Celebrate the start of summer with a nostalgic beachfront run full of 80s flair. The Awesome 80s Summer Solstice Beach Run presented by Moe Moon’s begins on the sand by Plyler Park, heads north for roughly half a mile, then turns back to finish on the beach. This is an untimed experience with no overall or age group awards, and a finish clock will be on display. After crossing the line, enjoy music, food, and a relaxed gathering at Plyler Park. Each participant receives a hot dog, chips, and a soda or water courtesy of Moe Moon’s. Costumes are encouraged, and anyone dressed in 80s attire will be entered into a special costume raffle. Bring a beach towel and settle in for a casual picnic as the sun sets along the Myrtle Beach shoreline. Course monitors will guide the way, and the start and finish remain on sand regardless of the tide. For safety and fairness, animals, baby joggers, strollers, skateboards, roller blades, bicycles, and any other wheeled devices are not permitted on the course and violations will result in disqualification. Registration is available online only. Packet pickup will be offered at Native Sons and at Plyler Park. Participants receive a bib, an event shirt while supplies last, and a finisher medal. The event supports Help 4 Kids/Backpack Buddies, which provides food for children in Horry County. Through observation, imagination, and guided instruction, they explore shape, form, light, color, and composition while progressing from simple forms and perspective studies to completed still life drawings and a final painting. Learning themes include drawing basic shapes and forms, understanding space and perspective, using light and shadow to create volume, color theory and paint mixing, and still life work that encourages expressive, observation-based creativity. The final day features a gallery-style exhibit of student artwork along with a catered lunch for family and friends. The academy welcomes students ages 10 and up who enjoy art and creative exploration, want to improve their skills, are curious and expressive, and aim to grow confidence through the creative process. The program emphasizes encouragement, exploration, and process over perfection. Four sessions are offered during the summer, and participants may attend a single week or all four. Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters
Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters bring a live show steeped in the spirit of 1960s rock and roll. Formed in 2006, the band has built a wide-ranging catalog that reflects a deep affection for the Beatles, the Byrds and the Beach Boys, while also drawing from the adventurous edge of The Mothers of Invention and the roots-driven sounds of The Allman Brothers, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Big Star. Years of touring have earned them a devoted cult following across the United States, Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom. In 2025 they opened for The Who on The Song Ends Tour in Sunrise, FL and Newark, NJ, and according to manager Bill Curbishly only three opening acts had ever received a standing ovation in The Who’s history, with The Boxmasters among them.

This performance marks their debut at Alabama Theatre.

The experience takes place in cool, air-conditioned comfort, with food trucks serving savory bites and sweet treats. Raffles, prizes, and playful surprises add to the festive atmosphere, while bright displays and distinctive finds create a colorful backdrop for exploring together.
