The Folk SchoolBling Your Bookends!
Designed for ages 9 to 11, this Blue Zone workshop in the Active Learning Lab at the Noel Wien Library teaches decoupage and turns plain bookends into personalized shelf accents. Participants will decorate and take home a pair of bookends, and all supplies are included. Doors open shortly before the program begins. Unregistered participants may be admitted if space allows, and because the activity is taught step by step, late arrivals may lose the opportunity to participate. This program is for Summer Reading Program participants, and registration for that program is available at the Noel Wien Library, the North Pole Branch, or the Bookmobile.

Roots, Blooms & Community: Garden Harvest Paint Night Fundraiser
A garden harvest paint night fundraiser brings together Calypso Farm and Bread Line in support of Community Meals at Southside Community Farmers Market. Participants create a colorful, garden-inspired painting while helping provide free, healthy, locally sourced meals to the Fairbanks community. Tickets are $50 per person. The session includes step-by-step guided instruction, all supplies, and a stencil for easy tracing, making it beginner friendly and enjoyable for all skill levels. Community Meals are free weekly dinners at Southside Market that foster connection and fresh local food for the South Cushman neighborhood, and over 4,500 free meals were served last summer. Capacity is limited.

The June Music & More series at First United Methodist Church features the return of Val Kirchhoff and Ethan Leinwand in a program of barrelhouse blues for voice and piano. This St. Louis duo focuses on the early blues of the 1920s and 1930s, with a deep connection to the city’s piano traditions. They met online in 2014, Ethan moved from New York City to St. Louis, and they have performed together ever since. The pair married in the winter of 2023. They play frequently in their hometown and have toured widely across the United States and Europe, from Alaskan saloons and Mississippi riverboats to noted jazz clubs in Vienna. They have headlined blues and boogie-woogie festivals in Europe and are regulars on ragtime, blues, and early jazz circuits in the United States. Previous Music & More appearances in Fairbanks drew large and appreciative audiences.
Rocking around the Chatanika!
This beginner-friendly field meet focuses on rockhounding along the Chatanika. Waterproof footwear is required, and life vests are needed for young children. Expect to be outside of cell service. For anyone unfamiliar with the area, clear directions will be provided, and a simple caravan from town can be arranged. This is a very casual outing with snacks and water available, and participants are welcome to bring any extras they prefer. Feel free to pack rockhounding tools or simply carry a bag for collecting interesting finds. The organizer will be armed and will carry bear spray, and participants may bring their own. With lower river levels expected in midsummer, getting around should be easier. Previous visits to the area have turned up bone, geodes, several forms of quartz, jasper, chert, and eye-catching pudding stones.

Add color at the face painting station, enjoy sandwiches, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages, and connect with community partners sharing LGBTQIA2S+ resources and information. Step onto the runway for a catwalk competition with prizes, then dance, mingle, and make new connections in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Donations are appreciated, including freshly washed gently used or new clothing in junior through adult sizes, shoes, accessories, skin care, and makeup. Everyone is welcome, and families are invited, though children’s clothing is typically limited since most items are junior and adult sizes. Leggings, T-shirts, sweats, shorts, leotards, tights, ballet shoes, socks, or bare feet all work well. Activities may go outside when the weather allows, so include sneakers and a light jacket. Long hair should be secured away from the face in a ponytail, braids, a bun, or a similar style. Please label all belongings. Pack a jacket, a water bottle, plenty of snacks, ballet slippers if available, sturdy walking shoes or sneakers, and weather essentials such as sunscreen, bug spray, and rain gear. This session can be paired with Fairy Tale Dance Camp Session 2 to create a full day option for children ages 6 and older.

Alaska Art & Soul hosts a bright, color-filled art camp for ages 6 to 18 at the Alaska Art & Soul Studio, located upstairs at The Roundup Steakhouse & Saloon. Each day blends tie-dye with a mix of engaging, hands-on projects so campers can experiment with bold color, unique patterns, and creative techniques in a relaxed, encouraging setting. Campers can look forward to daily tie-dye sessions, canvas painting, rock painting, and guided activities that make it easy to follow along. No prior experience is needed, and there will be plenty of unique pieces to take home. All supplies are included. A snack and snow cones are provided each day, and families of children with food allergies are encouraged to send an appropriate alternative. Clothes that can get messy are recommended. Blackburn is a counselor at West Valley High School who also teaches spin, performs music, acts on stage, and has coached basketball. His creative work has included appearances with the Clarence Pate Project and a role as Walter Lee Younger Jr. in the Fairbanks Drama Association production of Raisin in the Sun. The conversation is offered in person at the BP Design Theater in the Usibelli Engineering building on the UAF campus as well as via livestream, and each presentation is recorded and shared online afterward. Blackburn has been a high school counselor, spin instructor, musician, thespian, and basketball coach during his time in Fairbanks. He currently works as a counselor at West Valley High School and has been involved in the Fairbanks music and performing arts scene for many years, often performing with the Clarence Pate Project. He has also appeared on stage and teaches spin lessons at his home gym.

