#24HOCS Not So Serious Stitchers Oct 2026 Retreat

Hyatt Place Madison / Verona, 846 Liberty Drive, Madison · verified Oct 11
    See details

A relaxed stitching retreat at Hyatt Place Madison / Verona offers plenty of time in a spacious meeting room to focus on projects and spend time with fellow stitchers. Registration is $50 for at least half of a six foot table, and the organizer will try to seat each person at their own table when possible, although sharing may be needed based on demand. The vibe is intentionally low key, with no vendors or formal classes, just good lighting, ample workspace, and a free table where attendees can drop off items they no longer need and pick up something new. Expect a full weekend centered on stitching, laughter, and trading quirky tips. The LCR game returns as a staple, so bring 7 skeins of floss to play, or 14 if planning to play twice. Payment is required to secure a spot. Attendees handle their own lodging. A group rate of $129 per night includes parking, Wi‑Fi, and breakfast. Guest rooms have refrigerators, while the stitching room does not. Food and beverages are on your own, with many nearby options for dining in or delivery, including places within walking distance. The restaurant bar also keeps a small selection of salads and wraps. Outlets are available for task lights and other gear, and extra extension cords and power strips will be on hand. Because room temperatures can vary, dressing in layers or bringing a hoodie or fan is recommended. A Free Table will be set up for any stitchy stash that needs a new home, and anything unclaimed goes back with its owner.

Willard Lecture presented by the Lumen Center. Drawing on his longstanding critique of scientism, he examines how knowledge and love of God can be understood in a scientific and technological age. The lecture calls the university community to reflect on the relationship between Christianity, science, and the current cultural landscape. It considers the Christian tradition’s layered view of knowing, with love at the summit, and why that vision has dimmed in a culture steeped in science. The talk also addresses the rising influence of artificial intelligence, often shaped by assumptions consistent with scientism, and asks what a faithful Christian response should be today. The Dallas A. Willard Lecture is generously supported by Fieldstead and Co.

Breath and Sound Synergy- A Somatic Connection

17 Applegate Ct, Madison · verified Oct 11
    See details

Settle into a restorative session that blends breathwork with therapeutic sound to create a somatic conversation within the body. Guided down-regulation breathing invites longer exhales that tell the nervous system it is safe to relax. As the body softens, heart rate eases and inner quiet grows. Layered sounds and vibrations move through the tissues, synchronizing with the breath to support the body’s innate capacity to balance and repair. Together these practices can activate the parasympathetic response, encourage coherence among breath, heartbeat, and brainwaves, and stimulate vagal pathways for a smoother return to calm. Tension held in muscles and fascia is gently loosened, while consistent cues of safety help shift out of fight, flight, or freeze and into integration. Each gathering is crafted to steady the system and restore harmony so you can explore deeper awareness without losing your sense of grounding. Many notice changes in how they feel, perceive, and respond, with greater connection to inner truth. Joanne “Jo” Adducci and Krista Pfohl lead this gentle journey in support of emotional, physical, and spiritual realignment.

11th Annual Halloween Tricks and Treats Scramble - NOW A 2 DAY EVENT!

Odana Hills Golf Course, 5618 Odana Rd, Madison · verified Oct 11
    See details

The 11th season of this Halloween golf scramble returns with a new two-day format and a four-player team setup. Teams can choose to play on one day or both, using standard scramble rules where everyone tees off, the best shot is selected, and the team continues from there until the ball is holed. The lowest overall score across the entire weekend earns a spot on the trophy, and payouts each day depend on how many teams are competing that day. There is a location update. An announcement highlights a move to Odana Hills, and it also notes that, because of construction at Odana Hills this fall, the 2026 edition will temporarily move to Yahara Hills, which will be styled with spooky challenges, a few treat holes, and playful twists, so surprises can pop up throughout the round. Entry includes 18 holes, a golf cart, a post-round meal, team and individual games, plenty of hole prizes, and multiple payouts for top finishers. Optional add-ons include a team skins game and a 50/50 raffle supporting American Family Children’s Hospital. Rounds typically run about five to five and a half hours, so patience is encouraged. Scorekeeping will be closely monitored, and any team found manipulating results will be disqualified.

