject and artwork. Whether beginning, returning after time away, or refining long-standing skills, artists will find an encouraging community and a space to slow down and truly look. The cost is $15 per session.

Ghosts, Pirates and Historic Families Trolley Tour

This climate-controlled trolley tour offers a narrated, two-hour journey that travels roughly half an hour south from Myrtle Beach to Murrells Inlet, SC, and nearby communities. Participants hear cherished local ghost tales passed down through the years, with storytelling rather than on-the-spot hauntings, along with accounts of pirates who frequented these shores about three centuries ago and context about prominent families whose influence reached across the nation. It is designed as an introduction to notable sites along the route, not as an outing that spends extended time at attractions. Brief step-offs, only a few minutes each, are planned at The Gardener’s Cottage at Brookgreen Gardens, The Pawleys Island Hammock Shops Village, and a scenic overlook in Murrells Inlet suited for photos.

Thursdays K-Bar Farm Farmers Market at the Claire Chapin YMCA

Each Thursday, the Carolina Forest YMCA farmers market features K-Bar Farm with a rotating selection from its local, first-generation family operation. Shoppers can browse seasonal fruits and vegetables, house-made elderberry syrup crafted from fresh berries rather than dried, regeneratively raised beef and pork, local honey, small-batch jams and jellies, tangy pickled specialties, and naturally made home and wellness goods. The farm focuses on clean, wholesome food and a strong connection to the community. Admission is free and open to everyone, and YMCA membership is not required to shop. The market typically goes on rain or shine, with exceptions around holidays or during severe weather, and updates are shared on the farm shop’s page. After the market, the full lineup is also available at K-Bar Farm’s Homestead Junction. Please be cautious of online scams, since no one will request money through the event post. All transactions are in person at the YMCA market or at the farm’s shop.

Clay 101: Kids Clay - Mini Fairy House or Beach Hut

Get hands-on with clay while crafting a miniature fairy house or beach house. Participants will shape their own unique design using a range of tools and textures, and the class provides the clay, instruction, and bisque firing. Expect to get a bit messy, so wearing older art-friendly clothing is recommended, and aprons are available. Afterward, pieces will be fired and usually become ready to paint in about two to three weeks, with a text sent to the provided phone number when it is time to return and paint. Pottery and ceramics can be unpredictable during the making, drying, firing, and glazing stages, so finished results cannot be guaranteed. Refunds or credits are not offered for mishaps or outcomes that are less than ideal, and this unpredictability is a natural part of the ceramic process.

Vision Arts Academy Summer Art Academy (Introduction to Drawing & Painting)

Vision Arts Academy presents a week-long, hands-on introduction to drawing and painting designed for young artists to build confidence, creativity, and core skills. Using an approach inspired by traditional atelier training in a supportive setting, students work through daily projects that strengthen how they see and interpret the world. Through observation, imagination, and guided instruction, they explore shape, form, light, color, and composition while progressing from simple forms and perspective studies to completed still life drawings and a final painting. Learning themes include drawing basic shapes and forms, understanding space and perspective, using light and shadow to create volume, color theory and paint mixing, and still life work that encourages expressive, observation-based creativity. The final day features a gallery-style exhibit of student artwork along with a catered lunch for family and friends. The academy welcomes students ages 10 and up who enjoy art and creative exploration, want to improve their skills, are curious and expressive, and aim to grow confidence through the creative process. The program emphasizes encouragement, exploration, and process over perfection. Four sessions are offered during the summer, and participants may attend a single week or all four. The cost is $250 per week, with a discount available for those who enroll in the full series.
