The School of Essential Ingredients: A Celebration of Food & Community

Field Arts & Events Hall hosts a literary dining experience at the Sunset Bar & Lounge featuring New York Times bestselling author Erica Bauermeister. Selections from her novel The School of Essential Ingredients are read live, and each passage is paired with a themed course and Marrowstone Vineyards wine. Attendees move between the reading area and the dining space throughout the evening, creating natural moments to connect with fellow book lovers. The four-course menu draws directly from the world of the novel. It opens with a pea shoot salad with red beets and sweet onions in vinaigrette, finished with Manchego and toasted pine nuts, poured with Marrowstone Vineyards 2025 Grenache Blanc. A garden risotto cooked with Dungeness crab stock, asparagus, butter, olive oil, white wine, and Parmigiano Reggiano follows, topped with roasted Dungeness crab and paired with the 2023 Sangiovese. Next comes house-made pappardelle tossed in Tom’s tomato sauce of tomatoes, olive oil, fresh garlic, red wine, Italian sausage, Parmigiano Reggiano, and a touch of cream, matched with the 2025 Albariño. The finale is Carl’s white cake layered with strawberry mousse alongside the 2024 Mourvèdre rosé. The School of Essential Ingredients traces eight people who gather for cooking classes at Lillian’s Restaurant, each seeking something more than recipes. Among them are Claire, a young mother balancing family demands, Antonia, an Italian kitchen designer adapting to a new country, and Tom, a widower processing loss. Guided by Chef Lillian, lessons in flavor and technique ripple into their lives, from a white-on-white cake that stirs tender memories to an heirloom tomato sauce that both ignites and complicates romance. Erica Bauermeister is the bestselling author of five novels, including The School of Essential Ingredients, The Scent Keeper, and No Two Persons, as well as the memoir House Lessons: Renovating a Life. She holds a PhD in literature from the University of Washington and has taught there and at Antioch, with a love of food and cooking shaped by two years in northern Italy. Marrowstone Vineyards is a family-owned, locally cherished boutique winery. Tickets are $115 for members and $140 for general admission. Card purchases through the Ludus platform include a 5 percent service fee. To avoid the fee, pay by cash or check at the box office. Dungeons & Dragons Weekly Thursday Session 2

At Anime Kat, a weekly store-run Dungeons and Dragons campaign uses Fifth Edition rules. Seating depends on what the DM can comfortably manage, and new players can start when spots are available. The adventure unfolds in a custom setting designed for cooperative storytelling, mixing open exploration with labyrinth challenges that carry an emerald motif, plus anime influences like magical‑girl elements and performer‑focused mechanics. Tones range from bright to more intense, with a strong focus on character-driven plots, memorable roleplay, and stories that build over time. Two independent Thursday tables take place in the same world. Their parallel arcs are planned to meet in a shared finale, and anyone attending both tables is effectively playing in two separate campaigns. Before a first visit, confirm the appropriate character level. A $5 fee applies to each player at the table. DMs and GMs do not pay a fee. From each player fee, $3 returns as store credit that can be used on products, excluding events. The DM or GM receives $2 in store credit per registered player, also valid on products only. Each session is led by a single DM or GM. Scheduling updates, availability, and announcements are shared through the community Discord, and the store can provide additional details.

Dungeons & Dragons Weekly Thursday Session 1

Anime Kat hosts a store-organized Dungeons & Dragons group that uses the 5th Edition rules. The campaign takes place in a homebrew world shaped by collaborative storytelling, combining exploration and an “emerald maze” style of adventure with anime-inspired touches such as magical girl aesthetics, bard-like mechanics, and a mix of light and darker tones. The focus is on character-driven narratives, memorable roleplay, and long-term story development. The group meets weekly with two separate sessions, each operating as its own independent table. Both tables exist within the same world and follow parallel storylines that are intended to merge toward a shared endgame. Participating in both sessions means playing in two different campaigns. Space is limited to what a single Dungeon Master can manage, and only one DM or GM leads each table. Players can join at any time, and should confirm what character level to bring before their first session. There is a $5 table fee per player, while DMs and GMs participate for free. Each paying player receives $3 in store credit redeemable on products, not events, and DMs or GMs receive $2 in store credit per registered player, also redeemable on products, not events. Schoenberg’s Society: Reimagined

Violinist Erin Hennessey and pianist Gabriel Merrill-Steskal recreate the spirit of Arnold Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances, evoking the intimate, forward-looking atmosphere of early 1920s Vienna where contemporary music could flourish outside the gaze of conservative concert halls and critics. The program includes staples associated with that circle by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, alongside Bela Bartok’s Second Rhapsody for Violin and Piano. It also shines a light on Mary Dickenson-Auner, a violinist and composer who performed in the Society’s concerts yet received limited recognition at the time. Her Irish Melody for Violin and Piano, long unheard since the early 20th century, receives its American premiere. Hennessey appears regularly as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, with work that includes collaborations with leading Irish ensembles. She became Artistic Director of the Olympic Strings Workshop in 2024 and is a PhD researcher at the Royal Academy of Music focusing on the chamber music of Mary Dickenson-Auner, with studies at Oberlin Conservatory, Whitman College, and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where she taught until 2023. Merrill-Steskal is a multifaceted pianist and scholar whose recent projects range from commissioning new works for fortepiano to preparing and recording a critical edition of a Josepha Auernhammer violin sonata on period instruments, and he has appeared as a soloist with the Ann Arbor Symphony in Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto. He has earned awards in international competitions, held fellowships at major festivals, and recorded for Blue Griffin Records for an upcoming release of new piano music by William Horne. Presented by Field Hall. Tickets are priced at $28 to $38 for adults and $15 for youth up to age 18. Card purchases through the Ludus platform include a 5 percent service fee, which can be avoided by paying with cash or check at the box office.
