John Emerald Distilling Company hosts a stop on the Appalachian Smoke Fall Tour featuring Mountain Grass Unit, a Birmingham-raised modern bluegrass and roots band known for high-energy shows, adventurous playing, and the tight connection that comes from years together. Their stage sound blends swift instrumental exchanges, improvisation with a jamgrass charge, and song-centered roots music. The group is built around the longstanding partnership of mandolinist and vocalist DruryAnderson, guitarist Luke Black, and bassist Sam Wilson, with fiddler Josiah Nelson completing the lineup. Beat Bama Food Drive hosts its annual 5K and Fun Run, bringing the community together to address food insecurity across the state. Donations support the Food Bank of East Alabama, with each dollar helping provide seven meals for neighbors in need. Instruction covers lab layout and clean technique, substrate preparation and inoculation, fruiting chamber and greenhouse setup, and an introduction to cloning and culture work, all tied to day to day production. This workshop is designed for growers with some experience who want more reliable results at home or who are working toward commercial practice. If you have started cultures, run a few blocks, or tried fruiting and want the fundamentals to click, the training focuses on making those pieces fit together. Each ticket includes a ready to fruit block and two commercial cultures to take home, hands on time in the lab and around the facility, and lunch.