Stoughton Opera House, 381 E Main St, Stoughton · verified Oct 11
    See details

Los Angeles big band Lizzy & the Triggermen pairs classic swing style with a contemporary spark, creating vintage-minded music that speaks to today. NPR has compared their sound to a mix of Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, and Amy Winehouse. Their concerts blend revitalized favorites and showtunes with driving original numbers that take on topics from fast fashion to fascism, channeling the spirit of the Prohibition era to transform tough themes into danceable, horn-fueled joy. The group has sold out storied venues such as the Troubadour and reached No. 3 on the iTunes jazz charts alongside artists like Miles Davis and Kamasi Washington. At the center is vocalist and bandleader Lizzy Shaps, whose operatic training powers a soaring, distinctive voice and sharp wit. Her songwriting has drawn comparisons from Janis Ian to Leonard Cohen, and her comedy writing for television on outlets including HBO, Amazon, Legendary, CBS, and the History Channel has earned multiple Emmy nominations. The band’s ranks span generations, with members who have performed with names ranging from Harry Connick Jr. to Benny Goodman. Their arranger served as lead trombonist and contributed arrangements for Goodman’s final orchestra. Their reach crosses scenes and styles, reflected in a tour with rock icons Squeeze that drew standing ovations and encores, selections for major festivals like the Tucson Jazz Festival and SXSW, and a shared headlining slot at Modernism Week with Samara Joy and Nancy Sinatra. Their performances have also attracted millions of views on social media.

SistaStrings brings the closeness of sisterhood to strings, with Chauntee and Monique Ross uniting violin and cello in a vivid blend of classical technique, soulful phrasing, and contemporary influences. Raised in Milwaukee in a musical family and now an active part of Nashville’s music community, they weave R&B, hip hop, and gospel into their foundation. They have performed with Metallica and Joni Mitchell at the Grammy Awards, joined Andrea Bocelli at the 2024 Oscars, and appeared with Elton John, Annie Lennox, Garth Brooks, and Charlie Puth at the 2024 Gershwin Honors. Their résumé includes stages like Madison Square Garden, The Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, and Saturday Night Live. Susan Werner brings a performance that highlights the breadth of her songwriting and musicianship. Recognized by the Chicago Tribune as one of today’s most innovative songwriters, she blends agile guitar work that began at age five with expressive piano playing and a voice refined through graduate study, and she has appeared as a guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz. Though grounded in the acoustic tradition of coffeehouses and folk festivals, her catalog reaches widely, from Gershwin and Cole Porter inspired tunes on I Can’t Be New (2004), to gospel on The Gospel Truth (2007), traditional Cuban son on An American in Havana (2016), and the rollicking spirit of New Orleans junk piano on NOLA (2019). She also wrote the music and lyrics for Bull Durham, The Musical in 2014. Her songs have been recorded by Tom Jones, Michael Feinstein, and Shemekia Copeland, and her most recent album of originals, The Birds of Florida, arrived in 2022.

A monthly, in-person grief wellness gathering for bereaved mothers is now being offered in the Madison area, hosted by Bereaved Together and facilitated by Michelle Kullmann. Created for those navigating miscarriage through adult child loss, it focuses on gentle, grief-informed movement rather than fitness, offering a space that feels grounding, supportive, and empowering in community. This month features a Yin Yoga experience at Harbor Wellness Studio. The practice invites slowing down with long-held, supported postures that help ease muscular tension and nourish the body. With the aid of blankets, bolsters, and blocks, participants are guided toward comfort, stillness, and quiet reflection, allowing time for rest, integration, and gentle renewal. Each registered attendee receives a Bereaved Together journal, light refreshments, a movement and wellness experience, connection with a community of fellow bereaved mothers, and a pampering care package to take home. Registration is required and space is intentionally limited to honor the atmosphere of the room. For those who attend, the registration fee can be refunded, rolled over to a future month, or donated back to Bereaved Together to help cover session costs and extend support to another grieving mom.