Craft Night
Gather for a relaxed evening of making at The Folk School’s workshop in Pioneer Park. This free get-together welcomes youth when accompanied by a responsible adult. Bring your own materials, tools, and project, and enjoy creating alongside others who share similar interests. Quiet, portable handwork is the focus, such as knitting, drawing, beading, or carving. There is no formal instruction, and learning happens organically by watching and sharing with fellow participants. To keep conversation comfortable, please avoid projects that require power tools or hammering. A limited selection of shared equipment will be on hand for those interested in whittling or carving, including chopping blocks, benches with vices, shaving horses, bowl benches, saws, and a small number of simple carving tools. During the busy summer season, plan to park in the main front lot or at the boat launch and walk to the workshop near the playground.

Screening in the Active Learning Lab at the Noel Wien Library, this all-ages program features the documentary Flag Day. The film paints a portrait of a classic Midwestern small town that gathers each year to celebrate the principles that connect people with differing perspectives. For 71 summers the town has hosted what it claims is the largest Flag Day parade in the United States, and the documentary explores how that shared tradition can foster a sense of unity.
Noel Wien Public LibraryWildlife and Wildfire Day Camp
Presented by Tanana District 4-H, this day camp invites youth ages 9 and older to explore local wildlife research and wildfire ecology. The program begins at the UAF Large Animal Research Station, with learning focused on muskox, reindeer, and bison. Participants will walk the nearby Wildfire Walk, share a provided lunch, and learn practical tips from the Firewise program. Plan for a 40-minute hike by wearing appropriate footwear and clothing. The fee is $25 for both 4-H members and nonmembers and includes lunch. Please communicate any food allergies in advance. Explore the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute on a free public tour that spotlights cutting edge Arctic research at the largest research institute in Alaska. Over about 90 minutes, the route typically includes the Alaska Earthquake Center, the Wilson Alaska Technical Center, and the Alaska Satellite Facility, plus a stop at the outdoor model rocket to hear about Poker Flat Research Range. Conversations with UAF graduate students invite questions about satellites, earthquakes, nuclear monitoring, rocket launches, and what data the blue antenna records. Registration is not needed. At Solstice Books, award winning author and conservationist Jonathan C. Slaght meets with scientist Ned Rozell to talk about Slaght’s newest book, Tigers Between Empires. The conversation explores a thirty year collaboration between Russian and American researchers to protect Amur tigers, often called Siberian tigers, from extinction. Dr. Slaght will begin with a 30 minute presentation on the conservation work, followed by a Q and A with Rozell. Slaght is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and the author of Owls of the Eastern Ice, which was nominated for a National Book Award in 2020 and won the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award in 2021. He lives in Minneapolis. Copies of both of his books will be available for purchase and signing, along with books by Ned Rozell. This will be Slaght’s only book talk in Alaska.

TVKC presents a Solstice FastCAT event at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Nenana Parking Lot Field. FastCAT is an AKC sport where dogs sprint one at a time down a 100-yard fenced straightaway while chasing a lure. Each run is timed and converted to miles per hour, and participation is open to all AKC-registered dogs, including mixed breeds. There are eight total runs spread across four days, and entrants may choose as many or as few as they like. A Fun Run is available for dogs that have never chased a lure before, and puppies 4 months to under 12 months can enjoy the Bunny Hop. Entry fees are $25 per run. The Fun Run is $5 for club members or $10 for non-members, and the Bunny Hop is $10. Springwind Photography will be on site to capture action shots of the dogs in motion.

The Alaska Joint Electrical Apprenticeship & Training Trust is accepting applications for apprenticeships in the Inside Wireman, Outside Lineman, Telecommunications, and Tree Trimmer trades in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Alaska Works offers free, introductory hands-on training to help prospective applicants build the skills needed to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 at the time of selection, hold a valid Alaska driver’s license, and have a high school diploma or a state-issued GED. A math prerequisite is also required and can be satisfied in one of several ways, including two semesters of high school algebra I or higher with a grade of C or better, a passing postsecondary algebra course, completion of the NJATC tech math course, or a State of Alaska WorkKeys math score of 6 or higher. A complete application includes the online form, a copy of an Alaska driver’s license, official transcripts for high school and any postsecondary education or training including GED records when applicable, a copy of the diploma or GED certificate or high school transcripts that confirm graduation, documentation verifying the math requirement, and the $25 application fee. Qualified candidates will be scheduled for an interview. Applicants who have served in the U.S. military within the past five years, or who can document more than 2,000 hours of electrical construction experience, may be subject to different qualifications. Applications must be completed by the stated deadline.

Coverage from outlets such as the Anchorage Press and KUAC has highlighted her vocals, harmonies, and arrangements, and she has been a finalist in competitions hosted by American Songwriter, Songwriting University, and the International Songwriting Competition. She is currently working on a new album.

Shoppers can browse secondhand clothing from popular brands along with toys, furniture, strollers, car seats, high chairs, swings, and other essential gear, with savings of about 60 to 90 percent off typical retail prices. The sale is open for all shoppers, with an early access option available by presale ticket, followed by free-admission shopping and a final day when most items are offered at half price. Consignors set their own prices and keep 65 percent of their sales, and those who choose to help at the event can increase earnings to 70 to 75 percent while helping is optional.
