The Talbott Brothers

The Talbott Brothers deliver an all-ages performance built on heartfelt songwriting, close-knit harmonies, and spirited energy. Brothers Nick and Ty grew up in Imperial, Nebraska near the Colorado and Kansas borders, started writing songs as kids after finding their dad’s guitar, and drew on rock, blues, and country influences that still shape their sound. After forming their band in the Pacific Northwest, they toured widely and earned a reputation for emotion-fueled, lively shows. Outlets including Rolling Stone, Billboard, and The Boot have noted their sweeping, movie-like vibe and distinctive sibling blend, and listeners who enjoy John Mayer, Mumford & Sons, or Jason Isbell often connect with their music. Holler praises their latest album for its raw, uncompromising character.

This first Friday collection focuses on clothing and small household goods in partnership with Goodwill: Olympics & Rainier Region. It is part of Beyond the Bin, a free series of community reuse events that helps keep usable items in circulation. This class welcomes first-time boat builders and requires no prior experience. Participants learn essential skills such as precise measuring, steam-bending wood, clamping, and laminating, and they practice using tools including hand saws, drills, and routers. Teams may include two to five people and must have at least two adults, and youth ages 12 and older are welcome. Space is limited, so advance registration is required and walk-ups are not permitted. Pricing is per family or team, with one boat per team, and is offered in three tiers. The community supported option is $300, the standard option is $600, and the community sponsor option is $900. Leah Justine live at The Sand Bar and Grill

Leah Justine brings her independent country sound to The Sand Bar and Grill with commanding vocals, heartfelt storytelling, and a magnetic stage presence. Named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Northwest Country Music Association, the Pacific Northwest native draws on a 15-year career with the Department of Defense as a licensed Professional Engineer and certified Project Management Professional, turning a life change into songs about courage, faith, and beginning again. Raised in Tacoma and shaped by early experiences in Disney sing-alongs, musical theater, and pageants, she later recorded her debut album in Nashville with multi-platinum producer Kenny Royster. Her performances blend grit and grace with precise vocal control, featuring originals that resonate with military families, women finding their voice, and anyone ready for a fresh chapter. She has shared the stage with Rodney Atkins, James Otto, Love & Theft, Andy Griggs, and Alana Springsteen. Cosmic Kitten and more

McMenamins presents a stacked bill in the Spanish Ballroom at McMenamins Elks Temple featuring Cosmic Kitten, DOWNSIZE, and Klondike Kate. Cosmic Kitten channels a fusion of alternative, post-grunge, and punk, pairing fierce onstage intensity with introspective songwriting. The San Pedro quartet includes Karen Marie on guitar and vocals, Zach Huckabee on drums, Jay Vesper on bass, and John Chavez on rhythm guitar. Their catalog spans five full-length albums, with credits that include work with Ulysses Noriega, Pedro Mancillas, Steve Moriarty of The Gits, and mastering by Jack Endino. They have supported Redd Kross, The Dickies, Alice Bag, Avengers, and Mike Watt, and have toured both the United States and the United Kingdom on their own steam. Their self-titled release on Psyched! Records explores themes of existential conflict, emotional numbness, consequence, and transforming anger into strength, created in collaboration with Alex Edkins (METZ) and Ben Greenberg (Uniform) at Kingsize Soundlabs, mixed by Graham Walsh and mastered again by Jack Endino. Olympia’s DOWNSIZE brings a somber alt-rock sound touched by shoegaze. Jordan on vocals, Dylan on guitar, Logan on bass, and Levi on drums draw influence from Fleshwater, Momma, Chevelle, Smashing Pumpkins, and Sunny Day Real Estate. The project is rooted in cathartic, emotionally charged songwriting, and the band is currently recording its debut EP, Spiral. Hailing from Tacoma, Klondike Kate delivers raw Pacific Northwest punk with pounding drums, driving bass, jagged guitar, and a lively vocal trade-off. Drummer vocalist Kate Roxwell founded the band, bassist vocalist Brenda Davidson cemented the core, and guitarist Billy Idle added extra firepower while preserving the stripped-down edge. Their influences span Misfits, Minor Threat, The Runaways, and Sonic Youth. The PIG Records release 13.5 captures their brash mix of humor and intensity, with live favorites like Alien Invasion, Snot Rocket, Wonder Woman, and Tacoma Girls. Known for unpredictable, explosive sets across Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, Bend, and Portland, they have shared stages with MDC, Angry Samoans, D.I., Agent 86, and Potbelly.

Fury and Wonder

At Mason United Methodist Church, soprano Katia Hayati and pianist Jessica Hall present a recital exploring how awe, connection, and love can endure in the shadow of violence and loss. The program begins with Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs in an intimate version for voice and piano, where expansive lines and late harmonies set wonder beside mortality. Songs by Rebecca Clarke follow, blending musical intricacy with direct emotion to confront monsters both supernatural and human, curses and sorrow, while the warmth of human resilience shines through. The evening closes with Alan Louis Smith’s Letters from George to Evelyn, a cycle drawn from wartime correspondence that pairs tender declarations with vivid scenes from the front, made especially personal as Smith was Hall’s longtime teacher at the University of Southern California. Projected English translations and titles will accompany the performance, and a short reception will follow. Hayati is a Tacoma-based soprano and devoted recitalist with a focus on new music and underrepresented composers, known for a wide range of roles onstage and a background that bridges the arts and technology. Hall is an American pianist with extensive experience across opera companies as a coach, conductor’s assistant, and chorus master, and an active collaborator who has worked closely with distinguished artists and composers.

Winter Birding

Learn about local birds that live here year-round and some that spend fall and winter in the Puget Sound area, retreating from northern climates such as the Alaskan and Canadian tundras. Discuss ways to help winter birds and the importance of preserving habitats and resources needed to survive the cold and rainy season. This program supports the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program, Bewilderment by Richard Powers, and the Museum of Glass.
