    The Impressionist Approach in Watercolor

    Forstall Art Center, 1194 20th St N, Birmingham · verified Oct 9
    See details

Explore a three day watercolor workshop with Fábio Cembranelli that focuses on simplifying complex scenes and capturing the charm of doorways wrapped in greenery, open fields, and blooming florals. Through small, vibrant strokes placed side by side, participants learn to mix color optically for luminous passages of light and movement in a loose, impressionistic spirit. Guided demonstrations and hands on practice encourage quick, confident decision making so the medium can do what it does best and glow. All levels are welcome. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. The fee is $500 and includes lunch on Saturday. Supplies are required. Instruction covers how to create natural greens by balancing warm and cool mixtures, how to lay in a wash and leave it undisturbed, and how to read paper dampness so thicker paint can settle into wet areas for soft, atmospheric effects. Participants build depth by understanding the relationship of background, middle ground, and foreground, learn to push the horizon back with cool pale blues and soft edges, and practice dry brush for crisp texture and contrast. Additional focus areas include rendering doorways with flowers and foliage through light and shadow, preserving the white of the paper for cotton and flower fields, keeping mixtures clean to avoid muddiness, and using negative painting and lifting to shape luminous white flowers and highlights. Demonstrations feature white flowers, expressive landscape studies, flower and cotton fields, and a doorway set within foliage and blooms, along with multiple sketches and small studies that reinforce key concepts. Fábio Cembranelli is a Brazilian artist who began painting while studying architecture at university. His work has appeared in exhibitions and collections around the world, and he is known internationally for radiant floral watercolors. He favors transparent watercolor for its speed and fluid blending, often defining main shapes and allowing the unpredictable to shape the rest, with timing playing a central role. His approach leans toward realism while embracing diffused forms and the interplay of loose and sharp edges, light, and shadow. He teaches in his studio, in galleries and art societies, and offers workshops both in person and online across Brazil and abroad. He is also a regular contributor to art magazines in South America, the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, France, Japan, and Australia.

    Garrison Starr

    5503 1st Ave N, Birmingham · verified Oct 11
    See details

Garrison Starr teams up with Kristy Lee for an intimate evening of songs and stories. Starr, a singer, songwriter, and Grammy-nominated producer, arrives with a forthcoming full-length, Garrison Starr and The Gospel Truth, a collection she describes as swampy, gospel-rooted hymns that continue the healing arc begun on Girl I Used To Be toward self-acceptance and forgiveness. Her work has drawn praise for a commanding voice and emotionally rich, melodic writing, with song placements on series such as Monarch, Bull, and Walker: Independence. She has collaborated in the studio and on the road with Steve Earle, Jason Isbell, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, Patty Griffin, Mindy Smith, Glen Phillips, and Indigo Girls, earning respect from peers for the honesty at the heart of her music. Kristy Lee brings a calm-to-volcanic dynamic, shifting from a hush to full-throttle power. Raised on Gulf Coast grit and gospel influences, she leans into connection and intensity, turning festival stages and listening rooms alike into deeply felt experiences. The performance centers on raw, soulful delivery and songs that aim straight for the truth. This is a seated performance, and capacity is limited.

    Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema, 1821 2nd Ave N, Birmingham · verified Oct 11
    See details

Sidewalk’s Book + Film Club brings together readers and film fans for a monthly screening paired with conversation. Registration is available at two levels, with a $35 option that includes the featured book, the film screening, and the discussion, or a $15 option for access to the screening and the post film discussion. This session highlights Scream with Me: Horror Films and the Rise of American Feminism (1968-1980) by Eleanor Johnson, which explores how influential works like Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, and The Shining address reproductive control, domestic violence, and patriarchal oppression. Johnson presents horror cinema as both a celebration of the genre and a meaningful lens for understanding cultural dialogues about gender and power, suggesting the screen can provide both illumination and an outlet for a collective scream. The film selection is Rosemary’s Baby (1968), directed by Roman Polanski. A couple hoping to start a family moves into a grand, timeworn apartment building on Central Park West, where the eccentric older neighbors become an unsettling presence. Participants may choose to have the book mailed or pick it up from the Box Office during regular operating hours, and an email will be sent when the book is ready for pickup.

Select Birmingham performances feature live music performed by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Alabama Ballet is one of just nine companies in the world licensed by the Balanchine Trust to present this production, offering a festive experience for audiences of all ages.

Adult Book Club: The Secret Christmas Library by Jenny Colgan

Trussville Public Library, 201 Parkway Dr, Trussville
    See details

An evening book club for adults offers conversation focused on reading and community. This session spotlights The Secret Christmas Library by Jenny Colgan, a wintry tale about Mirren Sutherland, an antiquarian book hunter whose search leads to a Highland castle and a family legend about a rare volume that could save an ancestral estate. Hired by Jamie McKinnon to find the hidden treasure, Mirren encounters her rival, Theo Palliser, on the way north. When heavy snow strands them at the castle, they turn to the late laird’s love of treasure hunts and follow a trail of clues through the house, forming and breaking alliances as they race to uncover long kept secrets. The club meets at the library in the evening and provides a welcoming space for adults to share thoughts on this title and other recent reads. For help obtaining the book or with questions, the Adult Department is available at 205-655-2022 or tr.adult@jclc.org.
