Introduction to Watercolor Painting

Led by Julie, this beginner-friendly watercolor class opens with creating a personal color wheel using a newly provided paint set, giving students a useful reference for how each pigment looks on paper and a base for discussing color theory and color mixing. Participants then explore how water carries pigment by completing a pair of small studies that practice wet into wet and wet into dry techniques. These exercises bring out blooms, texture, and flowing movement that are distinctive to watercolor, resulting in colorful and spontaneous pieces. The class lasts two hours and is recommended for participants 13 years and older. Additional classes will follow, and once the introductory kit is obtained, future sessions are offered at a lower cost. Multiple session options are available.

Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer's

A film and discussion program explores practical ways to support brain health and understand dementia. The documentary Alzheimer’s: What You Can Do draws on current research and expert perspectives to question common beliefs and show how daily habits, early recognition, and proactive care may help lower risk. After the screening, Dr. Stephen Manlove, a Rapid City psychiatrist, leads a presentation and conversation on early signs, treatment approaches, and strategies that assist individuals and families facing cognitive decline. The program welcomes caregivers, people concerned about memory changes, and anyone seeking clear, useful information. It aims to share practical guidance, build understanding, and encourage open community conversation about a condition that touches many lives. This program is presented in conjunction with Take Me To Your Moon: Journeys into the World of Dementia, an exhibition by Yoko “Tenyoh” Sugawara on view in the Ruth Brennan Gallery and sponsored by Jackalope. Inspired by the idea of dementia as a journey from Earth to the moon, from the familiar to the unknown, the artwork reflects the emotional and psychological terrain of memory loss, with the moon’s textured surface echoing how Alzheimer’s can affect the brain.

In Conversation with Tom Lin

An evening conversation with Tom Lin, author of Babylon, South Dakota, takes place at Henry’s Books. The discussion centers on his genre-blending novel, which has drawn enthusiastic praise from writers Kaveh Akbar and Paige Lewis. Tickets are $40 and include a copy of the book, and seating is limited. Babylon, South Dakota follows Saul Keng Hsiu and his wife, Mei Lee, who leave China for the United States to claim a 160 acre homestead left to them by a distant relative. Starting with little more than what they can carry, including hidden gold and chrysanthemum seeds, they endure a difficult beginning and a brutal winter before building a life with thriving flowers, livestock, and their daughter, Mara. When the US Army Corps of Engineers purchases a portion of the farm to construct a missile silo, the ordinary begins to shift. Mara communicates with animals, Mei discovers a gift for augury, and the chrysanthemums seem to resist all harm. As the project’s purpose comes into focus, aimed at strengthening the nation’s nuclear deterrent, the family witnesses the reach of power and empire firsthand. Across years and generations marked by the silo’s presence, the Hsius encounter moments both wondrous and devastating. The novel spans an epic scope, celebrating a deep bond with the natural world while reframing the immigrant story as a distinctly American saga. It reflects on how choices echo through time and considers what people owe one another. Tom Lin was born in China and moved to the United States at the age of four. He graduated from Pomona College and earned a PhD from the University of California, Davis. His debut, The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu, received the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence. He teaches English and creative writing at the University of Iowa.

Yoga Camp 2026 in the Black Hills

Now in its fourth summer, this retreat at Camp Bob Marshall offers a chance to reconnect with body, breath, community, and the land in the Black Hills. Set along the shores of Bismarck Lake near Custer, SD, the rustic setting features pine forest, clear water, and star-filled skies. Across four days and three nights, the experience includes morning and evening yoga with Joy Collective teachers, workshops in movement, breathwork, sound, and creative expression, and whole-food meals prepared by Sandrine Pilaz of Nourish Collective. Lodging is available in cozy cabins built during the Civilian Conservation Corps era, or participants can bring their own tent. Guests have access to kayaks, canoes, and Black Hills National Forest trails, with spacious afternoons for rest, play, reflection, and adventure. The 17-acre camp, built in the 1930s, offers bunkhouse cabins, a central dining hall, and direct access to the lake, creating a simple and soulfully rooted home for the weekend. The rhythm typically begins with a warm welcome, then centers on morning yoga, open afternoons for exploration, evening gatherings, and a closing brunch and class. Guides include Sarah Lindemulder, Jenn Fast, Sandrine Pilaz, Maren Ernst, Madison Ferguson, and Margeret Moxnes, bringing leadership in yoga, healing foods, forest bathing, and somatic integration. Open to all bodies and all levels. All meals, lodging, and programming are included, and space is intentionally limited. The focus is a return to the body, to each other, and to the wildness within and around.

"Cinderella"

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Enchanted Version of Cinderella takes the stage, produced under arrangement with Concord Theatricals. With Richard Rodgers’ melodies and Oscar Hammerstein II’s book and lyrics, the production features favorite songs such as In My Own Little Corner and Impossible. The story begins when a royal ball is proclaimed to help Prince Christopher choose a bride. Cinderella stays behind to ready her stepmother and two stepsisters, but her Fairy Godmother appears and sends her to the palace in magical style. As midnight approaches she departs in a rush, leaving a slipper that launches the Prince’s search, though he nearly fails to recognize her when she reappears in cinders. This staging hints at a fresh take on how the story resolves. Performances take place at the Sturgis Community Center Theater. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students, payable with cash or check at the door.

More Than Gold

Created by Lead residents Terrence Smith and Todd Jones to honor Lead’s 150th anniversary, More Than Gold is a music-filled stage work that traces the community’s story from early prospecting to the era of underground research. Woven across generations, its scenes follow the rise of the Homestake Mining Company, the daily realities of workers and families, and the making of a town known for perseverance. The narrative touches on labor battles, the push for suffrage, the impacts of war and epidemic, and the shutdown of the mine, returning to a central question about identity when the industry that once defined a place is no longer there. An ensemble takes on multiple roles while live music created in Lead over the past 150 years supports lyrical storytelling. As mining yields to scientific discovery beneath the surface, the production looks ahead, focusing on what a community builds above ground and what continues to endure through change.

Celebrating its 40th year, this fundraising event for Northern Hills CASA features a scenic half marathon through Spearfish Canyon and a 5K centered around Spearfish City Park. The half marathon follows Highway 14A from Savoy along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway to the park, with views of limestone cliffs, coniferous and deciduous trees, and the waterway of Spearfish Creek. Wisdom, Innovation, Networking - Spearfish

A breakfast-format edition of the Wisdom, Innovation, Networking event at The Joy Center features conversation, connections, and a featured talk centered on learning to regulate before reacting. Laura Snyder, a Licensed Professional Counselor-MH and owner of Laura Snyder Therapy, shares a practical approach to understanding how nervous system patterns shape focus, communication, decision-making, and leadership. Rather than meeting in a single lot all season, the series travels to different communities and coffee spots, keeping the scenery fresh and drawing out unique vehicles that might otherwise stay tucked away. These meetups are family friendly, welcoming every make, model, and age, with variety at the heart of the experience. Only events bearing the Cars and Coffee Black Hills or CNCBH name are organized by the official team.
