Rueda in the Park marks its 22nd year with a community potluck and dance gathering that celebrates the Cuban social dance of casino and rueda de casino. For more than two decades, dancers have come together outdoors to learn, practice, and share this vibrant style that has spread around the world. Expect plenty of dancing, food, music, and time with casineros, salseros, timberos, and friends from across the community. A refresher class led by Tania will revisit favorite moves from past sessions, and the annual tradition returns where women lead and men follow in a special rueda. This is a potluck, so please bring a cooked dish or drinks to share, aiming for enough for 15 to 20 people. Alcohol is not permitted in Santa Monica. A sign up list helps coordinate items to avoid duplicates, and plates, utensils, napkins, and cups are especially helpful, with about 100 of each suggested if selecting one of those. Main and side dishes such as potatoes, frijoles negros, rice, yucca, salads, and meats like pork, chicken, beef, or fish are welcome, along with beverages like water, juice, soda, or lemonade. LA Havoc focuses on early competitive development with local bouts in Southern California. LA Revolt provides an intermediate track, competing locally and traveling within the Western region for bouts and tournaments. The Travel Team is the advanced JRDA charter squad, competing in sanctioned games in both female and open divisions locally and regionally. Participants should bring numbered black and white scrimmage shirts, full protective gear including skates, helmet, knee, elbow and wrist protection, and a mouth guard. Water, a yoga mat, a towel, sneakers, and a snack are also recommended. The try-outs are free and carry no obligation, and participation is open to skaters from inside or outside the league. Entry is limited to skaters and registered volunteers.
