Black Girls Don't Cry centers on a Black teen at a predominantly white high school whose run for prom queen spirals into a life or death struggle. Readers of Jumata Emill's The Black Queen and Tiffany D. Jackson's The Weight of Blood will recognize the blend of high school politics and mounting peril. Ida and JJ, the vice president and president of their Black Student Union who once looked like a legendary duo, are now on uneasy ground after JJ begins a new relationship and a sexist hot list circulates that rates girls and features only white students. The BSU pushes back by putting forward a prom queen candidate, setting Ida and JJ's new girlfriend on opposing sides. With the sharp, savvy Amayah guiding Ida's campaign, a connection grows even as tensions rise. As the competition intensifies, candidates begin to fall away, some bowing out and others losing their lives. The question becomes who will make it to prom. Alex Travis previously worked in autism research for three years and is pursuing a PhD in School Psychology at the University of Maryland. As a Black woman, she aims to add to the growing body of YA fiction about Black teenagers. She lives in Virginia.

BRRC Mission: Right To Arm Bears
Behind Black Hoof Brewing in Leesburg, teams take on an all day rucking challenge built around a points-based mission set. A unit of participants will choose from a menu of missions of different difficulty, completing them together or in smaller groups to earn enough points to finish the operation. Expect a mix of workouts, coupon carries, and timed rucks, with the group deciding which tasks make the most sense based on abilities and the score still needed. The format is designed to run for the full day. Late arrivals or early departures can be accommodated, though not going the distance will be recorded as a DNF on your patch. A tier system keeps the effort scalable for everyone, defined by ruck weight from Tier 1 at 45 pounds, then 30, 20, and 10, down to Tier 5 with only water. Bring a blank Velcro patch and mark it with a Roman numeral or tally for the tier you are attempting. If the load proves too heavy you may move to a higher numbered tier to reduce intensity, but once you go up you cannot move back down. At the end, the bottom right of the patch will indicate the tier you finished. Plan for a GORUCK Basic Challenge style loadout plus the weight for your chosen tier, and consider bringing extra plates if you might change tiers. If you have a sandbag, keep it in your vehicle and let Greg know at the start. The cost is under twenty dollars, with a goal of raising two hundred dollars to cover patches and other supplies. With strong participation the price will decrease, and anyone who already paid twenty dollars will receive an automatic refund. Set in historic Leesburg, there are plenty of options nearby for food and drinks after the ruck.
