Pottery Wheel Class 4/23

Get hands-on with the pottery wheel in a beginner-friendly session taught by an instructor. Lessons are scheduled by appointment and kept small for one or two learners. You will watch a demonstration of throwing a bowl on the wheel, then create a piece of your own. No prior experience is required. Open to ages 12 and older. The cost is $55 and includes one finished piece per participant. After the first firing, you will receive a call to return and paint your work. It will be fired a second time, then ready for pickup about a week later. Advance online registration is required, and walk-ins are not accepted. The instructor will be available on the class day only if there are confirmed signups.

World Ballet Company: Swan Lake

World Ballet Company brings Swan Lake to Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, unfolding a story where fate and magic collide in a struggle between good and evil. A cast of 50 international dancers performs to Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score, showcased in more than 150 hand sewn costumes and framed by hand crafted sets. Signature moments include the Dance of the Little Swans and the Black Swan’s 32 fouettés. The performance runs about 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 20 minute intermission. For ages 5 and over. Based in Los Angeles and led by Sasha Gorskaya and Gulya Hartwick, World Ballet Company tours cherished ballets to cities nationwide. Converse Chorale: America at 250

Converse Chorale presents a program honoring the nation’s 250th year with music that reflects both celebration and reflection. The first half features beloved patriotic selections, including "The Star-Spangled Banner," "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor," and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." It also introduces "Nancy Hanks," a tribute to Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and "Heaven Is My Home," an original work by the ensemble’s accompanist, Lance Bastian, inspired by a Southern Harmony tune. The second half turns to voices and stories that have often been marginalized in American history, with pieces such as "Mother to Son," drawn from the poem by Langston Hughes, and "Rise Up" by Jake Runestad. The concert concludes with Z. Randall Stroope’s "Homeland," based on a melody by Gustav Holst with lyrics by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Shred Day

Better Business Bureau of the Upstate and AARP South Carolina are partnering to present a free Secure Your ID Shred Day, a national effort focused on identity theft and fraud prevention. Individuals and businesses can take advantage of complimentary on-site shredding for outdated documents and will receive educational handouts with practical tips for protecting information online and offline. With support from local partner PremierePC, free hard drive wipes that meet Department of Defense standards will also be available. Each consumer or business may bring up to three containers, either banker boxes measuring 10 by 12 by 15 inches or 13-gallon kitchen bags. Cardboard boxes will be emptied and returned. Do not bring desktop computers, monitors, laptops, printers, or external hard drives. To keep lines moving there is no need to remove binders, binder clips, paper clips, staples, rubber bands, or CDs and DVDs before shredding. For safety and efficiency, attendees on foot cannot be accommodated, and consumers must remain in their vehicles rather than watch materials being shredded. The free shredding service is first come, first serve and will continue only while the shred trucks have capacity.

Bloom Girls Summer Circle- Tween Girls

A therapist-led group created by Spartanburg’s Wellspring of Life Counseling invites tween girls to build social skills and confidence while exploring a lighthearted Christian friendship story. The book follows friends who start their own club and choose how to treat one another, blending a few playful rules with many meaningful ones centered on kindness, safety, honesty, and respect. Through guided discussion, creative activities, and real-life practice, participants learn to communicate clearly, set healthy boundaries, navigate peer conflict and friend drama, and reflect on values such as kindness, empathy, and integrity in an age-appropriate way. Faith-based themes are gently woven into conversation and reflection. The small group is led by a licensed therapist in a supportive, strengths-based setting where sharing is always optional. Enrollment is limited to seven participants and will run with at least four. The fee is $225 and includes the book, snacks, and activities.

Formed in the Carolinas in 2022, Private Violet blends indie pop with alternative rock, pairing intricate musicianship, vivid melodies, and engaging lyrics with energetic performances and strong vocals. Turn clay and carefully chosen materials into a wearable piece you design from start to finish in a small-group workshop led by Judy of Muddy Hands Pottery and Danielle Kaminski of Reinvintage Warehouse. Participants shape a ceramic pendant with guidance from Judy and select glazes that match their vision, then work with Danielle to assemble a custom chain that complements the finished pendant. The session is beginner friendly, so no prior pottery or jewelry experience is needed. Each person completes one necklace during the class, with the option to make additional necklaces for $52 each. The cost is $52 per participant and includes instruction from both artists, materials for one ceramic pendant, glaze selection, necklace chain components, and kiln firing. Because pendants must be fired, finished pieces will be available for pickup after the workshop. At Hearts Of Clay, the All Booked Up camp session celebrates reading through hands-on, book-themed art. Trae Crowder

Comedian and writer Trae Crowder first broke through in 2016 with his viral “Liberal Redneck” porch-rant videos. Since then, his work has included co-authoring the bestseller The Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin Dixie Outta The Dark, touring the country with the WellRED Comedy Tour, and appearing on Real Time with Bill Maher, Nightline, The View, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, NPR, WTF with Marc Maron, MTV, CNN, and the Veronica Mars reboot as Chattanooga Charlie. Originally from Celina, Tennessee and now based in Los Angeles, he has developed and sold scripted pilots for Warner Bros Television, ABC, and FOX. He produces sketches for Comedy Central, Funny or Die, ATTN, Facebook Watch, and the New York Daily News that have drawn tens of millions of views. Crowder also co-wrote and produced the documentary Inherent Good, featuring him and Andrew Yang in a look at universal basic income, and he co-hosts the WellRED, Evening Skews, and Puttin’ On Airs podcasts. His debut 30-minute stand-up special was filmed in Nashville in 2021, and he continues to share new rants with a large online audience.

Daddy Daughter Dance Enchanted Forest

Experience the Enchanted Forest theme at the Daddy Daughter Dance at Spartanburg Fairgrounds. Enjoy refreshments and capture memories at a photo booth, try for top honors in the best dancer and best dressed contests, and each girl will receive a complimentary carnation. A raffle will also be part of the festivities.

Me and My Pet Summer Camp

Animal-loving kids can dive into a creative camp designed for ages 4 to 8. Participants start by stuffing a plush cat or dog to make a new companion, then enjoy pet-themed projects throughout the week. They will design a custom shirt for their pet, craft a collar and accessories like a blanket and treats, build and decorate a cozy dog or cat house, and illustrate a storybook about their adventures to take home. Each day includes guided art activities, imaginative play, and a snack. All supplies are included.

Strong Families Event

The Strong Families Event takes place at C.C. Woodson Community Center. It centers on the message that strong families help build stronger communities.

Aquatic Art Adventures

This ocean-inspired camp session at Hearts Of Clay invites young artists to explore resin, clay, and glass while creating a series of sea-themed pieces. Projects include a fused glass dolphin plaque, a box with a shark fin design, and a glow in the dark octopus, along with additional creations. Throughout the week, campers complete five to six projects using materials such as clay, canvas, pottery painting, and fused glass. A Hearts Of Clay camp T-shirt is included, and snacks and drinks are provided each day. The weekly fee is $165 per camper, with a $25 nonrefundable deposit and a $140 balance due on the first day.
