Playmakers: Captain No Beard and the Stowaways

Little Theatre of Walla Walla presents a youth theatre production designed and led by its own creative community. Longtime director Carol Anselmo will be at the helm, supported by high school and college student directors Natalie Knudsen, Emily Armstrong, Austin Applebee, and Francisco Mendoza. Teaching artist Bronwyn Berna will also lend her expertise, creating a collaborative, multi-generational learning environment. This year’s production will be an original, pirate-themed show written by students from Walla Walla High School, offering young artists the opportunity to see their ideas move from page to stage. After four siblings follow their grandfather’s old treasure map, they find themselves as stowaways on a pirate ship. The stowaways travel around the ship, learning the way of the sea and meeting its inhabitants: the mice, the cooks, and the ship’s deck crew. All the while, the stowaways must hide from the evil captain no-beard. Their plans fail when the Captain’s pirate spies spot the stowaways and hatch a plan to expose them. Who will win when they come face to face? Who will rule the ship and how will they come to power? This performance is open to children in the first grade and up to age 15.

Special Event: Fluid Dynamics

International concert violinist Rachel Lee Priday makes her WWCMF debut with Fluid Dynamics, a program she created that connects music with ocean science. Inspired by the work of Dr. Georgy Manucharyan, Associate Professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington, she assembles a one hour program of contemporary pieces for violin and pairs them with visual effects drawn from his research, including imagery such as iridescent patterns formed by surface tension on submerged bubbles. Presented at Foundry Vineyards, the performance features music by living composers including Leilehua Lanzilotti, Timo Andres, Gabriella Smith, Cristina Spinei, Paul Wiancko, and Christopher Cerrone, with selections such as ko'u inoa, Three Suns, Entangled on a Rotating Planet, Convection Loops for Violin and Loop Pedal, to speak in a forgotten language, Waterworks, and a Sonata for Violin and Piano. Artists are Rachel Lee Priday, violin, and Xiaohui Yang, piano. Doors open an hour before the music begins. Special event price is $40.
