German Beer Day 2026: Special Tapping at Bierock

Bierock marks German Beer Day with a special tapping centered on a style widely enjoyed in Germany. Bitburger Premium Pils from Rhineland-Palatinate makes its debut at the venue, highlighting a pilsner known for a dry, bitter profile and light color, a tradition that began in the Bohemian town of Pilsen and has long been brewed in Bitburg. The occasion also acknowledges the Reinheitsgebot, the centuries old German purity law that defines beer by simple ingredients of water, malt and hops, with yeast included. Pints can be paired with a bierock.

Interim Assassin

BlueStem Jazz presents Interim Assassin, a trio featuring Jeb Bishop, Daniel Burke, and Erik Sowa. Their performance moves between post-rock tinged jazz improvisation and sparse electronic ambience, treating the music as a conversation shaped by sustain, silence, space, texture, environment, and pattern, with harmony and dissonance both in play. Erik Sowa, a Chicago-based drummer and multi-instrumentalist, draws on free improvisation, jazz, ambient and noise, post rock, and afro-beat, and has collaborated with Peter Maunu, Norman Long, Ben Schmidt-Swartz, Mai Sugimoto, Thomas Comerford, and Snek Trio. In 2022 he released the instrumental collection Cedar Lake Recordings Vol. 1, which was reviewed in Dusted Magazine. Daniel Burke, on guitar, keys, synth, field recordings, and devices, is influenced by atonal modern classical music, Brian Eno’s ambient work, the free improvisation approach of AMM, and the industrial edge of Throbbing Gristle. Since the early 1980s he has created sound as Illusion of Safety and worked with Jim O’Rourke, Darin Gray, Jon Mueller, and Olivia Block, as well as with CHEER-ACCIDENT and Tertium Quid with Bill Horist and Dave Abramson. Jeb Bishop, on trombone and electronics, has been active in Chicago’s experimental scene since the 1990s across jazz, free improvisation, and post-rock, with credits that include The Flying Luttenbachers, Stereolab, Vandermark Five, Jim O’Rourke, Gastr del Sol, The Sea and Cake, and The Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet. The menu features four variations, including a signature salted and buttered pretzel paired with house pimento cheese, a jalapeño popper version finished with cheddar and a creamy jalapeño dip, a sweet option covered in peanut butter and chocolate with cream cheese frosting on the side, and a Bavarian herb pretzel served with Dusseldorf brown mustard. In addition, the Classic bierock gets a pretzel makeover, keeping its German-inspired filling of ground beef, sauerkraut, onion and seasonings with a mustard vinaigrette for dipping, and baking to a glossy, salted pretzel crust. The ensemble brings together three standout Madison musicians whose distinct voices blend into a sound that is both warm and lively, with rich harmonies, soulful improvising, and a driving groove that holds attention from the first notes. Pianist, vocalist, and bandleader Mac Earleywine-Fayas brings a blues-infused touch shaped by years of dedication and community involvement. He volunteers with Hanah Jon Taylor’s Cool School at Cafe Coda, serves on the Madison Jazz Society board, supports booking and marketing at the club, and was recently invited to guest conduct with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Still in high school, he is already building a path toward band directing and a professional life in music. Trumpeter Jan Hora is an educator and producer who also serves as CFO for Eternally Ours Entertainment. His performance credits include work on cruise ships and Broadway tours, and he now calls Stoughton home. He shares his expertise through private teaching and performs with precision, grace, and creativity. Bassist John Greene draws on many years across instruments and genres. After a long detour practicing law, he returned to jazz bass and is becoming an in-demand player on the local scene. The trio launches the music, then the jam opens up for spontaneous interplay, blending passion, groove, and quick ideas for music that feels fresh, soulful, and full of life.

