Murder at the Summer Solstice Soiree Interactive Mystery Dinner

Candlelit gardens, floral cocktails, live music, fortune readings, and quiet whispers under lantern light set the scene for an exclusive Summer Solstice soirée hosted by Lady Seraphina Vale, a wealthy and eccentric hostess. As glasses lift for a midnight toast, a scream splits the warm night, the lights falter, and a guest collapses beside the solstice bonfire. The estate gardens are sealed and truths begin to surface as rivalries, secret affairs, missing fortunes, blackmail, jealousy, and old betrayals come to light, leaving nearly everyone with a motive. During a fast-paced interactive dinner, participants question suspects, uncover hidden clues, swap rumors, strike alliances, and make bold accusations in a mystery where trust is scarce. Motives may point to greed, revenge, love, or something darker tied to an ancient solstice custom. By the final course, the room weighs the evidence and names the culprit before sunrise. The experience includes a four course meal, drinks, and complimentary time in the kitty cove. Food allergies and sensitivities can be accommodated. Dressing up is encouraged but not required. This elevated evening is intended for adults and mature teens, and only ticketed guests will be admitted. Friendly guidance is provided so everyone can jump into the investigation with confidence.

“Cinderella”

Enjoy a showing of Cinderella with music by Richard Rodgers and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. This is an enchanted version of the well-loved story. The fairytale begins with the decision to give a ball to find a bride for Prince Christopher. Cinderella is tasked with making her stepmother and her two stepsisters beautiful for the ball. Although she can’t go, Cinderella remains happy and sings the song “In My Own Little Corner”. The Queen and King argue about the purpose of the ball, but the preparations continue. Cinderella is left alone until her Fairy Godmother appears and transforms her for the ball, making the impossible become possible. The ball is the ball that everyone remembers from their storybooks, and soon Cinderella must flee at midnight leaving her slipper for the Prince to find. The Prince sets out to find his love, but hardly recognizes Cinderella in her sooty clothes and dirty face. She is embarrassed and tries to leave. Will this version end differently? More Than Gold

Created by Lead residents Terrence Smith and Todd Jones to honor Lead’s 150th anniversary, More Than Gold is a music-filled stage work that traces the community’s story from early prospecting to the era of underground research. Woven across generations, its scenes follow the rise of the Homestake Mining Company, the daily realities of workers and families, and the making of a town known for perseverance. The narrative touches on labor battles, the push for suffrage, the impacts of war and epidemic, and the shutdown of the mine, returning to a central question about identity when the industry that once defined a place is no longer there. An ensemble takes on multiple roles while live music created in Lead over the past 150 years supports lyrical storytelling. As mining yields to scientific discovery beneath the surface, the production looks ahead, focusing on what a community builds above ground and what continues to endure through change.

Uncovering the Thoen Stone with Paul Higbee

Paul Higbee leads an exploration of the Thoen Stone, a sandstone slab said to have been uncovered by brothers Louis and Ivan Thoen near the base of Lookout Mountain in 1887. Its carved message, presented as the voice of one of seven gold seekers in the Black Hills in 1833, quickly stirred debate in Spearfish... some called it a hoax, while others defended its authenticity, including Frank Thomson, a rancher and writer who spent years studying it. The inscription describes a gold party operating decades before the region’s deposits were officially recognized and says they were discovered and hunted by Native people. Higbee will consider the evidence from every angle and revisit the questions that have kept this historical mystery alive.

Northern Hills CASA Presents the 40th Annual Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon & 5K

Celebrating its 40th year, this fundraising event for Northern Hills CASA features a scenic half marathon through Spearfish Canyon and a 5K centered around Spearfish City Park. The half marathon follows Highway 14A from Savoy along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway to the park, with views of limestone cliffs, coniferous and deciduous trees, and the waterway of Spearfish Creek. Every half marathon participant receives a medal, and the route is USATF certified (SD16003BK). Runners must stay on the left side of the road to avoid disqualification, and the time limit is three hours and twenty minutes. No one is left on the course. The 5K starts and finishes in the park, weaving through the campground, connecting to the bike path to the canyon parking lot, then returning via the scenic byway to rejoin the path and finish in the park. For both distances, age group awards go to the top male and female in Under 12, 12 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 plus, with additional medals for the top three overall male and female finishers. As this is a benefit for a non profit organization, refunds are not issued.

