This guided, off-trail loop leads to the iconic Heart Rock, beginning at the Ron Coleman Trailhead in McKelligon Canyon. There is no shade, desert life is abundant, and careful footing is needed throughout. The experience includes visits to two caves and wide views of El Paso, with plenty of chances for photos. Bring 2 to 3 liters of water, closed-toe hiking shoes or trail runners with excellent grip, a hat for sun protection, snacks, any personal medications, and electrolytes. Hiking poles and long sleeves are helpful. Proper footwear is required, and this is an advanced hike that is short yet demanding.