"Daughter of the Light" film screening and discussion

A feature-length screening of "Daughter of the Light" is followed by a conversation with its filmmaker, Khashem Gyal. The program takes place on the main floor of Grainger Hall in Room 1175. The documentary runs 1 hour and 39 minutes. Released in theaters across China in 2024, it became the first Tibetan documentary to receive a nationwide theatrical run and was among the year’s most-watched nonfiction films, a landmark moment for Tibetan cinema. The story centers on 13-year-old Metok Karpo, who lives at a Tibetan boarding school for orphans although both parents are alive. Raised by her maternal grandparents, she sets out across her home grasslands to find her father after her mother’s remarriage is followed by the sudden death of her stepfather. Meeting her father and his new family stirs conflicting emotions that she channels through imaginative drawings. As smartphone dating trends spread, traditional nomadic values strain, and divorce increasingly affects families in Tibet. The film follows her search for her father and a place to belong amid rapid social change. Khashem Gyal is an award-winning writer, director, cinematographer, and producer from Tibet’s Amdo region, recipient of the Colors of Asia Award and a nominee for the Adeste Gold Medal recognizing global changemakers under 40. His work includes Valley of the Heroes, Daughters’ Courage, A Day in the Life of a Tibetan Pastoralist, Awang Jigmey: Walking Among the Peaks, The Guardians of the Three Rivers, A Green Trip, and this debut feature. "Daughter of the Light" was the first Tibetan international co-production and earned the Colors of Asia Award from a large pool of global pitches, the ATP Grand Prize for Excellence in Japan, the Audience Award at Korea’s EIDF, and the One Hundred Flowers Award at China’s Golden Rooster Film Festival, along with nominations at the Ulju Mountain Film Festival, the China Documentary Film Academy, and GZDOC. Gyal also uses film to help safeguard intangible cultural heritage and to promote environmental awareness. His short Huangnan Unveiled: A Tapestry of Living Heritage was recognized among the top 20 heritage shorts in China that year. This event is co-hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Center for East Asian Studies and the Center for South Asia, in partnership with the Wisconsin Tibetan Association and the Wisconsin Tibetan Language & Culture School.

Be the Good Fundraising Dinner

An uplifting fundraising dinner that brings people together around good food and shared purpose. Guests can enjoy a multicourse meal created and served by students in TEENworks, highlighting the creativity and effort they bring to events at the Goodman Community Center. Throughout the evening, teens, staff, and neighbors share stories of positive change in the community and the impact that support makes. TEENworks is Goodman’s signature program for high school students, offering paid, hands-on experience with culinary and hospitality professionals while building job readiness and skills that support long-term academic and career goals. The program’s young staff prepare and present every dish for this event. The program takes center stage as a TEENworks student co-hosts alongside GCC’s VP of philanthropy and community engagement, Noah Salata. The night also features the premiere of a new TEENworks program story by local videographer Nate Seward, produced in partnership with the teens. Four outstanding community partners are recognized with the inaugural Be the Good awards, and the celebration includes announcing the Friendly Food Drive competition winner, which supports Goodman’s food pantry. All proceeds benefit the Goodman Community Center, and a brief fundraiser with curated prize packages offers another way to contribute to the work happening every day. Together, the evening underscores how collective action can strengthen lives and build brighter futures.

READ(y) to Wear | 2026

At The Sylvee, this red carpet celebration combines a fashion show with a design competition to benefit Madison Reading Project. Built around an Out of This World theme, it highlights creations from design teams while raising support for free literacy resources and brand new books for kids, families, and educators. As the organization’s largest single day fundraiser, proceeds help increase access to books in homes, schools, and community organizations and nurture a love of reading throughout the year. Organizers are seeking sponsors and design teams. Last year, the event raised $150,000 for this mission.

Griffin House

American singer and songwriter Griffin House brings a storytelling focused, seated performance to The Bur Oak. For more than two decades he has toured widely and built a catalog of more than 13 albums. His debut, Lost and Found, drew national attention on CBS Sunday Morning when music critic Bill Flanagan, then a VP at MTV/VH1, highlighted him as a standout emerging songwriter. Years of grassroots touring, including opening stints for John Mellencamp and the Cranberries, helped cultivate a loyal following, and he later stepped into national headliner status with an appearance on Late Night with Craig Ferguson and the underground hit The Guy That Says Goodbye to You Is Out of His Mind. His journey is chronicled in the Amazon Prime documentary Rising Star, which explores life on the road alongside marriage, fatherhood, and sobriety. His music has appeared on television series including One Tree Hill, Rescue Me, Party of Five, and Everwood, and his work has earned coverage in outlets such as Paste, No Depression, and Rolling Stone. American Songwriter has praised his raw talent. His recent EP, The Tides, features five songs recorded with Grammy Award winning producer Jacquire King. Tickets are $25 in advance and $28 day of show. This is a seated event.