South Dakota Kids Belong - Kids Belong Ride 2026

Pedal for a purpose at a community ride that benefits South Dakota Kids Belong, a community funded nonprofit working to ensure every child in foster care has a family and every foster household has strong community support. Proceeds expand services across the state, build real community connections for foster families, and help waiting children move toward permanent homes. The Little White Church in Hill City serves as the hub for check in and the start and finish. Breakfast items like donuts, coffee, and juice are available at check in, and riders choose the route that suits them. Free shuttles carry participants and their bikes between the church and the trailheads throughout the event, with clearly marked pickup points on the event map. The venue is two blocks from the Michelson Trailhead. Registration is 25 dollars per person and includes breakfast, shuttle transportation, a trail day pass, an event shirt, opportunities to connect with sponsors and partners, and an evening celebration with food, music, and prizes. Foster and adoptive families participate at no cost, and sponsorships can cover registration for other riders. Early registration is recommended for shuttle coordination and to secure an event shirt. Everyone is welcome, all ages and skill levels. Families, individuals, and groups can take part, choosing a route that matches their comfort level. After the ride, a free family friendly celebration features live music, refreshments, community connection, giveaways, and sponsor engagement. There is time to explore Hill City before returning for the celebration. Routes are designed to be simple to moderate so participants can pick what fits best. Options include a downhill ride of about 10 miles from the Dumont Trailhead to Rochford, roughly 17.9 miles downhill from Dumont to Mystic, 32.5 miles from Dumont to Hill City, a 43 mile option from Dumont to the Mountain Trailhead near Crazy Horse, and a shorter 7.9 mile downhill ride from Rochford to Mystic. An event map is provided upon registration. The George S. Michelson Trail winds through the Black Hills for 109 miles on crushed limestone, crossing more than 100 bridges and four tunnels while showcasing landscapes from prairie to forest and linking towns such as Deadwood, Hill City, and Custer. Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a helmet and bike safety gear, and any necessary medications. Those traveling from out of town may want to arrange lodging early in Hill City or the surrounding Black Hills, with recommendations available upon registration. Additional ways to support the cause include sponsoring a rider or foster family, volunteering, or contributing prizes or supplies. Each contribution strengthens community support for foster and adoptive families and helps children in care move closer to belonging.

2026 Black Hills Super 6 Mountain Bike Race & Trail Run

Ride or run through the Black Hills National Forest while supporting Northern Hills Area CASA, a nonprofit that safeguards the interests of abused and neglected children through trained volunteer advocacy. This is a fundraising event and refunds are not offered. Mountain bike racers tackle looped courses of roughly 3 and 6 miles on a mix of singletrack and doubletrack. The three hour format welcomes beginner to intermediate riders, while the six hour challenge is geared toward advanced athletes. The goal is to complete as many laps as possible within the chosen time, either solo or with a team. The start and finish are set in the meadow by the warming hut at the Big Hill Trailhead, Trail #72. The 6 mile bike loop leaves the meadow, descends Twin Bridges in a clockwise direction for about 1.5 miles, then keeps right to climb a double track for roughly a mile to a ridge that connects to C Loop, drops to A Loop, and returns to the meadow. The trail run mirrors the bike format with three or six hour options on a 3 mile loop, and participants can compete individually or on a team. Divisions include individual male and female, junior 16 and under solo, and male, female, mixed, and 16 and under team categories. Teams are limited to two people in the three hour races and four people in the six hour races. Team captains set up the team name and invite teammates by email through a link. Separate aid stations for bikers and runners are located at the start and finish area, and lunch is provided for all participants. Preferred meadow parking spots are available for a $60 donation to NHCASA, with limited space. A small selection of men’s T shirts and women’s racerback tanks may be available at packet pickup and during the event. Cash prizes of $500 each, provided by race coordinators Jon and Diana Reth, may be awarded to male and female riders who break the six hour bike course records. The current holders are Nate Keck with 12 laps and Erin Kelly with 9 laps. A Forest Service permit is approved. Personal tents are welcome, and overnight camping is allowed in the Big Hill parking lot, but campfires are not permitted. Last year’s edition drew 149 bike racers and 21 trail runners, creating a lively, energetic day on the trails.
