Aging Well Community Summit

At Tacoma Public Library (Main Branch), this community summit invites Pierce County residents to help shape the 2027-2030 Area Plan for Aging and Disability Resources. Through facilitator-led, interactive conversations, participants will explore what supports aging in place, how the county could strengthen resources that help people age well, and new ideas that promote healthy aging and a more livable Pierce County for everyone. Input gathered at this session will guide services and priorities for older adults and people with disabilities over the next four years. Registration is required. Community members can also contribute by completing the Area Plan survey. For help with registration or the survey, call 253-798-4600.

2026 Tacoma Sprint Thaw Co-Ed Novice Tournament

Set at Tacoma Twin Rinks, this co-ed novice ice hockey tournament welcomes beginner adult teams in the Copper skill level. Participants must be registered with USA Hockey and carry a valid membership number. Teams are built around newer adult players, often with one to five years of experience, similar to traditional D-level leagues and learn-to-play programs. Players with any junior experience or higher are not eligible to compete at Bronze level or below. Four games are guaranteed for every team, and the top two advance to a championship matchup. Gameplay follows USA Hockey rules with no checking. One female skater must be on the ice at all times other than the goalie, and a female player cannot serve a teammate’s penalty; a minor will be assessed if this requirement is not met. Qualifying games award two points for a win, and ties in the standings are resolved in order by head-to-head results, total goals scored by female players, goals against, penalty minutes, the earliest first-game goal, and if needed a coin toss. Each team may use one timeout per game. Tied qualifying games go to a 3-on-3 shootout that includes at least one female among the first three shooters. If still tied, teams proceed with alternating single shooters, with no repeats until every skater on the smaller bench and all eligible female players have taken a turn. In the championship round, teams first skate 3-on-3 overtime, then move to a five-shooter format if needed, followed by single rounds under the same no-repeat and female-eligibility rules. Any player in the penalty box at the end of regulation or overtime is not eligible to participate in a shootout. Officials will direct teams onto the ice for the start of each game and each period, remain on the ice until players have returned to their dressing rooms, and may assess penalties during warmups. Initial team rosters with player names and USA Hockey numbers must be submitted for verification, and eligibility may be confirmed through public databases. Final rosters are capped at 18 skaters and 3 goalies, and any changes require approval from the tournament committee. Player substitutions are generally not permitted unless an exception is approved in advance by the committee and the opposing team. To be eligible for the championship round, each player must appear in at least two qualifying games. A player who receives four penalties in a game will be removed from that game without a misconduct. Teams that forfeit are not eligible for the championship, and players currently suspended by USA Hockey may not participate. Facility and conduct guidelines apply. Do not bring glass bottles into the locker rooms, and alcohol is not allowed on the bench. The rules also outline Bronze division details for reference, noting that those rosters typically feature novice to intermediate players, slapshots are permitted, and the Gretzky cap limits any player to three goals per game, with additional goals disallowed and subject to escalating penalties.

Her practice blends playful and heartfelt tones, created with everyday materials like paint, clay, fiber, paper, pen, and found materials. She recently designed her own alphabet and is working on a series of banners that apply this typeface to spell uplifting messages.
