Leaves Out Rocks Out 5K

As snow recedes from the tors around the Golden Heart City and green-up nears, the first annual Leaves Out Rocks Out 5K offers a friendly run and walk that celebrates the close of a long, snowy winter while supporting the UAF community. The route starts and finishes in the west Arctic Health parking lot and welcomes participants of all ages and paces. Entry is $25 for adults, $15 for youth ages 13 to 18, and free for children 12 and younger, with all minors required to be accompanied by an adult. After the finish, race participants can enjoy a complimentary barbecue. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome on the course and owners must pick up after their pets, with bags provided; dogs are not allowed near the barbecue after the race. Net proceeds support two assistance funds that help UAF employees and graduate students facing emergencies, the Geophysical Institute Employee Assistance fund (GeoCare) and the Department of Biology and Wildlife and Institute of Arctic Biology’s BioCares fund. These resources can help cover unexpected expenses up to $1,000 for individuals in the Geophysical Institute, the Department of Biology and Wildlife, and the Institute of Arctic Biology. Conscious Step socks with biology and geoscience themes will be available during registration, with any remaining pairs offered on site, and sales benefit the same funds.

NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course

Held at the Hunter Education Indoor Range, this NRA classroom course introduces newcomers to the safe reloading of metallic cartridges. It is designed for first-time reloaders as well as those considering getting started, with a focus on foundational knowledge, practical skills, and a strong safety mindset. There is no live fire or shooting. Firearms and ammunition are not permitted in the classroom, so do not bring them. Instruction covers reloading safety practices, the components of centerfire cartridges, how to read and apply information from reloading manuals, the tools involved, and the step-by-step metallic cartridge reloading process. Participants receive the NRA Guide to Reloading handbook, the Basic Reloading Student Exam, a course completion certificate, an NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and a Basic Firearm Training Program brochure. These public classes are presented in cooperation by AIM-COMM, the Alaska Interior Marksmanship Committee, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range in Fairbanks, Alaska. To foster routine and community, registration is organized by the month, and group sizes are kept small for comfort. If a session fills, a waiting list is available, and those who remain on it will be contacted with an opportunity to register for the next month before it is available to others. Doyon Foundation hosts the first annual Dena Spelling Bee at Effie Kokrine Charter School. Yonder Mountain String Band brings its adventurous, improvisation-forward take on bluegrass to Hering Auditorium, showcasing original songs that have helped shape today’s progressive bluegrass and jamgrass scenes. Marking more than two decades together, the lineup features Adam Aijala on guitar and vocals, Ben Kaufmann on bass and vocals, Dave Johnston on banjo and vocals, and Nick Piccininni on mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and vocals. The group celebrated 25 years with a Grammy nomination for the 2022 album Get Yourself Outside and an induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. Blending bluegrass with rock, alternative, psychedelic, and improvisational influences, the band delivers a high-energy acoustic sound paired with a dynamic light show. Alaskan Paradise

Create a guided painting on a 16 by 20 inch canvas at Silver Gulch Brewing & Bottling Company. All materials are provided, and an instructor will lead you through each step. This family friendly session welcomes all ages, and a moose stencil is included to make the design easier. By signing up, you grant Aurora Artistries permission to capture photos or video for promotional use. If you prefer not to be on camera, let the lead artist know when you arrive and that preference will be respected. If plans change and you cannot attend, you will receive a credit to use at a future paint night. If an instructor needs to cancel due to illness or a family emergency, you will be notified with a new date, and a credit is available if the rescheduled time does not work. Tips for the artist are appreciated but never required.

Alaska Electrical Apprenticeship: Quarterly Application Deadline

The Alaska Joint Electrical Apprenticeship & Training Trust is accepting applications for apprenticeships in the Inside Wireman, Outside Lineman, Telecommunications, and Tree Trimmer trades in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Alaska Works offers free, introductory hands-on training to help prospective applicants build the skills needed to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 at the time of selection, hold a valid Alaska driver’s license, and have a high school diploma or a state-issued GED. A math prerequisite is also required and can be satisfied in one of several ways, including two semesters of high school algebra I or higher with a grade of C or better, a passing postsecondary algebra course, completion of the NJATC tech math course, or a State of Alaska WorkKeys math score of 6 or higher. A complete application includes the online form, a copy of an Alaska driver’s license, official transcripts for high school and any postsecondary education or training including GED records when applicable, a copy of the diploma or GED certificate or high school transcripts that confirm graduation, documentation verifying the math requirement, and the $25 application fee. Qualified candidates will be scheduled for an interview. Applicants who have served in the U.S. military within the past five years, or who can document more than 2,000 hours of electrical construction experience, may be subject to different qualifications. Applications must be completed by the stated deadline.

This edition features Ashtyn Barbaree, an indie folk singer-songwriter from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas whose sound blends folk, alt-country and Americana. Her accolades include 2025 Americana Artist of the Year from the Arkansas Country Music Awards, Best Americana Artist and Best Country/Folk Artist in North Arkansas at the Arkansas Music Awards, and an official nomination for 2026 Americana Artist of the Year with the ACMA. Since 2021 she has represented Arkansas State Tourism as a Music Ambassador and is part of the Arkansas Arts Council Arts on Tour roster. Attendees may bring chairs, food and beverages and enjoy live music alongside the reindeer. The series continues throughout the summer, offering chances to see the calves grow.

9th Annual Alaska Yoga Festival - Fairbanks

Now in its ninth year, the Alaska Yoga Festival brings a full weekend of movement and mindfulness to Griffin Park in downtown Fairbanks. The celebration opens with a day of specialty workshops offered at locations around town, then shifts into the main event, a yoga marathon with classes scheduled every hour throughout the day. Attendees can enjoy hour long yoga and wellness sessions led by instructors from across Alaska and beyond, with a focus on inspiration, relaxation, and community. The nonprofit partner is the Resource Center for Parents and Children. Festival imagery includes a mandala created by Emma Benjamin.

Music With Reindeer: Steve Brown & Robin Feinman

The Music with Reindeer summer series continues with a memorable evening in the glow of the midnight sun, pairing live local music with the resident reindeer. Fairbanks musicians and friends Steve Brown and Robin Feinman bring a shared love of storytelling through song. Brown, a singer-songwriter, leads Steve Brown and the Bailers and is known across Interior Alaska for Americana and roots rock. Feinman sings and plays multiple instruments, adding harmony and texture to the duo’s sound. Together they deliver an intimate acoustic mix of original pieces and carefully chosen covers, well suited to a summer night among the spruce trees at Running Reindeer Ranch. Attendees may bring chairs, food, and beverages to enjoy the music alongside the herd, and the series carries on through the season as the calves grow.
